“What do you want to be when you grow up?”

Rick Culleton’s answer never changed:
not poor.

Messed Up Like You is the wild but true story of a troubled man hustling his way to a better life. Honest, harrowing, and hilarious, Rick’s memoir weaves flight lessons with his journey from pizza waiter to serial entrepreneur, pilot, and athlete.

It’s flight school for everyone who dreams of soaring.

Rick Culleton was 15 when he was first arrested. Unathletic and written off by his teachers, he barely finished high school and went straight to prison.

In his 20s he hustled used cars and spiraled into debt. Rick struggled with blows that would have most of us throw in the towel. He was too scared to tell his wife when he faced yet another prison sentence, this time levied by the IRS.

Has life dealt you a bad hand?
Do your past mistakes haunt you?
Does your inner voice whisper big dreams are not for you?

Messed Up Like You is the rags-to-riches story for the rest of us. If you like true stories that inspire, that make you laugh, that compel you to act, then you’ll love Rick Culleton’s memoir.

His honest and profound advice will help you
✓ Honor commitments
✓ Avoid the woe-is-me-trap
✓ Let go of anger
✓ Like yourself with all your flaws

Never, ever give up. Your past does not define you!

Messed Up Like You by Rick Culleton is a well-written memoir that provides a roadmap to overcoming negative parts of your life which usually happen after living a hard life. He was a patient with ADHD as well as anxiety but managed to overcome his sufferings and rose as a successful entrepreneur. Nowadays, ADHD exists in both adults and children. While some can cope with it, others are severely affected.

The author helps these individuals on their journey by elaborating on his life experiences, struggles, failures, achievements, challenges, and lessons experienced throughout his life. Being a pilot is quite challenging, but Culleton overcame his fears and failures with a positive attitude. It is an inspiring book that motivates ADHD patients to overcome their fears.

Texas author Rick Culleton’s life has been like fireworks: big bangs and booms at ground level, and soaring, radiant displays across the sky. Reading MESSED UP LIKE YOU initiates a sense of fervor for striving for a better life, following the sticks and stones becoming triumphs that have molded Rick’s life. Related more like a podcast than a journal, this book opens windows of admiration for a life of successful perseverance.

The honesty with which Rick writes increases admiration: his early life does not suggest his future: ‘Aside from ADD which I never outgrew, I struggle with ongoing anxiety, have had to become honest about addictions to gambling and drugs, faced two felony convictions, and been through bankruptcy and heart surgery. But none of it has stopped me.’ One of the several aspects of this book that makes it so involving is Rick’s experiences learning to fly airplanes - ‘I have always been fearful of heights and lack a good sense of orientation, all of which makes me an unlikely candidate for flying a plane… Mickey [his trainer] putting me in charge of his aircraft was one of the best things that ever happened to me. It showed me that my anxiety, fears, and limitations don’t have to define me.’

The astonishing life Rick shares includes multiple encounters with entering the business realm - from handling newspaper distribution to work in a pizza parlor up to the tech industry with computer sales, real estate, and hospitality businesses in both Texas and Costa Rica, overcoming lawsuits and physical distractions - each step accompanied by reflections on his approach to life, a series of sound injections of advice from which everyone can benefit. Some examples: ‘from experience comes strength,’ ‘allow for imperfection in others and in ourselves,’ ‘the importance of liking yourself,’ ‘optimism is a habit,’ ’if you don’t take a risk, you will never be successful,’ ‘most things worth striving for require an open mind, practice, and relentless willingness to improve,’ ‘overcome reluctance, or even resistance, to change,’ ‘No fear is stronger than the fear of the unknown. Agreeing to go there anyway, takes courage.’ And those are but a few of the pungent jewels of thought shared in this invaluable tome.

Both fascinating reading entertainment and a trove of cogent advice, this book is a winner, offering - ‘If we want something badly enough, we can sometimes make a dream come true.’ Rick Culleton is a mortal phoenix! Very highly recommended!

Messed Up Like You is a truly remarkable journey of resilience and triumph. I think for this kind of book, it is important to be clear and being easy to read, and this author really understand it. I loved to read a book that blends perfectly vulnerability and strength, proving the authors ability to turn adversity into success. From struggles in school to a stint in prison and financial turmoil, this story is a proof of hope for those facing their own challenges. In my opinion, this book is incredible; it is so real and grounded that sometimes, it made me cry. The author's battles with anxiety, ADHD, and societal judgments are so rough, and instead of being defined by these struggles, he transforms them into stepping stones for achievement. This is more than a book; it is a call to action for anyone seeking resilience, motivation, and a path to their best selves.

As a person who has ADHD, I found this book truly inspiring and insightful. Firstly, it's quite short, which makes it an good read if you find yourself easily distracted. Secondly, Culleton's personal journey is written in an amusing and endearing way, without coming across too preachy. If you have neurodivergent tendencies that affect your personal growth and career then I would recommend giving it a read. While he doesn't provide a blueprint for success, his story proves that you can achieve positive results if you put your mind to it!
