Editorial Reviews
Originally released in 2002, Divine Discontent is the fourth album from Sixpence None The Richer, the follow-up to their highly successful self-titled album.
Lead singer Leigh Nash has described her understanding of the album title as being that "sometimes your pain and the bad things you go through in life can be good if they bring you to a better place, a stronger place in your life," that is, "discontent can be divine."Lead songwriter Matt Slocum said that there is "spiritual content" in many of his songs which come from "trying to be honest about the issues of life," while adding that "it also comes more in the form of asking questions than giving answers."The cover of Crowded House's "Don't Dream It's Over" was one of the later songs to be selected for the album. Which went on to go Top 10 on the Billboard Adult Top 40 Chart.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2023While the first five songs are great, if you take the following tracks without paralyzed and eyes wide open, here is a suite of exquisite of moving and inspired music without compare. Stunning and moving with the most amazing orchestral arrangements I have ever heard.
The engineering and production are perfect...I really like how thick and dense the sound is presented. Especially how Leigh Nash's vocals are submerged in the mix. And the lack of lyrics in the booklet is a plus because it leaves the words up to the listener to interpret. A classic and criminally underrated body of music!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2002The agonizingly long wait is ended and another "fix" of Sixpence None the Richer is at hand.
After seemingly endless business troubles with their bankrupt label, the best pop sound of the 90's is back via Reprise Records with "Divine Discontent" - an apt name for this long awaited album after SNTR's "Kiss Me" brought them world-wide attention.
Matt Slocum's inspired creativity and Leigh Nash's angelic vocals will rocket the number 1 track "Breathe Your Name" to the top of the charts and their remake of "Don't Dream It's Over" as well as the last track, "A Million Parachutes" (Leigh's favourite) will soon follow.
A wonderful surprise is the very strong, "Paralyzed". Some have misinterpreted this song as "anti-war" which it is not. Rather, it is the true story of someone Leigh and Matt met while in Germany.
Leigh Nash has written two of the tracks and demonstrates that her creativity is as gifted as her voice. "Eyes Wide Open" is a rollicking romp of a song and one wonders how such a thing came from the diminutive Miss Nash!
Sixpence is changing, as they should, and this album marks that transition as new band members Jerry Dale McFadden and Rob Mitchell add their own new dimension to the Slocum/Nash phenomenom. Surely they are on their way to yet more industry changing milestones in their storied, wonderful, divine career.
Every album they have is 5 stars. Buy it!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2004Having heard just a small sampling from them in radio airplay, I was interested to see if this band's music was similar to some other bands I like, such as the Sundays and the Cranberries. Divine Discontent, from its suggestive and interesting title, through all the songs on the cd, is a beautiful and spirited compilation of music. Leigh Nash sings with a range from lilting melancholy, like on the tracks "Melody of You" and "A Million Parachutes", that are vaguely reminiscent of Harriet Wheeler's waif-like musical expressions with the Sundays; to inspired songs like "Tonight" and "Waiting on the Sun," that have a spirit recalling Yes: 90210 or Bono's early work with U2. There is even a sort of war protest song, "Paralyzed," told from the perspective of someone seeing a battlefield and trying to cope with the news of their friend being killed, with the repeated vocal chorus of "I breathe in; I breathe out," that impresses upon the listener a haunting contrast between dead and alive. Though, generally these songs are pretty gentle on the ears. Having read of the band's Christian roots, it kind of makes sense listening to their music. Without being overtly religious on this cd, they do communicate a depth of spirit that is a beautiful engine for much of their artistry. Sixpence None the Richer's Divine Discontent is great music, and a very listenable cd from beginning to end.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2006I just bought this CD and it hasn't left my player since. I'm at least 4 years too late in doing so-yes it is that good! I have 2 theories-if these songs were written pre-9/11/01, then, then Sixpence has the gift of prophecy. If post 9/11, they have the gift of reflecting America in mourning. This album is so of it's time. Confusion, remorse, shame and fear seem to grip these songs-occasionally the sun breaks through, and it is so beautiful. There is a song for artists on this album too, which I love. I have another theory that 6pence knew they would break up soon. I think they wanted to make this a masterpiece while they still could. And they did. Now, keep in mind that Leigh's voice is complex and not everyone will get it. Personally, I enjoy the fact that she will not bend to stylizations of her voice. It is what it is. She can't do it all. But combine the right song, and the brilliant acoustic guitar here with her, and you will be transformed somehow. What a great work this is. They will be remembered!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2023Super smooth transaction. Thank you so much.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2020Even though I have heard one song by this group over and over, I had never bothered to listen to them. What wonderful melodies and orchestration. What a beautiful voice. I will be collecting and listening to more of their albums.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2002For some reason, and I don't understand quite why, but I'll always think of Sixpence None the Richer as a glorified cover band. The songs I recall most fondly of theirs, besides that chirpy "Kiss Me" song that was played on the radio too much, aren't their songs. Sixpence, who did good covers of "Dancing Queen" and "There She Goes" on other albums, is excellent with other people's songs, though, which is why I bought this after hearing only a snippet of "Don't Dream It's Over" during a preview for the movie, "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days."
Leigh Nash's bright voice, still capable of conveying the emotional weight of the Crowded House song, is delightful on that tune and others on the album - though the original tunes they've done on this album aren't nearly as memorable. I just found myself listening to the one song over and over after listening to the whole CD only once.

5.0 out of 5 stars
