The install was straightforward for me as I already had the hole cut for the old heater. Martin included a "liner" which went inside the old hole. Then I put the new vent in. Its about the size of an older 8k btu vent. Nice. And I filled around the new venting with roxul. A stone based insulation capable of handling very hot temperatures (will not burn or melt). So I got a nice insulated bug/critter proof install.
The unit was very easy to hook up. I had a 3/8" mip to mip fitting on hand. Note: you will need this for any of these direct vent installs. The fitting on the heater and the hose will be female. Save some time. Pick one up at the hardware store before installing! You'll also need a flare fitting from the mip to the hose. I think that was included with my hose package as I already had it on there. But if you're doing this for the first time you'll want to check your fittings before installing.
I fitted with sealant goop on the Mip threads (but not on the flare fitting!) and away I went. No leaks. Took me 2 hours and 18 minutes. Complete from opening the box to cleaning up the box.
The heater has been running for two days. I ran the heater on max for a bit after giving it a day to break in. Just to burn off any manufacturing grease left over. It smelled a bit. But not as bad as the previous 3 I installed from another company.
I give this five stars. Easy to install. Safe to use. Neat window. 80% efficient. Modulating flame. This new generation of direct vent heaters has gotten pretty good.
Update: After my first winter with the Martin I am still giving it 5 stars. I thought the glass view port was a little goofy. But turns out I like being able to see how high the flame is. The unit ran flawlessly all winter. Seems to use less propane than my previous direct vent.
I was concerned about the enormous hole I had to cut in the wall (9 1/8") so I cut an inspection hole (4") before - good thing, there was a wire in the way. Had to move the heater up a bit to clear the wire. The "thimble" is a roll of sheet metal rolled tightly and when cut it sprung open - so be careful. I used an abrasive cut off saw to cut the flue and fresh air tubes to length, much easier than using snips. The manual has micro writing for the critical dimensions AND if you are not careful you can mix up your calculated lengths (they are based on the model BTU ). I lined out the other model lengths to keep from getting confused. The only thing that bothered me - not enough to change from 5 to 4 starts - is the thimble wall plates have MUCH larger than 4 1/2" holes in them for the flue to pass through. Probably almost 3/8" larger. So much so I had to go to McLendon Hardware to get some wood stove door seal rope and tie it around the flue (pushed into the thimble from the outside) so I had some backing for the silicone caulking. I did the same for the inside but no caulking there. Hope your experience is as good as mine. Cheers.

We transformed a small rv trailer into a kitchen, shower area and it is installed in that trailer. Keeps the rv very comfortable, 2 weeks now on the same 30lbs propane tank, Keep in mind that it has not been a cold winter so far for the South East part of Ontario. Average 0C to -10C at the moment.
Does the job well.
Once unpacked, I found it to be well boxes and protected for shipping.
-The instructions were great and the paper drill template came in handy to get all the holes lined up properly.
-The heater comes with all mounting hardware and accessories required for the install. (*minus the regulators and propane piping that the certified installer would supply)
-The initial start up /pilot took a bit of time to light, but it went and I let it heat up to Burn off all the oils from manifacturing.
- The heater is really cool and it has a great “set it and forget it” thermostat heat temp adjustment built in.
- I have given it a 4 on the “value”, as it is very expensive, *but the quality is there, so I can’t complain.
- I recommend this heater for the off grid application as there no power source required to run it.
- Also note that the heat delivered is a nice dry heat, unlike those propane ceramic heaters that leave everything humid and windows fogged up.
