5.0 5.0 out of 5 stars 52 ratings

Nic, a whip-smart fourteen-year-old cowgirl from rural Colorado, longs to grow up quickly and be somebody. When a summer tragedy spirals out of control, Nic blames the curse of the late Comanche Chief Greenhorn – also a teen – who similarly is devastated when his tribe and homeland are taken. Through Nic’s and Chief Greenhorn’s intertwined paths, adversity, redemption, and grace are discovered. Who do you become if you lose everything?

“It's rare to see a supernatural saga turn into a life message that will draw young adults with intrigue and conclude with new empowerment possibilities. Greenhorn is all this and more—a vivid, enlightening story that libraries and readers will find compelling, unexpected, and thoroughly engrossing.” – Diane Donovan, Midwest Book Review

“Cheryl Hunter's Greenhorn showcases impeccable story pacing, a highly relatable narrative, and the chapters thoughtfully crafted to showcase Nicole's growth and her profound journey of self-discovery. This book presents a mirror to the struggles of youth, making it easily relatable and enjoyable for a broad audience.” – Karen Almeida, Literary Titan

“Nic's journey is fraught with tragedy as one event is eclipsed by the next, and she seeks guidance and gifts stemming from her Native American heritage and spiritual training to break the curse's hold .… the ending delivers a twist that leaves us feeling at peace.” – Jamie Michele, Readers Favorite

Greenhorn delivers an unexpectedly dynamic narrative that keeps you turning page after page for more of this intriguing tale. I was surprised to find out this was Hunter's debut young adult novel, as first forays into this genre are often filled with overly flowery, derivative storytelling...and this was anything but!

Combining the highly relatable woes of youth with the mysterious pull of the Native American curse and how it weaves its way into the main character's (Nic) storyline was incredibly fresh, unexpected, and still grounded in the real roots of the Colorado scene in which the tale is set.

If you've read anything of Cheryl's personal life story, it is also immediately present how much of her incredible life story is infused into this brave, curious, and resilient protagonist. Additionally, the importance of how she highlights the Cuerno Verde curse from a new, relatable teenage lens gives this story a deeper resonance with almost any reader - but especially those who have been misinformed or were otherwise unaware of the history of Greenhorn.

There are some deeper and more difficult plot moments in this novel (more dark and tragic) - so I'd recommend it for no one younger than about 13 or 14, but well worth the read.

Greenhorn," Cheryl Hunter's latest novel, is a poignant and captivating tale that resonates deeply with me, as someone who grew up on a Reservation. The story of Nic, a 14-year-old cowgirl from rural Colorado, intertwines beautifully with the historical narrative of Chief Greenhorn, a Comanche teen. Both characters, though separated by time, share an emotional and spiritual journey that speaks volumes about loss, identity, and resilience.

Hunter masterfully crafts a narrative that is not just a coming-of-age story, but also a deep dive into the struggles faced by young individuals when confronted with life-changing adversities. Nic's character is particularly relatable. Her longing to grow up quickly and be somebody, only to face the harsh realities of life, mirrors a universal journey of growth and self-discovery. The supernatural elements tied to Chief Greenhorn's curse add an intriguing layer to the story, blending history with a touch of mysticism.

The book is praised by Diane Donovan of Midwest Book Review for its unique blend of supernatural saga and life lessons, and I couldn't agree more. It's a story that enthralls young adults with its suspense and leaves them empowered by its conclusion. Karen Almeida of Literary Titan commends the book for its relatable narrative and thoughtful pacing, a sentiment that echoes my experience. The chapters reveal Nicole's growth and her profound journey in a manner that is both insightful and engaging.

Jamie Michele of Readers Favorite highlights the tragedy and the spiritual guidance that Nic seeks from her Native American heritage, which for me, adds a layer of personal connection to the story. The ending, with its peaceful yet surprising twist, leaves the reader contemplating the central question, "Who do you become if you lose everything?"

"Greenhorn" is more than just a novel; it's a journey through the eyes of a young soul grappling with the weight of history, personal loss, and the quest for identity. It's a must-read for anyone who appreciates stories that are as heart-wrenching as they are inspiring, and for those who seek to understand the complexities of growing up and finding one's place in the world.

Greenhorn is a gripping Young Adult novel that takes readers on a journey of redemption, second chances, and self-discovery. The story unfolds through the eyes of Nic, a whip-smart fourteen-year-old cowgirl grappling with tragedy and the weight of a generations-old curse tied to the Comanche chief, Greenhorn.

What sets Greenhorn apart is its ability to transition from supernatural intrigue to a compelling life message seamlessly. Nic's journey from an ordinary high school student to a resilient young woman facing adult challenges is both relatable and inspiring. Hunter's own resilience shines through in her writing, drawing on personal experiences to deliver a narrative that resonates with authenticity.

Greenhorn is a vivid and enlightening story that captivates readers with its unexpected twists, relatable characters, and a powerful message of empowerment making it a compelling read for both young adults and a broader audience. Highly Recommended!

As a 50 year old man who was born in Uganda and and overcame life threatening near death experiences, I can relate to a lot of Cherry's work.

We are both from Colorado, makes me happy to be following her work.
