Rancid flavor, no returns allowed

I purchased these ground chia seeds thinking that they would be more convenient than soaking or grinding them myself each morning. On the plus side, the seeds are ground into a fine powder, but they have a rancid (sour) flavor when adding them to my smoothie. At first I thought it was something else that I put in my smoothie, but after trying it for 5-6 mornings and changing out other ingredients, it became obvious that it was the chia powder. I had accidentally purchased an extra bag when I meant to only purchase one. I thought I would take the hit on the bag I opened, but return the unopened one, but they don't take returns.
Part of this is my fault as I should have known that omega-3 fatty acids are very fragile and prone to oxidation with heat and exposure to air. The seeds are protected before they are ground, but become rancid quickly after being ground up. I'm going back to the whole chia seeds.

After reading reviews of many ground chia brands, I was worried about the amount of time these products may spend in warehouses that may not be climate controlled. Many reviewers noted a rancid taste in several brands.

Made certain to buy from a retailer that accepts returns. Needn't have worried as taste is great. Love the 16oz size. The "best by" date is Jan 26, 26.

Regardless of the best by date, chia can still turn rancid if left long in a too warm environment. A search of the Amazon help page returned a message saying that ground chia doesn't need refrigeration. There are quite a few reviewers who would disagree with that. Just make sure you are choosing a seller that accepts returns.
