About this item

  • Silber Fiber: What sets this thread apart from the other conductive thread that we carry is the fact that it’s actually spun from silver fiber making it incredibly smooth and without the loose hairs seen on other Robbins.
  • Super Low Resistance & Ultra High Condutive Performance:It means the resistance is as low as about <100 Ω/m (<4 Ω/ft).Suitable for hand or machine sewing (as a bobbin thread).
  • 65ft/20m for a Robboin: This is 20 meters of smooth conductive thread wound on a metal Robbin. Use it to sew up all of your e-textile projects.
  • This small bobbin is a great way to get into wearable electronics without the upfront cost of buying an entire spool of thread. Close to 40 feet of thread is enough to get a simple design stitched onto your shirt, backpack or hat.
  • Package: 2x robbins conductive thread; 1x needle threader; 1x needle;

What Are Sewable Electronics?

Sewable electronics combine traditional craft processes (sewing, fashion design, and textile design) with electrical engineering, computer science, and hardware skills.

With sewable electronics, you can create e-textiles (electronic textiles), which are often wearable, flexible projects that look less like traditional electronics and more like craft and art projects. Many e-textile projects replace wiring with flexible conductive materials such as conductive thread and fabric. For the projects in this guide, we will be sewing circuits together with conductive thread.

This thread works to modify gloves/fingertips so you can use your gloves with a touchscreen phone. Of course, you have to sew the thread properly, which isn't hard. As people mentioned, the thread needs to be placed where your fingertips contact the glove fabric and the touchscreen. So put the glove on firmly, touch your phone and use a sharpie to draw marks on the fingertips where they contact the touchscreen. When you sew the thread, use a hooked/curved needle and make big loops through the fabric. Remember the thread needs to be in contact with the touchscreen and your fingertip simultaneously, so make sure to use a generous amount of thread on BOTH sides of the glove: outside and inside. Again, my gloves don't look pretty, but they work. I modified my thumb, pointer and middle fingers so that I can tap and pinch and zoom easily. With two spools of thread, you have plenty to modify 4-5 gloves. I only do my right hand glove. The gloves don't look pretty but it works.

Avid Pokemon Go player here, needed to keep my hands warm as I play during winter. This is a great solution and much better than the gloves trying to sell you on being "touch screen compatible" when often they aren't.

A tip for increasing conductivity and reducing headaches with trying to make it work: sew the pad on the outside as best you can going through to your finger (I wear the glove on the finger I need sewn) then flip the finger and repeat on the inside, being careful to overlap on the thread you put in the outside (now inside out) part of the glove. This will create a nice surface area for your finger to interact with, and complete the circuit between your finger, going through the glove entirely, and to your phones screen. Now I barely have to tap to make it work! I made my pads semi thick just to be sure but you can play with however much you need first and add from there accordingly.

5.0 out of 5 stars It works. Get artsy!

Works great. I tried to get a little decorative with my stitches. On the inside of the glove I made sure to leave a long tail to increase contact with the skin. On top of that, I did rope stitch on the seam of the finger, again to increase contact. Once that was done then I went to stitch the finger tab. Not sure how long this will hold up for but as of now it’s solid. You can double the thread. I did. It’s double and single. It would be great if the thread came in black tho.
