- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2012In my opinion this book by noted Yorkshire Terrier breeder and elegant lady, Ms Ann Serrane, has been the very best guide to breeding I have ever seen or read. It is very comprehensive and gives the good, as well as, the bad of breeding dogs, the great rewards and the biggest problems and what to expect. She interviewed many top breeders from all over, including the infamous Leon Shiver of Shandown Pointer fame. Leon was one of the most knowledgeable breeders all around in my opionion and I was blessed to be able to learn so much from him and his wife Shan, both gone now, but so much knowledge. She included the best methods to use in whelping pups and the biggest problems and helped with advice to better overcome the problems. I believe every breeder of dogs, especially very well bred dogs, should have this book in their library as well as Rachael Page Elliott's DVDs and books on structure, "DOGSTEPS" and Pagey's other related books and DVDs. I rate this book as one of the highest on my list of ones to read and to have for beeders.
Thank you for having it available for me to repurchase it after so many years.
Bless you,
Ree

- Reviewed in the United States on November 5, 2015This book is great! Whether you already have experience or not, this is the perfect book for breeders. I covers everything you need to know to breed a successful litter and create a successful program. Even the more technical and information-dense sections are written in a conversational language that makes complicated subjects like genetics easy to grasp. There are plenty of illustrations to help too. Rather than relying solely on one person's opinion (like some other breeding books I've read) or pasting in a bunch of technical jargon Ann Seranne includes her own knowledge and plenty of examples of how other successful breeders run their programs. Full of knowledge and a great resource. This is the kind of book you will want to read over and over and you will gain something more every time!

- Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2015I lost this book in a move to a new home 8years ago. Originally I bought it when I bred Shih Tzu for 20 years, then stopped for 9 yrs. When I wanted to take up the hobby again, I was upset that I could not find this book. I bought it because it has any information you need about heredity, the whelping process and other tips. I am happy that this book will be on hand during the next whelping time!

Images in this review - Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2011The particular book I purhcased was rated in good condition, and I would agree. There was an inch section on the outside binding that looked like someone's dog tasted it, but the inside was in perfect condition and looked like new. The book is from the original printing period before they updated the cover but for $5, it's the same excellent resource for anyone interested in breeding and raising dogs to have. Especially when other copies were $35 and up for the same book. I don't think they changed any of the information in the second printing, just the cover.
It is an excellent resource, and while I'm glad I found one for such a great price, it's well worth the investment if you pay more. The genetics section is very informative and has some great specific examples to aid understanding. The way she shows sample pedigrees as she explains things such as line-breeding are also helpful, though the way they are printed on the page was a bit confusing to understand at first.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2016Great book With a wealth of info. This is one I keep for regular reading before and after puppy delivery. You won't be disappointed in the detailed information it provides. I am a dog groomer that owner handles and a novice show breeder. I recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2013I've had many whelping guides over the years but this one remains my favorite. As an AKC breeder of merit and new exhibitor mentor, this is the book I just bought for my friends who are planning their first champion-bred litter.
