An Aussie friend of mine recommended I try it (Peter Aawen, one of the mods over on SpyderLovers [Can Am Soyders]). Accordingly Peter prepped me on how when where (everywhere) to use it, namely a very thin smear. I found it delightful, Mrs. Jake, not so much. Don’t know if we shovel it an acquired taste but, I found it’s savoriness delectable so it’s over on top of buttered toast. I think I’m going to leave my bathrobe on for the rest of the day

So Vegemite. How to explain this.... My Aussie friend has been egging me on to try it for years. We met online in the realm of Moonguard on World of Warcraft where all the best role play happens. He was a dwarf. I was a mage, which is like a wizard for all of you non-geeks. Our friendship and the memories of all our epic adventures will last for generations. There were two moments in our history that tested the strength of our bond. The first was a role play technicality where another mage who was the principal of our little magic school guild forgot to say that his desk was magically sealed and locked down so that we weren't supposed to be able to break into it. Classic DM error, which led to us role playing for three hours on non-cannon storytime and ended in tears. The principal mage refused to divulge the secrets within even though my Dwarven friend successfully got the drawer open. The guild fell apart that day. And no one spoke to each other for a good while. But Vegemite worked it's own magic in our hearts and my Aussie friend and I patched our bond up and continued our adventures together. The second time our bond was tested happened not very long after when I noticed my friend went MIA for a good week without notice. My heart beat faster. My mind was occupied by what-ifs and oh-dears, and anxiety ruled those days with the possibility my friend may never return to our online community. But I wouldn't be posting about Vegemite today if that were the case. It turned out my Aussie friend had been hit by a car. He lived to tell the tale and ever since then, he became one of my best friends. One day, I asked him, "So what's one thing that you have in Australia that us Americans don't have?" Immediately and without hesitation, he replied "Vegemite." I mean, the first thing that came to my mind was vegetables and termites. But luckily, it's not as bad as it sounds. My friend offered to send it to me from his continent but my husband said "Whoa, whoa, whoa. How do you know this guy? He's from the internet. Don't give out our address to some possible crazy person that might travel here to do who knows what." Even though my friend and I were very great friends, I realized that I only know him as an intellectually superior dwarf with the ability to create the best story-arcs. And he only knew me as battle-hardened mage with ironic trust issues. Alas, my obtaining Vegemite was put on hold for a few years. During that time, stories flowed out of our imaginations like a cascading waterfall. We fought for freedom, triumphed over villains, and escaped improbable snares. Ah, those days were glorious! And all the while, in the back of my mind, the curiosity of the taste of Vegemite festered and grew like mold. I kept imagining vegetables and termites, and yet I remember the praise my friend had given it. So finally, I decided out of the blue to buy it here. I told my friend it was purchased. The date it would arrive was around the corner and both of us were excited for my impending verdict. Would I love it or hate it? I did my research of course, and listened to his advice on how to properly apply the spread, whether it be on a piece of bread, a piece of toast, or a chicken biscuit cracker. And then it arrived. My friend wasn't available to video chat as he is seventeen hours ahead of me (give or take) and it was in the dark hours of the morning for him. So I filmed it. I would share that as an attachment... but you know, it's the internet. So my words will have to suffice for your own amusement. The packaging of this product was fantastic, much like how the principal mage's desk should have been: secure, but penetrable with a little effort. At long last, the spread was before me. I sniffed it. It smelled salty. I prodded it. It was smooth and thick like tar. With slight hesitation, my American doubts flooded over me as I wondered how this item was so highly praised by my friend. The knife scraped over the bread and crackers I prepared for myself. Some had butter, some did not. I wanted to try it with various methods in order to come to my conclusion. Toasted bread is best. It does not matter if it has butter on it or not. But the end result was this: it tasted like soy sauce.

