Chasing Dust: A witty story full of romance, wanderlust & creating your own happily ever after (Six Degrees Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 23 ratings

A house in the desert, an old journal, and the secrets they keep.

Cali Clarke is a successful product designer in San Francisco, who lives for work and happy hours with her best friend. Or at least she did until her mother’s unexpected passing. Since then, nothing feels quite right. But when her efforts to settle her mother’s estate reveal a secret house in New Mexico, Cali knows her only hope for answers are in that house. She has to go.

The high desert is a complete change of pace, forcing Cali to down-shift from incessant emails to watching literal paint dry. It’s almost bearable, until she unearths her mother’s journal from thirty years prior. Cali's only reprieve comes from befriending a vivacious coffee shop owner and the handsome, and hopefully single, bartender down the road.

But when family secrets surface, Cali discovers her own life isn’t as black and white as she thought. With her friendships and career on the line, can Cali make peace with her past before she destroys her future?

For lovers of Emily Henry, Katherine Center and Jenny Colgan, Chasing Dust is a funny and heartfelt story of finding home where you least expect it. These pages will transport you through food, culture, and history into the beauty of the American Southwest.

Easy read, but not a dumb read. We all need some escape at this time. I have been looking for books that do that without making me gag. This one did it. I love nature so the descriptions were great. There were a few grammar issues that were easy to overlook. I am not that much about romance, but at least it wasn't all about that. I have already downloaded the next one. Please keep writing, you are on the right track.

Chasing Dust by Dani Keen (@onekeencreative) is a beautiful journey of self-discovery, found family, and secrets. This small-town romance dives into the characters’ individual struggles and decisions that take their lives in unexpected directions.
The main character Cali, while grieving the death of her mother, discovers the keys to a house she knows nothing about. Her life is crumbling around her, which leads to an unexpected trip to this small town. In seeking to know her mother better, she learns more about herself and what she wants in her life.
I also love how Cali is introduced and explores cultures that are not familiar to her. I am a Northwest Native American and I appreciated how the Southwest Native American experience was mentioned and respected. A bigger piece of culture that Cali explores is the Mexican influences on New Mexican life. There is a beautiful mixture of art and music from traditional backgrounds that all come together in New Mexico.
This book was so enjoyable to read, and I feel deeply connected to the characters. Very few romances and contemporary pieces speak to me, but this was one of my top contemporary reads of the year! Five out of five stars, I highly recommend you picking this book up!

Chasing Dust is a story that was just a bit outside of my typical realm of romance, but I was very intrigued about the storyline and wanted to give it a try!

Cali is a product designer living in San Francisco. She lost her father when she was a teenager and then just recently lost her mother in a car crash, leaving her without any biological family. As she's going through the process of clearing out her mom's house and settling the estate, she founds out about a house in New Mexico that her mom had owned for 30 years and never told anyone about. Despite her strained relationship with her mom, Cali has been flailing in the month since losing her and feels like she HAS to go see this house. She heads out with her dog Otis to NM, putting her job in San Francision at risk, and dives into learning more about her mom. She finds a journal of her mom's from the time when she bought the house and begins working her way through it. She also starts fixing up the house so she can sell it. Along the way she meets Lena, a coffee shop owner, and Alex, a bartender. Her relationships with both of them continue to develop as she learns more about her mother and the people she knew when she first moved to New Mexico.

I enjoyed the setting of the book and got wrapped up in the family mystery. At one point I found myself trying to google the names in the book like they were real people to see if I could solve the mystery myself! I also really enjoyed reading about Alex and Cali's art adventures! It was really interesting to learn more about the culture of the Southwest since I've never been there myself.

There was an open door romance throughout the story but ultimately the story was focused on Cali learning about her past to learn more about her present and set a path for her future. I'm looking forward to reading more books from this universe in the future!

    WOW.

Cali and Lyla's story sucked me right in and took me to a town I'd never heard of, but now desperately want to visit! Dani Keen's story really did feel like a vacation...one with turbulent emotions, discovery, ups and downs, new friends and new loves. What I found myself clinging to was the frayed relationship between a daughter and her late mother and as we got to dive into each of their stories, I couldn't tear myself away. Cali herself is a dynamic character, but throw in a mother who you feel like you barely know and a mystery to unravel, rooting, cheering for and crying with Cali becomes so natural.

What I loved even more that the character arcs in this novel was how Dani brought the setting of Taos, New Mexico to life. The colors of the mountains, the smell of the coffee and conchas inside a cafe, the tastes of authentic Mexican cuisine, the places Cali and Lyla each visit...I was enveloped by the beauty of a small desert town that I never knew existed.

Cannot wait to read Chasing Dust again, and all of Dani Keen's future work!

I was hooked on Cali and Lyla's story pretty much immediately after starting this book. I love a good mother/daughter arc and the author did this in a way that felt SO real, with ups and downs and finally closing it out in a way that felt both satisfying and true. The author describes the location- Taos, New Mexico- in such a vibrant way that I felt as if it were a character all it's own! The history of the town and it's people was weaved masterfully into the story. The use of Lyla's journal kept me turning the pages well into the night, when I probably should have been sleeping ;) The different voices of Cali and Lyla (through her journal) was so well done. The characters truly shone through the pages. And this is a bit of a SPOILER ALERT...but I have to mention that Cali and Alex's sex scene was possibly my favorite of any I've ever read- zero cringe words, it just read so naturally and beautifully! Loved it...I might go read it again now!

Loved this book! It was sad to read that she didn’t have a great relationship with her mom while she was alive but throughout the book it was beautiful how her love and respect for her Mom grew. Her story with Alex was also great and I loved that he was the artist! The end of the book was wonderful.
