Attack problems like a Viper!

A main responsibility of fire/EMS department leadership is problem solving and fixing issues. However, the industry lacks a standard framework and tools to address problems in a systematic way. This makes it difficult in identifying causes of problems, creating solutions that last, and managing risk. This book provides leadership solutions for fire and EMS department membership including operational officers, administrative officers, senior/lifetime members, rising/aspiring firefighters and EMT’s, and rookie members alike through the V.I.P.E.R. Improvement Model.

The V.I.P.E.R. Improvement Model is a fire/EMS specific bundle that uses an organized set of business tools to uncover and solve issues that present themselves to departments. This book provides a quality improvement structure on how to build a strategic plan, how to conduct a root cause analysis, how to measure performance and poor variability with control charts, how to develop a marketing plan and forecast, how to manage a membership with strategic human resources and motivation-based management, how to change a process that lasts, and how to analyze and manage risk. The V.I.P.E.R. Improvement Model can help you become a more effective leader within your fire or EMS department. This book can also act as a great supplement text to any first responder or public safety leadership, management, quality improvement, or officer training course.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Great book and resourceful for officers to navigate the many challenges outside of fighting fire and treating the sick and injured. Has a process and approach to ensure the organization grows, remains focused on its purpose, and most importantly has the tools and resources to grow its people and systems to be the best." - James McClelland Jr., Chief Officer, Instructor/Lecturer, NFA EFO

"V.I.P.E.R. Improvement: Fire/EMS Department Leadership and Management by Dr. David Hupp introduces a specialized framework for solving problems in fire and EMS departments, addressing gaps in standardized approaches to leadership challenges. This model covers strategic planning, root cause analysis, and risk management with tools specifically tailored to emergency services. Leaders, officers, and aspiring members are guided to improve performance, motivation, and resilience within their teams, ensuring sustainable, positive changes in operations. Dr. David Hupp's structured approach to problem-solving is both innovative and practical, making complex leadership strategies accessible to first responders with confident and inspiring language. His ability to translate business management techniques to fit the unique culture of fire and EMS services shows insight and adaptability to different situations, and I found the V.I.P.E.R. model easy to understand despite it not being an area I was familiar with at all. It's easy to see how the model would create a lasting, positive impact in emergency services, going beyond temporary solutions to make real change in ways that people can action from the earliest moments of reading this book. Hupp's clear, direct writing style enhances the book's usability as both a guide and a reference for leaders at all levels. Overall, V.I.P.E.R. Improvement: Fire/EMS Department Leadership and Management is a valuable resource for those seeking to improve their department's operations and foster a culture of resilience, and I would certainly recommend it." -Readers' Favorite Book Review (K.C.
