The SME Playbook for Human Rights Due Diligence (Navigating Business and Human Rights Bundle) Kindle Edition

Foreword
The conversations around business and human rights have often overlooked small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), despite the fact that they make up more than 90% of the world's companies. As a result, leaders of these enterprises have approached me for advice on how to prepare for the upcoming wave of human rights due diligence laws. This book is my response to their call for help, providing practical information, advice, and templates.

The guidance provided in this book is specifically tailored to SMEs, but the steps outlined are good business practices that can benefit any organisation. The focus should always be on building an ethically strong and principled company and, by embracing these values, SMEs can prepare themselves for the challenges of human rights due diligence.

While larger companies will bear the primary impact of the new human rights due diligence laws, SMEs must also be ready to meet the challenge, as they will be required to meet their clients' demands for compliance. This book offers practical advice to help SMEs align their values with those of their clients and establish a strong ethical foundation. Inarguably, SMEs are more agile and can get ahead of big business on this.

SME leaders will find guidance in this book on how to create a culture of care and integrity, choose business and supply chain partners wisely, and foster a team that upholds ethical principles. These steps will enable them to navigate the upcoming legal requirements with confidence.

However, this book is not solely about complying with human rights due diligence laws. It is about building a company that is strong, ethical, and prepared to face any challenge that may come its way. With the advice in this book, SME leaders can take steps to create a better company and a better future for themselves and their stakeholders.

In the end, it is crucial for SMEs to realise that their actions have a significant impact on the world around them, and by embracing the principles of human rights due diligence, they can help create a better, more just, and more sustainable future for all.
