Although she can predict the weather much better than the boys in her family, no one thinks that Phyllis the groundhog has a chance of replacing the aging Punxsutawney Phil when Groundhog Day's official groundhog retires.

We already had this book for my son and he LOVES it. The ending really makes him giggle. With Groundhog Day approaching, my son asked if we could buy another copy for his class so the teacher could share it with all the kids. The teacher and the kids loved it, especially since some of the animal characters had some of the same names as the students.

I read the book to my Kindergarten and 1st graders but really wasn't what I was looking for for Ground Hog Day.

This book was originally called Punxsutawney Phyllis Punxsutawney Phyllis . This is not the Wake up Groundhog in which Ms. Pigeon tries to wake groundhog with a variety of clocks,(my favorite) by Carol L Cohen  Wake Up, Groundhog! . This is also not the Wake up Groundhog in which groundhog is awaked by a group of his friends, who go back to sleep when he tells them there will be six more weeks of winter, by Susan Korman  Wake Up, Groundhog! (Little Golden Book) .
So, this is the Wake up Groundhog in which Phyllis gets to predict when spring will come. She is better at it than her brothers, anyway.
All three of these titles are appropriate for young children ages 2 or 3 and up; though this particular title is a little wordy to use at storytime for my taste.

There aren't many books about groundhog's day out there and unfortunately this one doesn't live up to much. The illustrations are colorful and full of detail but the story ends by the groundhog getting revenge on his 'friends' who woke him up early. It doesn't seem like a good moral to be giving children.
