- Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2023Throughout this text, Dr. Nelms offers readers an honest, humble, and intimate glimpse into the real situations and raw emotions that guided his journey in daring (and succeeding) to lead and create a sustainable model of educational change for Rochester’s children and community. The text’s guiding questions and scenarios offer new, emerging, and accomplished leaders unfolding opportunities to face their own realities and beliefs with honesty, compassion, and the powerful lens of deep self inquiry. Thank you, Dr. Nelms for offering the field a realistic tool book for how to overcome situational challenges while simultaneously daring to serve in your footsteps on our own paths to providing equity and access for EVERY student and family in the communities we are called to partnership with.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2023While primarily intended for leaders in education, Leading With Purpose by Dr. Shaun Nelms offers lessons that apply beyond the field. Dr. Nelms candidly offers relatable workplace scenarios/challenges in the book as *opportunities* to grow from. Many of the chapters conclude with questions (and space to write down your responses) to apply your learning, reflect, and think deeper about the leadership lessons presented. The biggest theme that stood out for me in Leading With Purpose, is the importance of being vulnerable. When a leader can own their missteps and correct course, it gives others permission to “fall forward.” I highly recommend this quick and easy read for anyone looking to become a more effective change agent in their community.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2023My office had the pleasure of having the author, Shaun Nelms, as our guest speaker at a team retreat. He embodies the leadership and inspiration that he writes about in his book Leading with Purpose. Months after the retreat, team members are still talking about his advice around leadership principles, particularly his concept of distributive leadership where everyone plays a role based on common goals, not hierarchy. Though the book looks at leadership specifically in an educational setting, the themes and ideas are applicable to all workplaces. They will be meaningful to anyone looking to bring a sense of purposeful change to their organization.
