- Reviewed in the United States on August 31, 2023Great photographers and images, most of which I never knew existed—a terrific addition to my photography library.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2024This is a beautifully designed and produced book, with hundreds of outstanding photos that would be extremely difficult to find anywhere else, if at all. That alone is more than enough reason to purchase it.
But the book goes far beyond that. It serves as a kind of photographic history of Japan, seen through the lens of the photo magazine in all its permutations. The book includes many wonderful essays and articles, most translated (to my knowledge) for the first time. It is also a fascinating history of the magazine form itself, and its relation to photobooks and prints as a method of disseminating photographic work. And that is only scratching the surface, it offers much more on many levels.
Get it now while it’s still in print, it’s sure to be a collector’s item in the future.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2024Amazing detail - generous number of photos in this history book, this tome. It’s a workout to hold and a mental challenge also to absorb this epic story. Japanese photography geeks will love it.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2023Fabulous resource, fabulous design, fabulous research—Japanese Photography Magazines is a thrill and delight to hold and look through. Enormous thanks for this beautiful and comprehensive book!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2023One of the most difficult aspects of the history of Japanese photography is that its context was largely closed to foreign audiences. The various historical and cultural backgrounds that were self-evident to Japanese photographers and photography critics were never explained to foreign audiences, and thus Japanese photography was only understood in terms such as "Zen," which is a highly stereotypical Orientalist prejudice. This book is one of the very few books that discusses in great detail the development of photographic expression in Japan and its uniqueness through the evolution of photographic magazines, based on the manners of a Western historical perspective and the data it contains. It is sure to become one of the most important resources for researchers outside Japan in the future.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2023This is more than a history of photography in Japan told through the rise and fall of the photo magazine - it is also the story of an art and a technology and a country. And of course it is likely to be the most important document about the magazines themselves that is ever produced. The book is physically gorgeous: beautifully laid out with stunning full color pictures on almost every page. The authors have managed to take a fairly specialized subject and make it fascinating, even to someone like me who is no expert on photography, without in any way dumbing down the material. A really impressive and important achievement.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2023I was genuinely impressed by "Japanese Photography Magazines: 1880s to 1980s". This particular book stands out not only because it feature impressive photography, it also delves into the evolution of photography in Japan and situates each magazine story within its historical period. It's like a condensed history lesson within a photography book.
In short, "Japanese Photography Magazines: 1880s to 1980s" is a treasure trove of Japanese photography and a must-have for any fan or researcher. This is a truly exceptional piece that effortlessly conveys valuable insights while showcasing stunning visuals.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2024Over time I've become more and more interested in Japanese photography - this is a welcome resource, serious, but beautiful and rewarding to read.
