Ubiquiti In-Wall APs
eDealerTech
Product Description
The sleek and elegant Unifi in-wall HD AP transforms an Ethernet wall connection into a simultaneous, Dual-Band 802.11AC Wi-Fi access Point with 4x4 MIMO technology. Easy mounting: The back plate offers multiple mounting holes for use with a variety of 1-Gang electrical wall boxes. Led: the unique provisioning LED provides administrator location tracking and alerts for each device. Secondary Gigabit Ethernet: four ports are available for bridging – one of which offers PoE pass-through when the AP is powered by an 802.3at PoE+ switch. Superior processing power: the Unifi IW HD AP is capable of complex operations (guest control, filtering, and other resource-intensive tasks) that may slow down a lesser-equipped AP. Power over Ethernet (PoE) standard: The Unifi IW HD AP can be conveniently powered by an 802.3af or 802.At compliant switch. We recommend powering your unified devices with a unified PoE switch (sold separately). Unifi PoE switch: available in 8, 16, 24, and 48-port versions with multiple power output options, The Unifi PoE switch conveniently offers auto-sensing IEEE 802.3af PoE/802.3at PoE+. (The USA and US-8-60W do not support 802.3at PoE+).

Customers are mixed about the range of the computer input device accessory. Some mention it's an amazing wifi access point that extends WiFi coverage without having to pull another cable in the ceiling. However, others say that the range is very poor, about half a UAPACM access point and pales in comparison. The antenna coverage doesn't seem to be very good at the edges, and the signal seems more directional in nature.

The 4 lan ports off the bottom are a bonus for temporary hookups. Hosted a 5 person lan party, kicked off a guest wifi network for everyone's phones and plugged 3 of my 5 total computers into the lan ports. We used 400gb of data in 3 days, lots of Twitch streaming and latency intensive gaming (CSGO at a semi-pro level, it was my team that was laning) and this access point killed it. We had zero Internet related issues. The management is annoying that you have to basically run an application instead of it having it's own ip address but that's the ubiquity way for now. I do love the extra features that that process provides though, like if you had multiple devices, it's all 1 web portal. Obviously this is for the ultimate tech savvy person and I think it's perfect.
Range: this is anecdotal but seems to me the engenious eap1300 we deploy at work have more range but this product was going in my condo and I didn't want a big saucer on my ceiling. This is quite a bit smaller in size and sleeker. I only have a 1200 sqft condo and it covers my area well. Even into my garage through the concrete wall. But I have mine perfectly centered in my space. If I put it in the far corner and it has to beam through my kitchen and guest bathroom, I get 50 down as opposed to 300. But that is obvious since it has to pass through a mirror and my appliances. I don't think anything else would give much better results.
Not a fan that the injector is pretty much proprietary. 48v isn't normal. I didn't really search too hard for a generic one like a tp-link or something so it's possible I just missed it.
I think 5 starts is too much but 4 is too little. Probably a 9/10. I imagine that in a large house having 3+ of these would be awesome though.
Word of advice, if you aren't going to flush mount it to a low profile wall box, try to get a lower profile or right angle terminated patch for the back of the unit to allow for a tighter fit. A standard patch is going to stick straight off the back of the unit by about an inch. If you have a wall box you are mounting it over of standard depth, it'll fit nice and flush with a normal one.
4 stars for the following cons:
* you must use PoE from a switch, you cannot use an injector (so the documentation says)
* the signal seems more directional in nature and some devices closer to it are still connecting to the other AC Pro. I had to use the mapping tool and tune the output signal strength between the two devices to dial it in
* seems appropriate to mount low, based on the form factor, but the signal likely works better with it higher on a wall
