How to launch a new product and achieve product-market fit without being overwhelmed.

This book is a comprehensive guide to your go-to-market strategy.

GTM Strategist is an actionable step-by-step handbook packed with tactics and strategies from 54 leading go-to-market (GTM) experts, from companies such as: Hubspot, Miro, Figma, Metabase, CXL, and many more.

The book guides you to answer questions like:

  • Who am I selling to?
  • What price should I set?
  • What marketing channels should I focus on?
  • What growth techniques will take us there?

In Growth and Marketing, we were taught how the “big tech” companies grew to their heights more than a decade ago. They had bigger budgets, teams, and global talent. Markets were less saturated. Customers were more excited about innovation.

What worked for these giants ten years ago is unlikely to make you the next unicorn in the 2020s.

We need a different, modern playbook for GTM. One that applies to bootstrapped startups, clever leaders in tech companies, and independent innovators.

So I went on a journey. I devoted a year of my life to interviewing more than 50 experts who shared their “go-to-market” secrets. They provide actionable advice that guides you to product-market fit, complemented by my own decade of experience working with high-profile unicorns and enterprises such as Google, Rocket Internet, Bayer, and Heineken, along with more than 350 startups.

Inside this book, you'll find:

  • The most well-researched step-by-step guide that walks you through every element you need to start profitably selling your products: from market research to pricing, positioning, and beyond.
  • 135 mental models and 17 workshop templates that will help you and your team build a winning GTM strategy.
  • A heap of practical examples and advice by growth experts from these leading companies: Amplitude, Miro, Hubspot, Figma, MongoDB, The Predictive Index, CXL, Foreo, Zebra BI, and many others.

By the end of the book, you'll:

  • Have a proven step-by-step GTM strategy that will make your next launch a whopping success.
  • Get hands-on experience from stellar GTM experts and apply them to your company.
  • Make decisions with confidence using field-tested frameworks and mental models.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book is a must-read for any founder who doesn't want to take the long, meandering road to finding product-market fit." - Wes Bush, CEO and Founder of ProductLed, and author of the bestselling book Product-Led Growth: How to Build a Product That Sells Itself.

"Maja's book is the best guide that I've seen for getting to product-market fit, and without PMF, sustainable growth is impossible." -Sean Ellis coined the term "growth hacking" and is considered the founder of the worldwide growth hacking movement. He is the author of the international bestseller Hacking Growth.

"She preaches and teaches what matters most: focus and simplicity. Too many founders get lost in ill-fitting frameworks, growth initiatives, or unlimited TAMs that simply don't work for them. Maja Voje helps correct this course with a subset of hand-picked and battle-tested frameworks created just for pre-PMF or bootstrapped companies, accompanied by critical information on when to apply which." -Dr. Else van der Berg, Product Expert at Value Rebels

"This is such a well structured and accessible guide to go-to-market strategy! Maja eloquently breaks down the often complicated science of GTM and unpacks it in a way that makes it truly actionable for everyone involved in launching new products, from bootstrapped startups to large enterprises. Yes, you'll find a ton of frameworks and supporting templates, but they're communicated so clearly and supported by many real world examples that you won't need a science degree to understand them and put them into action. It's all packaged around a 6-step strategy canvas that just makes sense. Pragmatic GTM for everyone." - Ben Williams, PLGeek

"Go-to-market strategy and finding product-market fit tends to be a "black box", especially for founders. Maja's approach of tapping into experts across the dimensions of GTM aims to remove the uncertainty of what good GTM strategy looks like — and makes this book a must read for founders, marketings, and product teams." - Robert Kaminski, Partner at Fletch, Product Marketing expert

From the Author

I spent 11 years working in growth and marketing across the spectrum of high-profile unicorns and enterprises such as Google, Rocket Internet, Bayer, and Heineken, to scaleups and over 350 startups. Throughout my journey, I learned one crucial lesson: growth advice that works great for the 'big tech' does not necessarily translate into companies that are trying to find their place in the sun. So, I went ahead and rewrote the GTM marketing and growth science to embrace these nuances and find answers and progression for companies that are tackling more unknowns than knowns. They need logical and firm guidance on how to make decisions with confidence to win in their GTM efforts.

