Living and Leaving My Legacy, Vol. II: A Legacy Journal Paperback – June 19, 2023
Purchase options and add-ons
Initially, each subject was roughly 75-450 pages and was taken from journals dated between 1974-2016. After careful editing, I have chosen excerpts that best capture my thoughts, feelings, conversations, encounters, memories, dreams, travel adventures, and more. I hope that sharing some of my life lessons, values, beliefs, hopes, and dreams in this book will prove valuable to others. Besides the journal entries in Living and Leaving My Legacy, Vol. ll, the book also has reflections after each chapter. These reflections are based on thoughts, feelings, and memories that surfaced from reading these excerpts. Following my reflections are journal prompts on each subject and blank pages on which one may write, should they be inspired by the prompts or something they've read in the chapter.
Merle R. Saferstein trains hospice staff and volunteers showing them ways to help patients leave their legacies, and works closely with the patients at the end of their lives doing sacred legacy work. For many years, she has volunteered at a camp for children who experienced the death of a family member—helping them gain important tools, including journaling, to cope with their grief. Merle also conducts an all-day parent session at these camps. In addition, Merle facilitates a writing for wellness group at Gilda’s Club for women impacted by cancer. She is also currently involved in Wisdom of the Century, a project that interviews individuals ninety years old and older.
Merle has facilitated a weekly journaling circle since April 2020, at the start of the pandemic. She is a council member of the International Association for Journal Writing, is the author of Room 732, a short story collection that pays homage to the historic Hollywood Beach Hotel and a B.R.A.G. Medallion Honoree, and is a contributor to the Huffington Post, Medium, Authority Magazine, Women Writers, Women’s Books, and Thrive Global. As a pioneer in the field of legacy journaling, herchapter on the subject appears in The Great Book of Journaling: How Journal Writing Can Support a Life of Wellness, Creativity, Meaning and Purpose.

-David Lawrence Jr., retired Miami Herald publisher and chair of The Children's Movement of Florida
"Socrates taught: 'The unexamined life is not worth living.' Merle Saferstein's glimpse into her voluminous journals is proof of that adage. Writing her thoughts and chronicling her experiences virtually day by day has enabled her to recall, reflect, and share her journey. We can be grateful as she invites us into her life and friendships, her travels and her travails, her costs and struggles, her loves and her passions-all that makes life worthwhile. Her work with Holocaust survivors and with death and dying gives a special poignancy to this work, as she wrestles with ultimate issues."In Biblical terms, one who is four score years reaches the years of their wisdom. Though but slightly shy of that milestone, Merle has been wise for a very long time. Read this book and you will understand how one might live life with wisdom and understand the discipline it takes to examine and reexamine one's life. How blessed we are with what she has shared. I found myself moved, encouraged, and coaxed into reexamining my own life as you will as well."-Dr. Michael Berenbaum, Distinguished Professor of Jewish Studies, Director of Sigi Ziering Institute, American Jewish University, Los Angeles"In the second volume of Living and Leaving my Legacy, Merle Saferstein shows us how to honor the memories that give our lives meaning, and how to explore the treasures of what we've learned and the people who have made our lives richer. What a significant legacy this is: the lessons, all that we've witnessed, and how we carry parts of each other with us forever. The book reminds us that we too can capture our lives through keeping and exploring our journals, and what such a worthy endeavor that can offer us later in our lives."--Linda Joy Myers, Founder and president of the National Association of Memoir Writers, and author of Don't Call Me Mother and Song of the Plains."In her book, Living and Leaving My Legacy, Vol. ll, Merle Saferstein shares wisdom and lessons learned through journal entries spanning several decades of her life's journey. "On Death and Dying" is a chapter dedicated to exploring a topic too often hidden in silence, something all of us will experience in our lives, grief. Her honest reflections, observations, and moments of learning and teaching are captured in this chapter reflecting statements and questions so often thought or stated by people in mourning.
"From personal losses to hospice and grief support, Merle validates the thoughts and feelings many of us have or will experience and honors traditions and culture through a lens of curiosity, free of judgement. Attending to important grief topics ranging from anticipatory grief to continuing bonds, Merle honors the pain of loss and the growth of learning and honoring the memory of people we cherish that defines the duality in grief that most call the roller coaster or waves of emotions. The journal prompts at the conclusion of the chapter encourage similar reflection, questioning, and self-compassion for the reader to externalize their own grief in a connected and mean