Old American here who tried Vegemite for the first time at age 70. When it arrived my wife said, "Why'd you order that? I could've told you that stuff's terrible." :-)

For my first try, I took another reviewer's (kelly's) suggestion and tried it on buttered toast. It was great! Now I like it as a spread on saltines too. I think it helps that I like salt & use it on a daily basis.

Vegemite has a bit of an after-taste that I'm adjusting to. But I don't find that bothersome; only noticeable. Plus I'm hoping those added B vitamins will be a good cognitive supplement.

File this under the "It sounded like a good idea at the time" category. Remember the days before you could Google something? I mean really. You have the whole world right at your finger tips via a smart phone or ipad. Any question you might have about any given subject under the sun is only seconds away from either being answered, or discussed. I have come to take this powerful tool for granted. I mean, here in my household absolutely NO question gets asked without trying to find an answer via a Google search. If we are sitting around talking and one of the kids asks a question that I don't know the answer to, I will always stop the conversation, and either A. refer them to what I like to call "The Giant Book of Knowledge", AKA their ipad, or B. look it up myself.

So the other day, we are all in the kitchen....My wife is cooking supper, the kids are at the table doing homework, and I am sitting at the bar mixing cocktails, and entertaining everyone by singing Land Down Under by Men at Work (and probably slapping the cooks booty at least once while walking around singing). Big fun. Anyway...after I sing the line "he just smiled and gave me a Vegemite sandwich", my son asked, `what is Vegemite'? I'll admit that up until a few years ago, I had no idea what Vegemite was. Mainly because that particular song lyric was my only reference to it. Then, a few years back I started following an Australian artist on tumblr, and she was always talking about how much she loved Vegemite. She described it as having the consistency of peanut butter, but the saltiness of beef bouillon, and mentioned that it was a staple in every Australians' pantry. Sounded interesting. But up until this question arose, this was the extent of my knowledge on Vegemite. So off to Google I go. Come to find out that it's a paste/spread made with leftover Brewer's yeast and sold almost exclusively in Australia. My son asks, `reckon what it tastes like?' Good question. Luckily, not only do I know how to use Google and Wikipedia, I also have Amazon prime, and 2 minutes later, an order had been placed.
It came in today.
As I was approaching the mailbox this afternoon, I saw the box sticking out of the mailbox. I knew exactly what it was. Finally, I thought, I'm gonna get to say I've had a vegemite sandwich! Yep. Just mark that milestone off my list, and update my facebook status. Chad has had Vegemite!
It was gonna be awesome!
So....I opened the box, inspected the jar, and anxiously screwed the lid off. Now y'all KNOW what I did next, right? That's right! I did exactly what any of y'all would have done. I smelled it. Funky. It kind of smelled like bread. I could definitely tell it was made from yeast. But it wasn't a pleasant smell. I decided to proceed slowly. So....using my pinky, I grazed the surface and got a small dab on the end. It's a little thicker than peanut butter. I swirled it around on my tongue a bit, and then swallowed. I then proceeded to spend the next hour and a half hour trying to get that nasty ass taste out of my mouth, because damn y'all....that right there is some nasty s***. I mean, hey...y'all Aussies got a cool little accent and all, and I loved Steve Irwin and Crocodile Dundee, but your snack food ain't worth a tinkers damn. Y'all need a big jar of Jif, and marshmallow creme. Can of Viennas. Salted dog turd. Something. ANYTHING! Trust me, this stuff is only sold down under for a reason. I'm assuming that since it's made with brewer's yeast, that our Aussie friends are caught in some kind of vicious cycle of brew, drink, eat, because you would have to be sloppy drunk to enjoy this foul, bitter, pungent puke paste. Now, lest I offend anyone who actually likes this salted s*** paste, let me just say that I KNOW we all have different tastes. Variety makes the world better, blah, blah, blah. I get it. I agree. But if you think Vegemite is tasty, I'm not sure we can be friends anymore. No....I'm kidding. But barring a zombie apocalypse food shortage, I'm probably gonna pass on Vegemite sandwich night.
