A collaborative memoir from deep inside mass incarceration within the United States, Beneath Our Numbers is a collection of essays written by individuals who have collectively spent well over a century behind bars. Though not intentional, the essays often reflect similar life experiences by individuals who have never met. There are recollections of violence, poverty, marginalization and trauma long before incarceration, and as the writing will suggest, many remain incarcerated long after incarceration serves the interest of justice or public safety.
Among the writers are those who were sentenced as juveniles, those serving life without parole, those on death row, and those who are innocent. Each writer is a part of the Walk In Those Shoes (WITS) 501(c)(3) writing family and have come together through a shared love of writing and an effort to raise awareness. They are:

I bought this book because of my interest and concern for mass incarceration and the nonproductivity and senselessness of it all. My interest was peaked since my son has been tumbled around in the system for several years.

Each writing, poem, and short story is written by a person beneath an inmate number. To my delight, they are quite talented writers. The words invoked laughter, tears, and further deep felt concern about the many injustices that exist within our justice system. The publisher wanted to "inform and broaden dialogue" about our system of justice and rehabilitation. By bringing the voices of the incarcerated to the table, this book allows for a more balanced, realistic, and well informed platform for that conversation.

For me, this book was a quick read. The individual author's entries are thought provoking about the different reasons that brought them to the position they find themselves in today, their commonly shared history of traumas, their shared experiences of being on the inside, and their innermost thoughts. Each submission lead me wanting to flip the page to the next one.

I wish I had written this review prior to the holidays. I would have recommended it as a gift idea. As soon as I got half way through the book, I ordered two more copies as gifts. I also sent a copy to my son who is incarcerated at this time. He appreciated the book, as well as identified with it. If you have a loved one who is working their way through our system of justice and rehabilitation, I would still recommend sending this book to them as an "anytime" gift or Valentines day gift.

I would recommend the book to anybody, students of our justice system, families of the incarcerated, citizens concerned with mass incarceration and the inherent injustices of our failing system, and lovers of literature that feed our souls and humanity. Buy it for yourself. You will not be disappointed.

The fact someone has the compassion and drive to help those incarcerated get their writing published is amazing.

As a corrections nurse, I think this is an amazing read; so many times, people don’t see someone for more than their alleged crime(s), but I’ve had the opportunity to care for folks from all walks of life, each with a story to tell. Very interesting and well-done!
