The creator of the Polyvagal Theory explains the principles in simple terms that are accessible to all.

Since Stephen Porges first proposed the Polyvagal Theory in 1994, its basic idea―that the level of safety we feel impacts our health and happiness―has radically shifted how researchers and clinicians approach trauma interventions and therapeutic interactions. Yet despite its wide acceptance, most of the writing on the topic has been obscured behind clinical texts and scientific jargon.

Our Polyvagal World definitively presents how Polyvagal Theory can be understandable to all and demonstrates how its practical principles are applicable to anyone looking to live their safest, best, healthiest, and happiest life. What emerges is a worldview filled with optimism and hope, and an understanding as to why our bodies sometimes act in ways our brains wish they didn’t.

Filled with actionable advice and real-world examples, this book will change the way you think about your brain, body, and ability to stay calm in a world that feels increasingly overwhelming and stressful.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"At last, a simple, eloquently straightforward, and comprehensive rendition of one of the most important recent advances in psychology and physiology, by its pioneer. Stephen Porges, ably assisted here by his son Seth, places his indispensable Polyvagal Theory into the context of our present-day frantic, post- pandemic, complicated lives and thereby guides us toward the safety on which our well-being, personal and social, depends. Essential reading; this book leaves me filled with appreciation."
Gabor Maté, MD, CM, author, The Myth of Normal

"Stephen Porges cracked the code with his Polyvagal Theory for the physiological mechanism of the human socio–emotional exchange system upon which we build our emotional landscapes.
Our Polyvagal World reviews the theory and reminds us that the importance of others is baked into the human genome. When we look at the effects of traumatic events, we must recognize how our nervous system responds and changes, and impacts how we react to stress long after a traumatic incident. Finally, the authors show us that the solutions lay in the interpersonal deployment of the vagal exchange."
Drew Pinsky, MD, FACP, Board Certified Internal Medicine/Addiction Medicine

"This wonderfully useful book combines the groundbreaking power of Polyvagal Theory with penetrating clinical insights and warmhearted practical tools―all for greater healing, resilience, and well-being in a stressful world. You can feel the kindness of its authors on every page, with candor about their own father–son relationship and what they’ve learned inside of it. The scientific aspects are explained with masterful clarity. With applications to couples, families, education, and institutions such as prisons, there is value here for every kind of reader. And so timely as we recover from past social disruptions and face new ones. Truly a gem.
"
Rick Hanson, PhD, author of Resilient: How to Grow an Unshakable Core of Calm, Strength, and Happiness

"In this excellent book, written for the layperson, Porges and Porges outline their important and internationally acclaimed concepts...Polyvagal Theory has made major contributions to our understanding of how stress and trauma changes our bodies and also how, by working with the autonomic nervous system, we can find balance again. As such, it has made major contributions to psychotherapy and the importance of social connectedness in our lives. A must-read for anyone who wants to understand how the autonomic system regulates emotional states and what they can do to cultivate well-being.
"
Paul Gilbert, PhD, OBE, author of The Compassionate Mind

"
Our Polyvagal World is an awesome book...I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the science of safety and to anyone interested in living a better and healthier life without having to commit to extreme measures. And if both apply to you, this book is a must.
"
Diana Fosha, PhD, developer of AEDP, founder of the AEDP Institute, and editor of Undoing Aloneness & the Transformation of Suffering Into Flourishing: AEDP 2.0

"In this book, the authors explain the Polyvagal Theory in a simple, relatable way that is easy to absorb and understand…. Reading it inspires moments of personal recognition and life-changing understanding, but it goes one step further to give us the practical tools we need to deepen our social bonds and sense of safety in this stressful modern world. It’s an empowering, hopeful book that you will be glad you read.

A must-read to understand universal responses to big- and little-T trauma and safety!
This easy to read and comprehensive book takes an extraordinarily difficult subject and breaks it down into layman's terms that makes it not only understandable, but applicable in everyday life. I've long been interested in Polyvagal Theory — since hearing Dr. Stephen Porges speak at a conference in 2017 — but the complexities of the theory have always been a bit out of grasp. Enter: Our Polyvagal World. Dr. and Seth Porges do a fantastic job of providing real-life examples of how trauma (both "big- and little-T" trauma) shows up in our bodies, and what that means for the way we move through the world. I was astounded to learn about the physical manifestations of feeling unsafe (particularly as it pertains to auditory functions!) but the book is *chock full* of tidbits like this that serve not only as education, but personal empowerment.I can't recommend this book enough!! Whether you think you're interested in trauma response and somatic healing or not, this is a must-read to understand the basic mechanics of how our overly-scheduled and fast-paced world has an effect on how we function as a human species.

