- Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2024Infectious Generosity by Chris Anderson offers a fresh and inspiring take on the concept of giving. The book challenges traditional ideas of generosity, framing it not just as an act of kindness, but as a transformative force that creates a ripple effect in communities. Chris Anderson skillfully combines personal stories, research, and practical advice, making it easy to see how small, intentional actions can create lasting impact.
What sets this book apart is its emphasis on generosity as a mindset rather than a one-time act. The idea of "infectious" generosity highlights how kindness can spread from person to person, changing the world in unexpected ways. I found the insights not only uplifting but also actionable. Whether you're looking to make a difference on a small or large scale, this book offers tools and inspiration to help you start right where you are.
Highly recommended for anyone who wants to bring more purpose and connection into their lives through the power of giving!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2024Infectious generosity begins with a simple idea: Giving inspires others to give and generosity occurs in many forms that go beyond the material. Any time we make the effort to reach out to others to encourage or soothe, we are giving of ourselves. When we cooperate with others for the common good or encourage connections among people with common interests, we are being generous. When we respond to anger with compassion, we are being generous. And while some of us can give money or time, others can give attention and provide needed recognition to people who might otherwise feel invisible or alone.
The author has been visionary in bringing together creators and donors to bring nascent projects for benefiting mankind into the world at scale, much as a doula helps bring infants into the world. His Audacious Project has helped to address problems ranging from poverty, disease, and inequity to the existential threat of climate change. The non-profits it supports are conceived and developed by dedicated creators, while the donor community provides the means for them to grow.
While he discusses some of the religious guidelines for sizing personal donations, generosity is fundamental to the underlying message of religion. A tenet in Judaism, for example, is Tikkun Olam, the sacred responsibility to repair the world. Every type of generous act described in this book has the capacity to relieve suffering and to maximize hope and happiness. What better way to repair what’s broken in our world?

- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2024Great intent - but it's a person of privilege and wealth writing to like minded people with the free time and resources to consider moving to part time work, to host Jeffersonian dinners, etc. Disposable time and income? Then yes, check this out for inspiration. Working full time plus extra to afford insurance, to support relatives who are aging or with disabilities (for instance)? Then each subsequent chapter might make you angrier about the book's assumptions.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2024What Chris Anderson has written here is a brilliant book. He is such a humble human given he has the power to make or break people lives. What kind of a person with that power splits open their guts and begs anyone who will listen to learn the knowledge he has gained over a lifetime, so they can have a more joyous and purpose filed life. Please run for President Mr. Anderson!
Here are just a few of the truths he passionately shares;
-The formula for giving a successful pitch/talk (This alone is worth the money p.186)
-How to find happiness p.48
-Attention is the most precious gift we can give someone. P.68
-How to give wisely if you are rich.
-Where to start with generosity.
Perhaps the boldest insight of the book comes in its final chapters and it pretty much rocked my world, he concludes if everyone would adopt the Muslim and Christian doctrines of giving, we could save the world...from everything. P.205 “It becomes clear that the two ancient traditions of giving- tithing and zakat-could provide the basis for all the philanthropy the world needs.”
As a devout Christian who pays tithing, it’s always been clear that the TED organization dislikes religion and goes to great lengths to distance itself from discussions about it. So to have Chris share such an insight was heart stopping. It would be interesting to know of the 200 employees at TED how many of them are actively religious. Chris gives us small insights into his inner turmoil with God and religion and makes it clear he is not drinking the Koolaid.
In a book tour interview online with Jon Ronson, Chris mentions that TED may be inviting different religious views for TED Talks. Interesting. Also, during his interview with Ronson in London they had a brief Q&A, one woman from Russia asked what his thoughts were about countries not allowing religion and how Russia has been a country without it. Chris did his best to answer the question but, the struggled was real. If TED were to bring Russel Brand to the stage to share his recent conversion story, I’m sure donors would pull funding. Good luck with this Chris, if anyone can do it you can. The world so desperately needs to see organizations trying to work with people they don’t see eye to eye with.
At the heart of this book Chris takes corruption by the throat and boldly declares, “You can’t win! We are better than this! We will figure this out!” We need more Chris Andersons in the world.
The book is such a gift, thank you for taking the time to write it. Your mom would be proud. My wife and I run a small company and are looking at a way we can improve our giving efforts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Empowering
The media is awash with doom and gloom, we are surrounded by strife and danger. We are helpless pawns in a world out of control...
...or are we? This book says no! We can and do make a difference every single day, we are generous, we care, we are empowered. Mostly aimed at those more monied than most it still gives you ideas and ways to enact generosity no matter what your income.
The world needs more generosity, those that live here need more generosity, your neighbour needs more generosity, you need more generosity. Give until it doesn't hurt. Put humanity back into Humanity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Values that Make the World A Better Place
In this book there is some challenging but important advice offered.
It is clear that this is based on Anderson's underlying value system which was influenced by his parents. He may have found alternative, secular explanations as to why these values matter but that's useful. It highlights why religions can provide examples but don't have exclusive rights to them as ways of behaviour.
I used Anderson's story and some of the tips in this book for a sermon to show how alot of people have rejected religion but are doing more good in the world than many churches who want an exclusive hold on this stuff and this gives us some great ideas on how to join in.It encouraged alot of the congregation and set their minds alight. I love the idea this book is for everyone

5.0 out of 5 stars Read Infectious Generosity, then lend or gift it onwards...
Having read this wonderful book, I realise that generosity is like a muscle; the more you exercise it, the stronger it grows.
Packed with uplifting examples (both large and small), Chris Anderson's book will reaffirm your belief in human nature. He is no pollyanna and makes clear the stifling effect social media can have on generosity and even common decency. But this book is ultimately very uplifting and offers a blueprint for how to offer (and receive) more generosity in life.
I rarely lend books, but this one will be given to others with an ask to pass it on.
