LOTUS: A Free Grace Response to TULIP Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 28 ratings

Endorsed by Dr Charlie Bing, Dr Fred Chay, Dr Steven Cook, and Jeremy Mikkelsen.

If the resurrection is true, and the holy Scriptures are God's special revelation to mankind, then we would do well to understand what the Creator of the cosmos has to say to the best of our ability. And one of the greatest things we must understand is how to receive eternal life.

Unfortunately, there are many people who have made the Gospel message complicated, full of works and self-righteousness, and only available to a select group of people who God supposedly "elected" before life began. This teaching is commonly understood by the Calvinist acronym "TULIP."

While much has been written against the Calvinist TULIP framework, "LOTUS: A Free Grace Response to TULIP" is Daniel's attempt to articulate a Free Grace acronym that counters TULIP in a sequential, point-by-point order. This brings Soteriology back to a simple faith-alone message, for whosoever believeth, "according to the Scriptures."

In a collaborated effort to advance this Biblical teaching, noted pastors, and theologians have contributed chapters in this book. Finally, we don't have to settle for the Arminian DAISY or the Calvinist TULIP, there is a system and acronym that fits what most people truly believe. And that acronym is LOTUS.

Finally, something for all of us who neither Calvinists or Arminians!
So many Christians are more interested in being "Biblicists" than being identified with a philosophical system such as Calvinism or Arminianism which are often at odds with the plain, literal reading of Scripture. Weierbach and the contributors to this book do a very good job of showing the flaws in the tenets of the Calvinist system which are represented by the TULIP acronym, and comparing those claims against the claims found in the Bible. By putting TULIP and LOTUS side by side, it is easy to see that this new LOTUS acronym better reflects the truths found in Scripture. I also like the Scripture index section at the back of the book. I intend to use it as a reference source when I have a question about a certain passage or verse. Thank you, Daniel Weierbach, for the time and effort you expended to help so many of us have a way to explain to others what the Bible says about salvation and the true character of God.

This book does a fantastic job of contrasting the philosophical framework of TULIP with what is plainly written in scripture. Unlike many books about differing theologies, Daniel Weierbach does not lean on belittling and insulting those he disagrees with. He graciously allows for the proponents of that view to speak for themselves to explain their views, and then analyzes what they have said and breaks down the implication of those views and contrasts them to scripture.

One thing that I learned in this book were that the points of TULIP, while they sound reasonable on the surface, are really more in-depth and detailed than they let on. For example: Total Depravity. It doesn’t take a genius to see that mankind is naturally sinful and wicked (totally depraved). I totally accept this fact and have always thought that was what was meant by Calvinists when they said they believed that. Rather than telling the reader what they really mean, Weierbach allows the proponents of that view to explain that concept in their own words by using quotes from their own writings. I found out that Total Depravity goes beyond simply thinking that we are all naturally sinful and depraved, it is the strong belief that humans have absolutely no ability to do anything good at all and that because of this inability to do or think anything good, we are therefore unable to seek God or be interested in God. I see this conflicting with the gospel, which is presented to us to either believe or reject. Christ first loved us and wants us to seek Him, believe in Him, and to follow Him.

Another big thing I learned in this book was just how much TULIP is rooted in philosophy rather than in scripture. In order to adhere to their beliefs, they must rely more on a philosophical framework than on actual scripture, and what scripture they do use as supposed proof texts must be read through the lenses of that philosophical framework rather understood in the plain context of the Word of God.
I am hesitant in saying this, but having read this and having read the quotes used by the proponents of TULIP, I am inclined to say that the god that they claim to believe in is vastly different than the God seen in scripture and through Christ. When the God of the Bible is seen through the lenses and framework of their philosophy, He is reduced to a malevolent, cruel, unloving, lying, manipulative, confusing, and inconsistent god. That might very well be why many followers of that philosophy that I have met reflect those very attributes. A better understanding of their philosophy regarding election also allows me to understand why many of the followers of TULIP that I have met over the past decade have an air of superiority and usually come across as condescending to others.

The only critique I will offer is that I would have made the subtitle be “A Biblical response to TULIP”. Overall, this was a fantastic book and was very enlightening and helpful.

Weierbach does a great job of paralleling the points of Calvinism (TULIP) against a new and creative alternative Free Grace acronym (LOTUS). The comparison style makes it easy to weigh the merits of each point, but what's most impressive is that every chapter contains something that will make you stop and think.

Although Weierbach admits the chapter comparing Irresistible Grace and what he termed Unlimited Grace was the most challenging, I think that was one of the most compelling chapters. He does an excellent job of examining the various proof texts and explains the amazing grace of God in a way that is refreshing.

The entire book is creative and thought provoking and it includes appendices in further support of LOTUS by numerous other Free Grace authors.

Liable depravity, Occupational election, Total atonement, Unlimited grace, Security of the saints. I'm actually surprised LOTUS wasn't developed before now. Each point is Biblically presented, and clearly preferable to the corresponding five points of TULIP.

I'm not well read in Calvinist theology but I really liked the concept of using another 5 letter flower to contrast it with. Indeed LOTUS and TULIP are mirror opposites. The book covers the proof texts really well and shows the bible is easier to understand than you may think. Praise God he gives free grace

Weierbach brings a trailblazing work not just to the Free Grace community, but Christian literature as a whole. With a brand new LOTUS acronym that combats Calvinism’s TULIP letter by letter, Weierbach has left the Christian world with a great and easy to remember summary of Free Grace Theology that pushes back against TULIP and avoids other doctrines that can be just as dangerous.

Bringing along a band of other respected theologians, Weierbach delivers an academic yet accessible-to-all product that goes over TULIP respectfully with steel-man representation with a thoughtful and theologically filled explanation of the new LOTUS acronym!

A must read for everybody trying to enter into the conversation between Calvinism and Free Grace Theology.

An absolutely fantastic alternative to the unbiblical, unhelpful, untrue TULIP acronym used by false teachers today.
