A familiar spiritual is recast as a pledge to remember history and make a better future, and the lockstep of words and art feels as if Weatherford and Morrison were in harmony from the outset.A scene of a slave in shackles and another one for sale gives way to a portrait of Nat Turner and then to one that is an homage to the Emancipation Proclamation and the Great Migration. Portraits, like stepping stones through history, well-explained and documented in the back matter, reference people or moments mentioned in Weatherford's verses, from the Tuskegee Airmen, Duke Ellington and all of Black music, Ruby Bridges, Martin Luther King, Jr., Florence Griffith Joyner, Colin Kaepernick, and Black Lives Matter. The force of the words along with the glowing, sculptural lines of Morrison's paintings will draw onlookers into the journey through time and pain, to two modern children carrying protest signs and facing readers directly, ready and hopeful for what's next.     Frank Morrison started his journey as a graffiti artist in New Jersey, tagging walls with spray paint. It wasn’t until he visited the Louvre Museum in Paris with his dancing group, that he realized painting was his true creative path. His work has been featured at Art Basel, Scope Miami and Red Dot art fairs, and shown at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and the Mason Fine Art Gallery in Atlanta, GA. He is the illustrator of over 20 children’s books, including the Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award winner R-E-S-P-E-C-T, the Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe Award winner Jazzy Miz Mozetta, and the Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor books, Little Melba and her Big Trombone and Let the Children March. Frank was a Society of Illustrators’ Original Art Silver Medal Honoree two years in a row, for The Roots of Rap and R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

A Must-Read American History!
STANDING THE NEED OF PRAYER is one of my all-time favorite spirituals, so I was thrilled to see this as a picture book. Author Carole Boston Weatherford masterfully uses verses from the song to bookend her modern retelling, with the main text rhyming couplets that complement the song and bring the reader through an American History, from 1619 to the present. Illustrator Frank Morrison's powerful paintings will invite conversations, and the backmatter provides additional information on the people featured in his art. This book makes a fabulous read-aloud on its own for any age, and would be fabulous as a intro for older students for both history and music classes.

Our Children's Librarian was in need of some more books, with no 'extra' cash in the kitty for 2023, so she asked for donations, & being an avid book reader, & am thrilled to see all the kids who also love reading, I did not hesitate to purchase this book as well as another one. (Next review) I did read this book before I gave it to her, & I knew I made the right choice. Definitely would recommend this book for the younger kids.

I saw the audio available for free from the Libro.fm ALC program and so I decided to give it a listen, twice.

While still moving and classically powerful, I think I would have liked the illustrated book more.

I enjoyed the narration by the author, but I am a sucker for beautiful and emotionally moving illustrations.
