NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER! OVER 5 MILLION COPIES SOLD!

Is there credible evidence that Jesus of Nazareth really is the Son of God? Former atheist and Chicago Tribune journalist Lee Strobel takes an investigative look at the evidence from the fields of science, philosophy, and history.

In this revised and updated bestseller, The Case for Christ, Lee Strobel cross-examines a dozen experts with doctorates from schools such as Cambridge, Princeton, and Brandeis, asking hard-hitting questions--and building a captivating case for Christ's divinity.

Strobel asks challenging questions like:

  • How reliable is the New Testament?
  • Does evidence for Jesus exist outside the Bible?
  • Is Jesus who he said he was?
  • Is there any reason to believe the resurrection was an actual event?

Winner of the Gold Medallion Book Award and twice nominated for the Christian Book of the Year Award, Strobel's tough, point-blank questions read like a captivating, fast-paced novel. But it's not fiction. It's a riveting quest for the truth about history's most compelling figure.

This edition includes scores of revisions and additions, including updated material on archaeological and manuscript discoveries, fresh recommendations for further study, and an interview with the author that tells dramatic stories about the book's impact, provides behind-the-scenes information, and responds to critiques of the book by skeptics.

Also available: The Case for Christ Spanish edition, kids' edition, and student edition. Plus, be sure to check out Lee Strobel's entire collection of Case for books:

  • The Case for a Creator explores the scientific evidence for God
  • The Case for Grace uncovers the "how" and "why" behind God's amazing grace
  • The Case for Faith responds to eight major objections about Christianity
  • . . . and more!

My Journey from Skeptic to Believer

I considered myself an atheist. To me, there was far too much evidence that God was merely a product of wishful thinking, of ancient mythology, of primitive superstition.

My wife Leslie stunned me in the autumn of 1979 by announcing that she had become a Christian, so I launched an all-out investigation into the facts surrounding the case for Christianity.

Setting aside my self-interest and prejudices as best I could, I read books, interviewed experts, asked questions, analyzed history, explored archaeology, studied ancient literature, and for the first time in my life picked apart the Bible verse by verse.

I plunged into the case with more vigor than with any story I had ever pursued. I applied the training I had received at Yale Law School as well as my experience as legal affairs editor of the Chicago Tribune. And over time the evidence of the world—of history, of science, of philosophy, of psychology—began to point toward the unthinkable.

A Unique Perspective on The Foundations of Christianity

A Unique Perspective on The Foundations of Christianity
Most books about religion are written by scholars and those who want to share their faith. Or, conversely, are non-believers. “The Case for Christ” is different. Author Lee Strobel is a journalist who used his investigative skills to look into the teachings of Jesus to measure their validity. Strobel is also a former atheist who talked to 14 experts and scholars who are experts in history, psychology, medicine, archaeology, and theology. He sought to examine the scientific and historical evidence of the Christian faith. As a result of his research, Strobel now believes that Jesus was real, the Gospels are accurate, and his crucifixion happened.Among the highlights:• We can trust the GospelsCraig Blomberg, a scholar of the New Testament, confirms that the gospels are based on eyewitness accounts.• The stories of Jesus’ life have been told consistently.Metzger, a Princeton professor specializing in the textual history of the New Testament, says the documents on which the New Testament is based date to an extremely early period in the Church and are authentic.• Contradictions in the BibleThe author says that if the gospels had been identical to each other, one could argue that the writers coordinated their stories to make them look more valid.• Did Jesus’ Disciples Embellish Their Stories?“Besides, these disciples had nothing to gain except criticism, ostracism, and martyrdom. They certainly had nothing to win financially. If anything, this would have provided pressure to keep quiet, to deny Jesus, to downplay him, even to forget they ever met him—yet because of their integrity, they proclaimed what they saw, even when it meant suffering and death.”• Does Archaeology Confirm or Contradict Jesus’ Biographies?Australian archaeologist Clifford Wilson wrote, “Those who know the facts now recognize that the New Testament must be accepted as a remarkably accurate sourcebook.”• Was Jesus Convinced That He Was the Son of God?The author of the book “Reasonable Faith” William Lane Craig, said, “Did Jesus believe he was the Son of God, the anointed one of God? The answer is yes. Did he see himself as the Son of Man? The answer is yes. Did he see himself as the final Messiah? Yes, that’s the way he viewed himself. Did he believe that anybody less than God could save the world? No, I don’t believe he did. “And here’s where the paradox gets as quizzical as it can possibly get: the way God was going to save the world was by his Son dying. The most human of all human acts—to die. “Now, God, in his divine nature, doesn’t die. So, how was God going to get this done? How was God going to be the Savior of the human race? He had to come as a human being to accomplish that task. And Jesus believed he was the one to do it• Was Jesus’ Death a Sham and His Resurrection a Hoax?By analyzing the medical and historical data, Dr. Alexander Metherell concluded Jesus could not have survived the gruesome rigors of crucifixion, much less the gaping wound that pierced his lung and heart. The idea that he somehow swooned on the cross and pretended to be dead lacks any evidential basis. Roman executioners were grimly efficient, knowing that they themselves would face death if any of their victims were to come down from the cross alive. Even if Jesus had somehow lived through the torture, his ghastly condition could never have inspired a worldwide movement based on the premise that he had gloriously triumphed over the grave.Calling on his journalistic training, author Strobel concludes, “As someone educated in journalism and law, I was trained to respond to the facts, wherever they lead. For me, the data demonstrated convincingly that Jesus is the Son of God who died as my substitute to pay the penalty I deserved for the wrongdoing I had committed.”This a solid five-star book that I highly recommend to those who have ever thought about religion and their faith.

