About the author
International speaker and violinist Diane Allen is a TEDx/TED speaker, and thought leader who speaks on increasing the meaning, joy, and fulfillment in one’s work and life by accessing the flow state. Years before neuroscientists discovered the positive impact the flow state has on achieving peak performance, Diane had already experienced the power of flow in her own career as a violinist. It was her unique approach to getting into flow, on demand, that landed her a spot on the TEDxNaperville stage as well as features on TED, ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, Associated Press, Boston Herald, Authority Magazine, and Thrive Global. Diane was the concertmaster of the Central Oregon Symphony for 15 years, a beloved violin teacher for 28 years, and author of the Fingerboard Workbook series for violin, viola, cello, and bass.
Diane is extremely proud of her husband, John, who is also a musician, and her son Scott, who is a pilot. Both exemplify what it’s like to live a meaningful life at the intersection of flow, passion, and purpose.
Today, the author of Flow: Unlock Your Genius, Love What You Do is known for her experiential keynotes, training, and coaching programs that go Beyond Engagement™ featuring her three-step Flow Strategy™ system which empowers people to get into their flow state, be in their genius, and love what they do.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2024I've been languishing lately. Going through motions but knowing full well I wasn't accomplishing anything and I sure wasn't fulfilled. In other words, no flow was happening here!
I remembered having seen Diane Allen speak a few years ago and I felt like a flow state refresher was just what I needed. The rumor mill was that she had written a book, so I came looking for it and sure enough, here it is.
This book is exactly what I needed! It's an easy read, yet not necessarily a quick read.
The good news is you, if you're familiar with the concept of flow, you don't need to read the chapters in order.
After skimming the first couple of chapters to refresh my memory, I focused on the chapters "Discover Your Flow Strategy" and "Igniting Flow". I work independently and needed guidance to get back into the rhythm of putting myself into my flow state. The exercise in "Igniting Flow" is truly eye-opening and with the gained awareness I'm better able to objectively evaluate my work. I'm also reminded that flow only comes when you leave your comfort zone so no wonder I've been languishing. I've been super comfortable lately.
(If you aren't familiar with Diane's work, I encourage you to read the chapters I skimmed. I only skimmed them because I was already familiar with Diane's work.)
- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2024I recently had the pleasure of reading Flow: Unlock Your Genius, Love What You Do by Diane Allen cover to cover, and it was nothing short of transformative! As someone who loves personal development, I found Diane’s approach to the flow state both fascinating and highly actionable. From the very first chapter, I was hooked by her ability to blend science, positive psychology, and real-world stories in a way that’s easy to digest and even easier to apply in my own life. The steps she outlines for getting into flow on demand were game-changers for me, helping me perform at a higher level and love what I do even more.
What made this experience even more special was having the opportunity to interview Diane on my podcast. Her passion for helping others tap into their genius was palpable, and I was blown away by the depth of her knowledge. Diane’s stories, particularly about her journey as a violinist, made the concept of flow feel personal and attainable. Whether you're a professional looking to elevate your career or someone simply wanting more joy in life, Flow provides the tools to make it happen, all while being an enjoyable and inspiring read.
If you’re looking for a book that combines inspiration with actionable insights, this is it! Diane’s Flow isn’t just about achieving success—it’s about going beyond it. She helps you discover what makes you tick, and how to consistently live in that sweet spot of creativity and productivity. I can’t recommend this book enough, especially if you're ready to take your work and life to the next level. Grab your copy today—you won’t be disappointed!

Images in this review - Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2024I enjoyed learning about the neuroscience behind the sate of flow and how our heart energy impacts those around us.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2024Diane Allen has given us clear instructions on how to access the best of ourselves. Her passion and commitment to convey this to others exemplifies her own Flow. Her thoughts are clear, her examples accessible, and you can feel her urging us forward to our individual access to this state of presence, and being in the moment. I downloaded this book, but think I will get a paperback copy to leaf through and return to the exercises. You should, too!!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2024This book is an easy read that makes big ideas simple, accessible and actionable. I learned that I can intentionally get into a state of flow that helps me focus and be productive. Now I can easily recognize when I'm in a flow state, and I feel that I'm combining creativity and innovation. I liked the model that intersects Purpose, Skill and Challenge, and the idea that finding a sweet spot helps you access your flow state. I've shared this idea with my art students, and inspired by this book, made flow our theme for the semester. This book will inspire you to figure out your own access to the flow state, and ultimately how that connects with your purpose.
