Over the course of this season, showrunner Terry Matalas reunites the TNG crew with a new version of Data using one of Altan Soong’s (both played by Brent Spiner) “golems” introduced in the first season (and referenced in the fourth season of “Star Trek: Discovery”), an older and more sage-like Worf (Michael Dorn), Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) who is still dealing with the loss of her and Captain Riker’s son, Commodore Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton), and the previously-mentioned characters. He builds on story threads from “Star Trek: First Contact” and the Dominion War seen in “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.” Matalas also features references to Odo and appearances from Commander Ro Laren (Michelle Forbes), Admiral Elizabeth Shelby (Elizabeth Dennehy), and Captain Tuvok (Tim Russ). Matalas’ third season of “Picard” is tonally quite different from the first two seasons, but it also serves a different purpose. Rather than explore the inner life and traumas of a single character, “Picard” season 3 serves as a proper finale and farewell for the cast of “The Next Generation” in a way that “Star Trek: Nemesis” did not, though fans can still see earlier adventures of Captain Riker or other characters through animated stories on “Lower Decks.” The stories feature all the Easter eggs a Trekker could want to connect this story to the other TNG-era shows and films. It also offers the possibility of further Trek stories set in the twenty-fifth century, following the TNG crew’s children and mentees.
This beautiful steelbook edition of “Star Trek: Picard – The Complete Third Season” is a great way for fans to add it to their home media collection. Bonus features include audio commentaries, “The Gang’s All Here” – a look at reuniting the TNG cast, “Villainous Vadic,” a gag real, a Q&A session, a making-of for the final episode of season 3, “Rebuilding the Enterprise-D,” and deleted scenes.
Now that that's out of the way, the first two seasons of Picard were to say in the least, incredibly disappointing. Patrick Stewart seemed completely disinterested in doing an actual Star Trek show, insisting that he didn't want to wear a uniform or command a Federation starship. Eventually he wizened up though, and so we were given this season.
What I love most about season 3 is that every character is given something meaningful to do in the plot. Nobody is just there strictly for fanservice (though there is plenty of that too). This results in largely satisfying arcs for everybody. The more action-focused narrative keeps the pace moving briskly unlike the previous two seasons which moved like a snail. Captain Shaw is an awesome addition to the cast, and others like Sydney Laforge and Jack Crusher are likeable too. I can't say there was a single bad episode for me. They were all fun to watch.
But it's not without flaws. There are still problems with tone and characterization. The lighting is still overly grimdark. I do not like the revisionist take on Jean-Luc being the guy always intentionally throwing himself into danger and conflict like Kirk. What differentiates him as a captain is his insistence on always seeking a diplomatic solution first. Other characters sometimes have weird lines that I feel like don't quite fit either, but on the whole, they're much more consistent than the previous two seasons. Much as I enjoyed Worf's return, his side plot also felt like it was over-laden with exposition rather than natural and compelling dialogue. The plot as a whole has a tendency to veer too much into Star Wars territory rather than Star Trek. The villain has a bland and generic evil bad guy backstory, and is played a little too cartoonish, despite otherwise being entertaining. Lastly, this season was lacking a good central social or political theme, making it feel somewhat vapid compared to Star Treks of the past.
But I find myself hand waving a lot of this because at the end of the day it's just so damn fun to watch and it's nice to see Star Trek making a comeback finally after years of disappointment and having nothing but The Orville to carry Star Trek's legacy.
A mild disappointment that there's no 4K of this, but the regular Blu-ray still packs some very sharp visuals. Also the plastic casing seems to have some difficulty resealing when you open it and the second and third discs rest on top of each other without any separation, so a bit cheap with the packaging here too.
