A father and daughter living in the remote Appalachian mountains must reckon with the ghosts of their past in Kimi Cunningham Grant's These Silent Woods, a mesmerizing novel of suspense.

No electricity, no family, no connection to the outside world.

For eight years, Cooper and his young daughter, Finch, have lived in isolation in a remote cabin in the northern Appalachian woods. And that's exactly the way Cooper wants it, because he's got a lot to hide. Finch has been raised on the books filling the cabin’s shelves and the beautiful but brutal code of life in the wilderness. But she’s starting to push back against the sheltered life Cooper has created for her―and he’s still haunted by the painful truth of what it took to get them there.

The only people who know they exist are a mysterious local hermit named Scotland, and Cooper's old friend, Jake, who visits each winter to bring them food and supplies. But this year, Jake doesn't show up, setting off an irreversible chain of events that reveals just how precarious their situation really is. Suddenly, the boundaries of their safe haven have blurred―and when a stranger wanders into their woods, Finch’s growing obsession with her could put them all in danger. After a shocking disappearance threatens to upend the only life Finch has ever known, Cooper is forced to decide whether to keep hiding―or finally face the sins of his past.

Vividly atmospheric and masterfully tense,
These Silent Woods is a poignant story of survival, sacrifice, and how far a father will go when faced with losing it all.

I wouldn't necessarily call it a thriller but I loved it. I finished it in 3 days (would have been 1 day, but kids haha) first book I’ve read in years and it was so well written. The ending had me in tears.

This is now added to one of my most FAVORITE books - and authors! what a find. Saw it summarized in one of my subscription magazines, looked it up on my Kindle, Sampled it, could not hit the BUY button fast enough. This is an extremely poignant story about a man who faces a heart wrenching challenge, does what he has to do to get his infant daughter back and move on into seclusion in a remote part of the country. You totally understand why he does what he does, you actually learn details along the way tho, not right away. I liked that, that the author provides the reader with background at appropriate times in the novel. You will love every character in this book - Cooper, his daughter Finch, Marie, Scotland - oh yes, Scotland.

And Cooper's descriptions of the love of his life: Finch's mother (Cindy) are beautiful. i.e. "The thing about Cindy was when you were with her, there was no one else, just you. That's how you felt, like the whole world and everyone in it just slipped out of sight."

The interactions between Cooper & Finch are exquisite. The author's writing blows me away - her descriptions of interactions/nature. She makes you FEEL what she is describing. Like "That's what Scotland does each time, just shows up, appears out of nowhere, like a ghost, like fog." 11 year old finch is wise beyond her years, her 'understanding' of things/people is unbelievable.

The back references by Cooper to his time spent in wars, his relationship with his best friend Jake, all just gut you.

You will love the kitten Scotland gives to Finch.....which she names Walt Whitman (Finch is a voracious reader).

The ending will truly blow you away....gut you....knock your socks off.....make you fall asleep thinking of it all....

I could spend a lot of time/space here raving about the writing of this fabulous novel, about the tenderness.....quoting MANY passages I highlighted...but have to just trust that you will take my word for it that this is NOT a novel to be missed. I've already downloaded one of her other novels to gobble up. It won't be nearly long enough, just like this one wasn't.....but it's 'enough' to have entered my soul and will always remain there. Thank you Kimi!

Truth be told, I picked up this book thinking it would be a lot different than it is. I expected a wintery “cabin in the woods,” murderer on the loose-type thriller. It’s not that. These Silent Woods is a chillingly unique psychological thriller; a suspenseful story that explores the mental states of its characters. What's real and what's not?

Told from the perspective of “Cooper,” who’s haunted by memories of war and his past, he’s a father constantly on edge, willing to do anything to keep himself and his daughter together. And like Cooper, it will have you suspicious of every thing, every motive, every one. It had my heart beating and bleeding!

What an ending. Just..... wow! Was not expecting that!

I enjoy stories that feature kids and strong male role models and fathers. This novel definitely hit all the right notes with that, and the depiction of the relationship b/w Finch, an 8 yo girl, and Cooper, her father, was touching and real. I especially liked how living off grid created resilience in her. There were a few off-notes in her portrayal, such as a girl that age ingesting poetry and adult literature and using language such as "livid" in a journal. Yes, kids can be precocious, but that was over the top and not believable. I feel like those are the times when the author's interests are inserted, rather than the characters'. The writing itself could have also been vastly improved with a better editor; there was a ton of repetition and the overuse of filler words like "something" and "someone." This is my personal pet peeve that may not bother others. In regard to the plot, Cooper is a war vet that is afflicted with PSTD, and I felt empathy for his suffering and for his motives in raising Finch alone and sequestered. The character of neighbor Scotland is odd, to say the least, and the reader is given conflicting glimpses of him. There is a subplot involving a mysterious girl that shows up on their property, triggering panic in Cooper, and things become complicated after that. Cooper then makes decisions that alter their current lifestyle, and Scotland is brought into it in a way that is confusing. If you must have nicely wrapped up endings that make sense, then this is not the book for you. All in all, the story kept me reading, and the strong father daughter bond is the redeeming feature here.

These Silent Woods by Kimi Cunningham Grant. It was a story I couldn’t put down. Not so much a ‘thriller thriller’, so I’m unsure why it’s classified as such, but the storyline is so incredibly well thought out, and I really connected to the main characters.

I suppose it’s a drama – not a book I’d normally pick up, but the cover had me intrigued, the title had me hooked, and despite no ‘thriller’ things happening, I couldn’t put These Silent Woods down.

For eight years, Cooper and his young daughter Finch have lived in isolation in a remote cabin in the northern Appalachian woods – no electricity, no connection to the outside world. As we get further into the story, we discover the reasonings behind his choice of living, but it’s getting to the nitty gritty side of things – Finch is starting to get antsy and is getting older, pushing back with attitude and wanting to discover the things around her.

There are other characters too that come into the story, one in particular who despite his personality, I couldn’t figure out if he was a good guy or a bad guy.

These Silent Woods had me really rooting for Cooper, and despite his misgivings I truly wanted him to come out of everything unscathed. Did he? Did he not?

It’s on Kindle Unlimited. So best be on it!

This story is unrealistic. So you live in the woods with your baby off the grid. What about if either of you get sick? Everybody gets sick now and again, specially babys, so then you cannot hide, you have to go to a doctor and show your face. How about education? You need textbooks. Jake brings supplys for a year, he must have a very big truck! The girl stays 16 years in the woods, then goes to school and graduates when she is 18, yeah sure. And then the ending is also very unrealistic. This is a novel for romantic dreamers.
For me is was 17 euros down the drain.