I am a Christian, but I wanted to read this book about an atheist who, during his investigation to prove that Christ was some fairy tale, made an about face and now is a Christian himself. Love the book, and I believe most people will enjoy the pros and cons that the author tackled about the Christian faith. I didn't need convincing for why I believe, but Strobel does an excellent job of presenting the facts for the any reader to decide for himself.

First of all, I have to say that I am a Catholic although unfortunately, not a good one.

Many years ago, I had watched the movie based on this book and it was extremely interesting but I did not go further. However, I had the opportunity to watch it again recently, and immediately afterwards I bought the book. It is captivating, not only because of the careful writing and research but also because of what I was feeling when reading it. It has helped me bolster my faith and has equipped me with very good arguments to defend it and with very good reasons to try to become a better Catholic.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone genuinely interested in getting a fair idea of why us Catholics believe what we believe.

Finally, although the research behind the book is extremely deep, I would have liked a chapter regarding the Turin Shroud. In fact, I was a surprised that this topic was not even mentioned since from my point of view, that relic would have nicely supported the arguments of the book.

There is a movie with the same title and this book is very well done. Spelling out the Theologians and experts that were talked to in order to determine the existence of Jesus and how the information brings us to a conclusion . If your interested in Jesus and learning how we conclude that he existed and died for our sins then this is a good book for you.
I enjoyed it thourougly and it has inspired me to seek out Jesus and to begin my journey and study of the Bible

Strobel, an investigative journalist, starts as a skeptic himself and takes the reader along his journey, which in the end convinces not only him but the reader of the overwhelming evidence of the biblical story of Jesus.

I read this book because a good friend of mine asked me to. He has an incredibly strong faith and I respect that greatly about him. But I had to chuckle when I bought this on Amazon they also recommended I buy “A Case Against A Case for Christ” It made me think of the Stephen Wright joke about turning on a humidifier and a dehumidifier in the same room and letting them fight it out.

I passed on the second book and focused my attention on A Case for Christ. And I have to say I was impressed. This book is incredibly well researched but doesn’t get bogged down in minutiae. Strobel’s writing is easy to read and digest.

I’ve always said the best case for Jesus’ resurrection is that none of his disciples changed their story even as many of them met horrifying ends. You threaten to burn me at the stake and I’m pretty much denouncing anything you want me to denounce. But there are no stories in our known history, either in the Bible or otherwise, where a direct disciple changed his testimony to spare himself. And for anyone who wants to refute Jesus’ status as deity, that’s a high hurdle to clear. Strobel of course makes many other arguments for Christ, but this is, and always will be, the strongest.

In the end, one line in this book stood out to me: “As long as the existence of God is even possible, it’s possible that he acted in history by raising Jesus from the dead.”

Is the existence of God possible? Of course it is. Is it likely? Is it something I believe in? No. I don’t. And believe me, I have spent more time pondering this question than any other in my life. But for me, there’s just nothing there but man’s burning desire that this can’t be all there is. That our short time on earth can’t be all we have. But for me, it is. And that fact actually brings me joy because it forces me to seize the day and make the most of my life, rather than hoping for some eternal reward. Eternity seems like a long time anyway, especially when I struggle sometimes to get to the end of the week.

Anyway, if you are Christian and want to solidify your faith, I highly recommend this book. It will not only help you believe even more fervently but it’ll give you fodder for your next argument with a skeptic like me.

I ordered 3 copies of this book, new, from Amazon Marketplace on Thursday, 2-29-2024, and got it via US POSTAL MAIL on Wednesday, 3-6-2024, which, at 6 days, was fast. Their price was reasonable, and my books are indeed new. Good job, Amazon Marketplace, at fast shipping of "THE CASE FOR Christ," by Attorney Lee Stroble, the legendary CHICAGO TRIBUNE Legal Journalist. This is a highly regarded book regarding whether Canon Bible Scripture is accurate, as claimed, and the author is genuine, insofar as it's well-documented that he was an atheist (no motives to support God) and very smart (Google him).

Both the reputation and my cursory review confirm this is a classic, not unlike "Evidence That Demands a Verdict," by Josh McDowell and his son, Dr. Sean McDowell, PhD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Een gedegen onderzoek door een Atheïst van de Bijbel
Reviewed in the Netherlands on June 12, 2021
