CLERKS UNCENSORED (ANIMATED SERIES)
Amazon.com
Writer-director Kevin Smith revives the characters of his indie classic film Clerks for this animated series created for network television. Though it aired for just two episodes on TV, the two-disc set has all six episodes plus a bevy of special features.
The episodes feature store clerks Dante and Randal and their ongoing adventures among the shelves of your local corner store. Never far from the epicenter of these adventures are the irreverent Jay and Silent Bob. Whether it's getting trapped in the walk-in cooler, attending their high school reunion, or fighting rival Leonardo Leonardo (who wants to dominate the local Quick Mart market), Clerks spoofs TV and movies with mocking pop-culture jokes and cameos by a number of celebrities. Ultimately, though, Clerks: The Animated Series suffers at the hands of network censors, lacking the obnoxious punch that made Clerks the film so offbeat and amusing.
Smith doesn't disappoint, however, with the inclusion of a number of special features on the DVD set, most notably the ever-insightful director's commentary with guests Jason Mewes (Jay), Brian O'Halloran (Dante), and Jeff Anderson (Randal). So while the series itself may be ill-fated, featurette on the making of the animated series--including storyboards and information on character development and the comic book influence on the drawing style--make this a robust offering for Kevin Smith completists. --Adam Medros

- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2007TV history is filled with the obituaries of series that were really good but died prematurely. To me, one of the most apt examples is Police Squad that ran only six brilliant episodes before disappearing (although it was fortunately resurrected as a set of movies). Another example would be Clerks, the fantastically funny animated follow-up to the movie. It was canceled after a mere two episodes, but the collection Clerks - Uncensored includes all six episodes that were made.
The four principal characters are the same ones as in the movie (and are voiced by the same actors). The main character is Dante, the convenience store clerk who is intelligent and a nice guy, but also the eternal victim, condemned to life working at the Quik Stop, even on his days off. He constantly bemoans his fate but has no ambition to change it. His best friend and biggest oppressor is Randal, who works at the adjacent video store. Randal is also a lifetime clerk, but he is not bothered by his career; he is perfectly comfortable doing nothing and treating other people like garbage. Then there are Jay and Silent Bob; in the movies, they are drug dealers, but for network TV they were toned down to fun loving slackers.
Taking full advantage of the animated medium, the episodes get both weird and funny in ways the movie (or live TV shows) could not be. The first episode pits the Clerks against Leonard Leonard, an evil Montgomery Burns-like billionaire intent on taking over the world with an ultra-convoluted scheme. By Episode 2, we already have a flashback episode when Dante and Randal are locked in the Quik Stop freezer and reminisce about old times. Episode 3 puts the Quik Stop under quarantine after Leonard Leonard takes ill after a monkey bite; is it a dreaded virus or some bad burritos?
Episode 4 has Dante on trial after Jay slips and falls in the store. Randal defends him, an effort sure to doom Dante, although things resolve in a typically bizarre fashion. Episode 5 is a cross of Bad News Bears and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (with a dash of the Last Starfighter). The final episode has Dante and Randal stuck in the store while more and more strange things happen outside. This episode concludes with an homage to a classic Warner Brothers cartoon; if you don't recognize it, it will be mentioned in the commentary.
The commentary is indeed an important part of the set as the principals provide plenty of humorous insights into the history of the show: how it was made and why it died so quickly. It is a classic case of the network "suits" acting on quick and erroneous judgments. There are other extras as well, but even without these special features, the shows themselves merit five stars (although, like Kevin Smith movies, they will not appeal to everyone). It's a shame that shows like Mama's Family, Full House and Family Matters could last for years on TV while a more deserving show was never really even given a chance. Happily, at least on DVD, Clerks lives on.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2015It's not hard to see why many people didn't take to the idea of a Clerks cartoon--it's so different from the movie, the argument could be made that they should have just revamped the scripts with new characters and a different title, and might've been successful. It's a shame, though. While Clerks TAS bore little resemblance to the indie film that brought creator Kevin Smith to fame, it was a damn fine comedy along the early-Family-Guy-episodes vein. In fact, Clerks TAS seems to me to be a more authentic reflection of Smith's personality (as I've seen it in his personal interviews and appearances) than was the original movie. Hindered by many people's expectations from it sharing titles and character names with the latter, the former actually exceeded all of my expectations with its quality. It's really funny. The last episode disappointed me greatly--felt like they really phoned it in, unfortunately. The real shame is that every good show should be allowed a dud here and there, and most do worse than a 5/6 success rate.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2014Enjoyed it when it was on tv, enjoyed it when I got my first set and enjoyed it once again when I had to rebuy it. I dont know why people get so upset about this series. I saw it as a good time and fun had by all. It isnt deep, it isnt thought provoking but it is a fun time. If you want some extra Kevin Smith and gang in your life buy this. It will set you back 5 bucks delivered. You wont be sad. If you want deep and though provoking as well as disturbing get Vulgar. If you want to have a good time get this.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2023This series was a birthday gift for my grandson and he thoroughly enjoyed it.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2019A fantastic cartoon. This show much like the original movie brings the funny! The foul mouthed quick to insult clerks are full of jokes, sarcasm, and unenthusiastic energy! Lots of jokes, excellent skits, and who doesn’t love a show that has a flashback episode for the 2nd episode.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2011Being a big Kevin Smith fan I couldn't pass up this dvd. It has all the episodes of the animated series and is very complete. My wife isn't a big fan of the movies but did find herself enjoying this animated series. While the movies are not for young viewers the animated series is ok. It says uncensored but I didn't really see anything that needed censored. If you like anything that Kevin Smith did or are just wanting to dabble in the Clerks realm this is definately the best and safest way to go.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2019Don't go into this expecting anything too similar to the movies. That being said, this is an amazing cartoon. It's tragic it didn't continue on. I think this was way ahead of its time, comedy-wise.
Definitely worth picking up for the Clerks fan.
