"SUMPTUOUS WORLD BUILDING, WITTY CHARACTERS, SPICY ROMANCE...AMALIE HOWARD AT HER FINEST." –DANIELLE L. JENSEN, New York Times bestselling author of A Fate Inked in Blood

A bladesmith blessed by the stars. A prince with a dangerous secret. A god bound in shadows. From USA Today bestselling author Amalie Howard comes a scorching new romantasy that will leave you spellbound.

“His Imperial Majesty King Zarek requests your presence as his esteemed guest.”

When the gold-dusted court invitation arrives at Suraya Saab’s forge, she believes it’s a joke. Nobles might seek her skills as a bladesmith, but she has no qualifications as a potential bride for the crown prince. Still, the invitation is the chance at adventure, and the means to finally visit the capital city her late mother loved.

But what awaits her in Kaldari is nothing she could have imagined—and fraught with danger. It’s not the crown prince, but his impossibly handsome, illegitimate half-brother, Roshan, who captures her interest…and her ire. The invitation isn’t a quest to find a suitable bride, but a veiled hunt for the Starkeeper—a girl rumored to hold the magic of the stars in her blood. And across the city, unrest is brewing between the noble houses and the rebel militia.

When the rebels attack, Suraya and Roshan find themselves on the run, trying to deny their simmering attraction and the knowledge that Suraya herself might be the Starkeeper. But Roshan is guarding secrets of his own. And with no control over the power stirring within her, Suraya has drawn the attention of a dark god, an immortal whose interest might be the biggest threat of all.

Fast paced romantasy
This was incredible. Action packed, unique magic, spice, trials, and prophecy. This is a must-read for romantasy fans. Amalie has such a smooth writing style that had me captivated from the very beginning. The FMC is a spitfire which made for some top tier banter. The MMC is protective and has a spicy mouth that had me swooning. I loved the connection the two main characters had and I cannot wait to see where there story goes.

This book was incredible. I got so many vibes from this one. It’s starts with ‘The Bachelorette’ vibes and quickly starts to move into Basgiath territory lol

The crown prince is hosting a choosing of sorts to find his new bride. Women from every station and walk of life are invited to the capitol for a chance at winning the princes admiration and to become the future queen. A series of trials ensues and it quickly becomes a free for all and the girls will have to fight to survive, the trials and each other.
Out FMC is more than she appears though, coming from a lowly province, she doesn’t expect to have a chance at winning. Until she starts to realize that she’s quite different from the other girls and she possesses the very gift the prince is after.
The crown prince is not at all what she imagined he’d be, but neither is his illegitimate brother.
Our MMC is immediately drawn to our girl the second she emerges from her carriage at the palace. She thinks he’s a lowly gardener and gives him quite the attitude, which just makes him want her more.
This book walks us through the growth and development of our FMC and her gifts as she learns who and what she truly is. It takes us on a wild and dangerous journey through all the regions of the kingdom as she and our MMC risk their lives running from the palace and those who inhabit it. Along their journey though, they realize the protectiveness and warmth they both feel towards each other is more than just attraction. But how long can they run before the crown prince catches up to them? And can they survive all the dangers that await them on their journey? All while she’s learning how to control more than her magic, but her feelings as well.

*There is some spice in this book, it is open door and descriptive but very tastefully done! 🌶️🌶️/5!

The way that this book surprised me in the BEST possible way is just incredible. I was hooked from the get go - the world building, the characters, the development, and amazingly fast (but not too fast) pacing all had me on the edge of my seat with a racing heart. I truly felt the adrenaline in my veins and I was completely immersed.

Suraya Saab is a common girl - or so she thinks. The magic that she has in her veins is simply explosive. She is an incredible badass bladesmith, and I loved her from the very beginning. Her fierceness was admirable, and the love that she had for her people was so very incredible and inspiring.

The world building - oh my goodness, the mixture of Persian and Indian mythology was simply exquisite and so very well done. The secrets, the elements of magic, the journey, the characters... all so beautiful.

Roshan I was iffy on - the way he immediately locked onto her, the way he was so secretive, it all baffled me and I knew something was not quite right with him - wasn't entirely prepared for the actual twist of what it was though - WOW! The tension and banter between Suraya and him was top notch though, I could have enjoyed some more spice but that's a me thing, and has nothing to do with the book! The ending - oh my word, I was truly in the grips and was left wanting so much more - I can hardly wait for book 2!!

If you're looking for a diverse fantasy with secrets, soulmates, fate, and a prophecy you are going to want to check this one out!

The concept of the MFC’s magic was interesting and the story flowed well enough. The character’s had dimension to them but something felt a bit off…I could never identify well with the MFC. Even though she had a range of emotions, she seemed to be a bit “Pollyanna-ish”. There wasn’t enough substance to the emotions and feelings to make them believable. The story didn’t grip me so much that I could barely put it down but it did keep me reading to the end. The magic seemed a bit confusing and contradictory at times as well. And there was this pervasive sense that the author was trying to teach the reader what it meant to have good morals which I felt bordered on patronizing. I think the other big thing was the lack of any real spark between the MFC and MMC. I just couldn’t “feel” their attraction. It was a bit bland.

I’m a fan of Amalie Howard’s historical romances so I was very excited to get this new fantasy book, and I am glad to say I enjoyed it a lot. Once I got into it I didn’t want to stop reading. I found it interesting that the main plot in this book seems to be resolved, and it almost felt like it could be a standalone novel. However, there are just enough little questions left that I’m excited to see how this twists and turns to continue in into a series.
Suraya was a good FMC overall. She was a little naive and immature, but she was also strong and determined. I think she has a lot of potential to grow as the story continues. Roshan was a good love interest for her. He was attentive and able to take control of any situations that came up. I had the feeling from the start that he isn’t end game and I feel I’m correct after finishing the book, but I could be wrong and it wouldn’t be a bad thing. I’m most interested to see more of Darrius in the following books. I think he could present a really good enemies to lovers plot if it goes the way I think.

This book just leaves you with such a satisfied feeling. Telling you why is good and all but it's just a good book!

Suraya is such a relatable character with honest banter and reactions. Admittedly, the MMC, Roshan, is a bit too golden retriever for my taste but the revelations at the end and the romance in the middle offsets it enough for me to still enjoy his character. Starlight Heir had me scheming the WHOLE time trying to figure out what the bonds are, what this magic is, how is this going to end. But, lets be honest...the God of Night has me more than intrigued. I cannot wait for the second book just for him.

    2 qualms:
Way too obvious foreshadowing. Suraya is an strong, intelligent FMC and to have her dismissing what are very clear signs of what's to come is irritating at best.
There could've been more in depth building of the houses and their political motivations. This would have reinforced why Suraya couldn't find a way to support the Dahaka. It felt a little disjointed in this section of the novel as well as in her relationships as a result.

I was easily swayed to pre-order and read this book.   Between my book friends reviews and the cover I was sold. Once I picked it up I couldn't put it down.  Devoured over the weekend, I was thrown into an amazing world filled with Persian and Indian mythology.  I loved the world building and wished I had a whole compendium exploring the history of her gods and magic.
I appreciated that the characters were 25yrs and older, skilled and strong despite the obstacles and lifelong secrets.
There was so much light hearted banter.
I enjoyed the use of modern language mixed in, made me laugh.
Looking forward to reading more in this world.
