Bright Moon Paperback – June 30, 2023
Purchase options and add-ons
Bright Moon is a tale of the love between a grandmother and her granddaughter. As a young girl, Ming is captivated by Grandmother's stories about the moon. She becomes so enamored with the moon, she wants it for her very own. Grandmother sees Ming's awakening curiosity about the moon as an opportunity to instill values and impart wisdom. When Ming becomes a young woman, Grandmother tells her the Moon Parable, a tale originally told by the Buddha. Illuminating the Buddha's parable,
Grandmother uses the metaphor of the moon to teach Ming about her Buddha-nature and shine the light within her. Ming eventually inherits Grandmother's legacy of storytelling and passes on the wisdom of Grandmother's stories to her own grandchildren.
A tender tale about wisdom, family, and the power of stories, Bright Moon shines with a warm light.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2024We all wish we had a tender grandmother like the character Brian Conroy depicts in Bright Moon, a gentle tale about grandmothers and granddaughters. The author points out (in the acknowledgment section called “Three Bows”) the need for more Buddhist stories with females as central characters, and Conroy delivers on that promise with one scant reference to “the old man in the moon” and, of course, Buddha himself. Otherwise, his colorfully rendered parable gives us females from start to finish, including a poignant arc wherein the lovely young granddaughter inevitably matures into a wise grandmother herself. On the surface, Bright Moon is about the love between these two main characters, but there are other lessons deep at the soul level, for at its core, the tale is about Buddha-nature. And please forgive me if I cannot resist inserting my favorite Buddha-nature quip: the seeker asks the sage, “Does a dog have Buddha nature?” The sage replies, “Does Buddha have dog-nature?” True dog lovers know exactly what I’m talking about—and it IS relevant, but you will need to buy this delightful book to find out why. Bright Moon is illustrated in clean but muted colors by Catrina Milner. Her style adroitly captures the loving-kindness of the author’s text, graceful and amusing, light in touch, with an appropriate emotional kick. One of my favorite parts of this book is the Author’s Afterword, in which he draws our adult attention to sources, meanings, and interpretations we might not recognize at first glance. I’ve yet to decide whether this is a children’s book, and if so, at what age does it begin to work? Or is this a grown-up story disguised as a kid's book? This is quibbling. Bright Moon is a worthy addition to contemporary Buddhist scripture.