Great book on how the vagus nerve and trauma affects our body, not just our mind. I didn't know how important feeling safe is to our mental and physical health. Very eye opening.

Porges states that in the vagus nerve, 80% of the nerves move up from body to the brain and only 20% moves down from brain to body. So instead of Descartes quote "I think, therefore I am," it is more "I feel, therefore I am."

Easy to understand terminology and examples. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants overall wellbeing.

So far I'm more than half way through the book. It is well written, though some political ideology comes through, it is easy to follow and understand what polyvagal theory is and how it plays a part in our lives. So far the only thing I have learned about helping to calm the nervous system is through some breathe work so maybe it is a long winded book to read to learn to just breathe in more deeply and exhale more slowly and long than your inhale. Over all a very interesting read.

I read this book yesterday in one sitting. I feel it is truly THE book for our era.
So important. It should be required reading for everyone!
I was already familiar with Polyvagal Theory, but this book puts clear words to much of my (and I’m sure many other people’s) felt experience, and it breaks open new paths to healing and does so in an easy to read, approachable way.  I love how it explains not only Polyvagal Theory but also weaves in all the associated theories and examples… Highly readable and informative.  And perhaps most importantly, it's very human… it’s such a humanistic book - it’s not formulaic - it bridges scientific findings with a spiritual understanding, and much warmth. Great book… it’s such a valuable compendium of useful information presented in a very readable and digestible manner. Thank you to Stephen & Seth Porges for having made this book. I think it’s a genuine act of public service.

I've read all of the major books on trauma, listened to the podcasts, watched the YouTube videos, and have spent countless hours in therapy. Suffice it to say, this isn't my first time at the "self-help" rodeo.

It's not that those things weren't beneficial, I've just never connected with a book the way I did with Our Polyvagal World. It's full of information that I hadn't heard before and the theory, science, and biology behind the vagus nerve resonated with me as it makes more sense for my, uh, flavor of trauma.

Since reading this book I have been able to acknowledge, process, and benefit in ways that I hadn't been able to before.

I’m so appreciative that Dr. Porges and his son Seth took the time and care to craft this book for us. Translating complex research and ideas into language that we can all relate to and repeat back with ease is hard work.

I am especially fond of a great metaphor and the “self driving car” example to explain the ANS is the best example I’ve heard so far. It resonates with my clients, as well. This is just one example of why this book is a helpful guide to providers in the healing arts and sciences to help bring life and color to Dr. Porges deep scientific contributions.

I read this book and feel incredibly connected and related to it.
it is a surprisingly positive and unexpected familiar way to learn about how traumas have create a grid of mental processes, that do not help us.
I had not though about how to help myself on regards fear and what causes fear because external motives, and can analyze myself with tools that this book explains.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helped me understand the concept of mind.

This book emphasized to me the importance of safety in a person's development. I often speak about the freeze, flight flight system and how fear diminishes cognitive ability so this book has really deepened my knowledge. For instance, one of my grandchildren was travel sick and nobody could understand why he didn't tell anyone he was feeling unwell. His description of being 'detached from the world' was something that made sense to me because of the knowledge I gained from this book. This book is a great starting point as it is written with the layman in mind. It's describes three different neurophysiological states and why each one is useful in the right circumstances. It explains the role of the vagal nerve in the brains two-way communication with the organs in the body. I think this model of understanding should be taught in schools.

This is an extremely helpful book in distilling the academic and scientific theory into laypersons terms. The passion is clear in the work and it’s clear and digestible. But, I was left asking…but how?! This book misses by not really including any practical exercises on how to self regulate - it’s such a crucial part of the picture especially if you pick this up hoping to learn to self regulate. Even a short chapter on how would have made this perfect. There is some mention of breathing, but it’s not enough to understand the practice of taming the vagus nerve.
