Reinventing Masculinity: The Liberating Power of Compassion and Connection Paperback – October 13, 2020
Purchase options and add-ons
--Paul Gilbert, PhD, author of The Compassionate Mind
In a recent FiveThirtyEight poll, 60 percent of men surveyed said society puts pressure on men to behave in a way that is unhealthy or bad. Men account for 80 percent of suicides in the United States, and three in ten American men have suffered from depression. Ed Adams and Ed Frauenheim say a big part of the problem is a model of masculinity that's become outmoded and even dangerous, to both men and women.
The conventional notion of what it means to be a man--what Adams and Frauenheim call "Confined Masculinity"--traps men in an emotional straitjacket; steers them toward selfishness, misogyny, and violence; and severely limits their possibilities. As an antidote, they propose a new paradigm: Liberating Masculinity. It builds on traditional masculine roles like the protector and provider, expanding men's options to include caring, collaboration, emotional expressivity, an inclusive spirit, and environmental stewardship.
Through hopeful stories of men who have freed themselves from the strictures of Confined Masculinity, interviews with both leaders and everyday men, and practical exercises, this book shows the power of a masculinity defined by what the authors call the five Cs: curiosity, courage, compassion, connection, and commitment. Men will discover a way of being that fosters healthy, harmonious relationships at home, at work, and in the world.

About the authors
Dr. Ed Adams earned his Doctor of Psychology degree from Rutgers University. He is a licensed psychologist and Founder of Men Mentoring Men (M3), a not-for-profit organization supporting men in their quest to live happier lives. Now in its 30th year, M3 has touched hundreds of lives by creating a shame-free space for men to discuss, challenge, support, and journey through the complexities of life. Currently, Ed is in private practice in Somerville and Lambertville, New Jersey specializing in the treatment of men.
In 2013, The Society for the Psychological Study of Men and Masculinities Division 51 of APA awarded Ed the Practitioner of the Year Award. In 2018, Ed served as President of Division 51and has helped strengthen the Division to become a stronger voice by highlighting the research, treatment guidelines, and applied psychological skills that help men thrive. Ed’s major presidential initiative was to encourage men and women to recognize compassion and self-compassion as masculine traits.
Ed is also an accomplished painter and sculptor. He was commissioned to create a bust of Oscar Schindler that was presented to Steven Spielberg and a 13’ bronze sculpture that honors Raoul Wallenberg. His paintings are in private collections, universities, corporate collections, and museums. In 2017, Ed published a book, Becoming A Happier Man: A Man’s Guide to Living a Full and Meaningful Life. This book couples his paintings with the essential ingredients present when a man declares himself as … HAPPY.
Reinventing Masculinity: the Liberating Power of Compassion and Connection (2020) is co-authored with Ed Frauenheim. The authors provide men and women with a practical and updated vision of masculinity designed to cope with the complexities of the 21st Century.
"Put the right letters together and make a better day.”
I quoted that Prince lyric in my college senior yearbook in 1989, and it describes what I’ve been trying to do for nearly three decades as a journalist, researcher, speaker and book author.
My main topics are masculinity and workplace culture, as well as the intersection between the two.
Most recently, I published Reinventing Masculinity: The Liberating Power of Compassion and Connection. My co-author Dr. Ed Adams and I explore the hopeful shift under way from an outdated, unhealthy and “confined” masculinity to a "liberating" one that frees men and those around them to live fuller lives at home, at play, at work and in the world.
I have co-authored three other books.
A Great Place to Work For All, published in 2018, shows that today’s leaders have to meet a higher standard: they have to create a great workplace culture for everyone, no matter who they are or what they do for the organization.
I also co-authored Organized Innovation: A Blueprint for Renewing America's Prosperity, published in 2014. It argues that America's approach to technology development in recent decades has been disorganized to a fault, and that a new, more coordinated method is needed.
In 2011, I co-authored Good Company: Business Success in the Worthiness Era. It documents the evolution of corporate social responsibility, making the case that companies increasingly must prove themselves worthy of their employees, customers and investors.
I currently serve as senior director of content at research and advisory firm Great Place to Work. I also co-founded the Teal Team, a group aiming to help organizations evolve into more democratic, purpose-driven, soulful places.
Earlier in my career, I spent roughly 20 years as a journalist, with stints at technology media firm CNET Networks, the Oakland Tribune chain of newspapers and Workforce magazine. I also have worked as a freelance writer for publications including Wired magazine, Salon.com and The Dallas Morning News.
I've made more than 75 speaking appearances to live and online audiences. I also have organized and hosted events.
I serve as a board member of the Berrett-Koehler Authors organization and as a board member of Berrett-Koehler Publishers.
I live in San Francisco with my teenage son and daughter and artist wife Rowena Richie. In my spare time you can find me doing Qi Gong with Rowena, dancing to Daft Punk and playing disc golf with a good friend.

Whatever your gender, I recommend this book highly. Although it comes from a male perspective, the principles described apply to all people struggling for emotional balance and meaning in this world. I agree with the authors that some of that stuggle is different for men, but their testimony and ideas apply much more broadly than that.
The book is full of stories, practical ideas, and ways of living to help us all live a more connected, compassionate, committed life. I found myself in tears over some of the stories, and the book gave me a structure to understand and continue the path of personal growth that I am on; a path full of much more heart and feelings than the traditonal "constrained" masculinity that I was raised with would allow.
The book really brings together the expertise of both authors, extending from personal psychology to the workplace. As a man struggling to find a way to lead and manage in an age of "me too" and emotional awareness, this book had a lot to say to me. Empowerment and equity in the workplace is a struggle for men, who have traditionally held a position of privilege. The book spoke to me as a call to move beyond these traditions, to a future that works better for all people, including the men who are in many ways limited and constrained by their traditional roles, no matter what privileges that may include.
A truly groundbreaking book. Buy it, read it, and find a window into the soul and psyche of yourself and the men in your life.
I spent nearly two years facilitating corporate workshops designed to bring people to a common understanding of the ways in which gender stereotypes influence what we see, whom we include, how we behave, and what we teach/how we raise kids, among other things. This book offers the types of insights generated in those workshops -- insights that can lead us, as another reviewer said, to rethink our lives in a good way. I wish this book were available when I was facilitating! Great resource for how to move from confined masculinity (what The Representation Project termed "The Mask You Live In") to liberating masculinity, which frees not only individual men, but also those around them.
