Last night something happened with our power. I came home to find our block with no power and our local energy company working on something down the street. Talking to some of the neighbors it sounds like there were several power surges before the power went completely out. 2 of my neighbors said their TVs "blew up" when the surges were happening.
The next morning when power was restored I checked out my TV. The surge protector was dead. It sacrificed itself to safe everything plugged into it which is exactly what I bought it to do. All my electronics worked perfectly fine once I removed the surge protector and plugged them into the wall. I couldn't ask for anything more from this product. It cost me about $15 (can't remember exact price I paid) and saved me $2K+.
I didn't see a place to access and replace a fuse inside the surge protector so I can't tell you if the whole thing was completely fried or if it just blew a fuse. I'm sure I could pop open the housing and take a look but I'm so happy with its performance I'm not even going to bother trying to replace. I will gladly purchase another and probably many more in the future.
If you're considering buying this product I can tell you without a doubt IT WORKS.
Value: At $8.69, this was well-priced.
Functionality: Love how compact this little surge protector is, gets the job done with a low profile.
Key Features: Super sturdy if you use the included screw. Small but powerful.
Cons: Losing the center screw is annoying but it can easily be replaced with a generic long screw. Also some outlet covers don't have a center screw, so you'll miss out on that crucial support... but it's still works well without it. Also given the size of this thing, you may not be able to actually plug in 6 different cords — I'm currently comfortably using it with 4 connections.
This is a straight-forward surge protector. It isn't fancy, but it doesn't need to be—it has a simple form, it does its job, and it seems to do it well. We've been using Belkin surge protectors for years and have never had a problem, even in places where the power flickered often due to electrical demands in the area (high heat).
This protector is a wall-unit and it fit into the wall socket easily and stays in place well. We haven't needed to use anything other than a few of the outlets, but we have had no problems with it. As you might guess from the picture, this isn't a great unit to use if you have six huge rectangle box plugs to plug in. They would not all fit. You'd need something else like a squid surge protector. However, for standard-sized plugs, this is a great unit.
We haven't had any issues using ours. I recommend this surge protector to others.
Installation:
I wouldn't say it is super easy - since it isn't just plug and play - but it comes close. You basically just need a screwdriver to take the outlet cover off your current outlet and then plug this 6 outlet wall-mount surge protector onto it. You then use said screwdriver to hold the Belkin unit onto the outlet. It's that simple - and honestly you could probably forgo this entire procedure and just install it on top of an existing outlet (just remove the screw from the Belkin unit) - but since we have 3 toddlers - this wasn't an option for us.
Performance:
So far it has performed great. We have an external display, a charger, and 2 lamps plugged into it and it works fine. I can't - and don't plan on - reviewing the surge protection part of the device but it makes me feel a little better that my expensive display - and computers if they happen to be plugged in - are protected in the case of a surge.
Pros:
1. It's cheap - $8.50 for 4 additional outlets along with surge protection is a pretty good deal.
2. Easy installation
3. No cords
Cons:
1. It's not pretty - and if you remove the cover from your existing outlet there will be a gap between the Belkin unit and your wall. I suggest you place this somewhere where most people won't see it - I myself keep it behind our computer desk.
2. It attaches itself very firmly to your wall outlet - but if the wall outlet isn't attached very firmly this could be an issue. Ours seems to wobble a little to the left and right when plugging and unplugging cords into the unit - but since we don't do this often it's just a minor inconvenience.
3. It has lights that don't turn off. I'm sure some people will like this because it will show that the unit is working (hopefully) - but if I wanted lights coming off outlet I would have bought a lamp (and I did). Again, if this is an issue just hide it behind something.
4. It bulges out from the wall - which is to be expected - but if you plan to install it behind something you will need to plan on moving that item out from the wall more than what you would have to do with a regular outlet. Since we mounted this behind our computer desk we ended up just taking the panel off the back part of our desk and having the outlet protrude into the desk - because we didn't not want the desk to have to sit several inches away from the wall just because of this outlet.
Conclusion:
This is honestly a great product for the price - especially if the surge protector abilities live up to their claims. There are some minor annoyances but I would think with any product like this you are going to have some issues with size and looks. If anyone is looking for a way to get more outlets out of your existing outlets - and you don't want to deal with additional cords - I highly recommend this product.