About the author

I am an educator, speaker, and author. Since 1974, I have amassed a collection of 380 journals. The majority of these journals are the basis for my legacy journal Living and Leaving My Legacy, Vol. l, which was released in June 2022. The book is a compilation of excerpts from 359 journals and is divided into eleven topics including journaling, marriage, parenting, career, spirituality, and more. Living and Leaving My Legacy, Vol. ll will be released on June 20, 2023. This volume includes chapters on friendship, travel, Holocaust survivors, death and dying, legacy work, and much more. The excerpts in each chapter are followed by journal prompts. My hope is that when reading about my life, the readers will look at their own lives and understand that how we live our life becomes our legacy.
Most of my career has been in the field of education both as a teacher and an administrator. For twenty-six years, I served as the director of educational outreach at the Holocaust Documentation and Education Center in South Florida where I worked closely with hundreds of Holocaust survivors ensuring that their legacy is perpetuated for this and future generations.
After retiring, I created Living and Leaving Your Legacy®, which focuses on preserving and passing along the essence of one's life. Through classes, workshops, and lectures, I have guided thousands of people in sacred legacy work, writing for wellness, and journaling.
My short story collection, Room 732, pays homage to the historic Hollywood Beach Hotel. I live in Miami, Florida with my husband of fifty-five years and have two children and two granddaughters.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2024The author beautifully captures her story through decades of journal entries on various topics, including relationships, travel, death, and dying, and her passion and commitment to her work as the Director of the Holocaust Documentation and Education Center, where she worked with Holocaust survivors.
The book clearly shows the author's commitment to journaling and sharing her legacy through these detailed journal entries.
I'm also impressed with the last section of the book, in which the author includes chapters on Living and Leaving Your Legacy, Legacy Projects, and even Legacy Projects to Do with Your Children. These chapters serve as an inspiration for readers to begin thinking about their legacies. Many thanks to Merle Saferstein for sharing her life, her work, and her legacy with us.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2023It’s impossible to summarize the breadth and depth of thoughts and emotions revealed in Merle Saferstein’s Living and Leaving My Legacy. Her subjects range from the rewards and challenges of relationships to death and dying, travel, and how to deal with loss and grief. One central part are the haunting, often inspiring stories of Holocaust survivors.
The entries are excerpts from decades of journaling spanning Merle’s life as wife, mother, and friend, her work at the Holocaust Documentation Center, as legacy educator, hospice volunteer, and more. We participate in Merle’s joys and fears, her losses and her successes. We admire her commitment to help others, no matter the cost to herself. On every page we appreciate her openness to talk about intimate experiences. This encourages us to reflect more deeply on our own lives and the legacy we want to leave behind.
For this is one main goal of this monumental work: to demonstrate by example the rewards of journaling and encourage us to follow her example by examining our lives and in the process leave a legacy from which others can benefit, a valued gift to family and beyond.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2024In Living and Leaving My Legacy, Volume II, Saferstein shares more poignant and insightful reflections and stories in the form of journal entries. No topic is off limits, as she covers topics ranging from travel and relationships to death/dying and leaving a legacy. I especially liked the sections about legacy projects, including projects to do with children. I highly recommend this excellent and thought-provoking book, full of sage life lessons!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 3, 2023In Saferstein's second volume, she tackles heavier subjects a new range of subjects plus the her most poignant, death and dying and the Holocaust. No one has a deeper or more empathetic understanding than a woman who has devoted her life to these subjects, assisting others, being a voice.
Because these excerpts are the author's journals, their recollection spans the decades and shows a keen insight into history, evolution, and honesty. There's a lot to take in. This one must savored.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2023Vol. II is a work to be savored. The chapters on Living and Leaving Your Legacy, Legacy Projects, Legacy Projects to Do with Your Children, and Writing an Ethical Will will inspire you to lead a more meaningful life yourself and also give you concrete tools for leaving your own legacy. As wonderful as Vol. I was, Vol. II goes even deeper and is not to be missed. It can change your life.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2024I treasured reading Merle's journal excerpts. They were filled with her deep-seeded thoughts, feelings, and wisdom about relationships, working with Holocaust survivors, writing an ethical will, and more. As I read them, they stirred up many of my own memories and thoughts. Merle's engaging writing will draw you right in.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2023In my review of volume I of “Living and Leaving My Legacy” I suggested that it would be a great tool for TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) teachers. Volume II is a great tool to help us unlock our lives, guide us through them to the end, and through creating a legacy, beyond. Publishing a memoir is an act of courage, presenting it in a form that can give the readers invaluable help in navigating their lives is generous, caring, precious. I did myself a favor when I bought and read this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2023I read Vol 1 and loved it, but Vol 2 is even more incredible, if that's possible! I loved reading Merle's perspectives over the years and the events that happened 30+ years ago...sadly, it all seemed like it was written in the present since history continues to repeat itself. The stories from Holocaust survivors is a part that should be read by everyone on the earth. Their stories need to be kept alive and Merle has done an outstanding job in helping that happen. This part isn't an easy read by far, but it's a necessary one and one I'm grateful for. I'm so grateful that Merle not only kept all of her journals but is sharing so much with us all.