I'm a founder who also mentors other founders to build financially strong startup plans and have had my share of frustrations nailing down critical parts of startups' strategy, my own as well as those I mentor. The go-to-market strategy is probably one of the most misunderstood and wasted parts of any pitch that I have seen.

But the problem is that unless you're deeply embedded in the traditional Silicon Valley ecosystem, it's hard, almost impossible, to figure out the core elements of a rigorous, data-driven go-to-market strategy that you can manage as a solo founder AND ensure it meets the objective rigor test.

I found Maja Voje's Go To Market Strategist (GTMS) book after a great deal of fruitless searching and dissatisfaction with many of the other books in this category - many were good but incomplete, or complete but fairly superficial, worse, complete, deep and totally not practical for a solo founder without a lot of funding or a big team.

GTMS is probably the single best book I have come across in this genre. It starts from the basics and walks you through every critical aspect of your startup's GTM strategy. I did every single exercise laid out in the book and after a chapter or so, became quite familiar with the flow and logic of the book.

Maja lays it out in a few key modules - first explaining the what's, the why's and the how's of each building block. The references and bibliography in particular I found to be excellent. She also includes very practical step-by-step instructions for every part of your GTM strategy. There are also workarounds in case your well is running dry on some aspect of the GTM strategy - e.g. you don't have data, or your position isn't particularly unique for positioning.

It was intense, took me about a week of very hard work, but for the first time, I actually had a complete GTM strategy in a spreadsheet - something I've not been able to accomplish with any other book I have tested this way so far on this topic.

Because the logic is so step-by-step, it's very easy for you as a founder to revisit prior answers and steps and refine them as you learn more and iterate on key elements.

The biggest pluses of this book:
- Very action oriented, no fluff, no nonsense - only includes what you need to get the job done as quickly and effectively as you can
- Highly data-driven - I love this!
- Friendly, accessible explanation of even difficult concepts - doesn't scare the non marketing savvy founder away

There's a heavy tilt towards Saas and tech businesses but I didn't find that to detract from the value or the relevance of the framework, the content or the exercises.

In short, this book is absolutely packed with value and I think it easily achieves the author's self-declared "One Metric That Matters" - the number of insights per page. I used different colored highlights on my Kindle copy and this is probably the one book that is almost completely covered in highlights!

If you're an early stage solo founder especially one who's not easily able to access traditional startup resources available to the best tech startups in the valley, this is your ticket to developing a terrific and actionable GTM strategy with the means you have at hand right now - and then have it grow with you in detail, precision and sophistication.

In just under 60 days, our SaaS welcomed over 600 free users and 30 paid subscribers. According to Userpilot, “[f]or many [SaaS] companies, the ideal freemium conversion rate is around 2-5%.”

Maja Voje and her insightful book, "Go-To Market Strategist," were instrumental in refining our Ideal Customer Profile (ICP) and Go-To Market (GTM) strategy.

Based on the Beachhead strategy, we decided to focus our product, Flou, a SaaS solution for legal and music contract management, on music entrepreneurs (managers, lawyers, labels and publishers).

Our traction channel is our music business community and online educational platform called Seed Academy. We used our community (email + IG + YouTube) to drive traffic to our new software.

Thank you, Maja, for sharing your expertise!

First of all - thank you for putting this together and out in the world. I haven't finished the book yet, but I'm already able to put it to good use in a project I have on my plate right now.

To anyone wondering - this is a highly actionable book that goes through the GTM motion step by step, including the fine details that are often skipped. I also enjoy that it's in a logical sequence, meaning that if you have a job to do, you can read this along and immediately apply things.

Just get a copy if you are a founder or marketer in an early stage company.

Go-To Market Strategist by Maja Voje is an amazing book for anyone who wants to understand growth strategies and product market fit. She rightly deserves her reputation as one of the top 1% professionals in the field of growth, and this book is a testament to it.

This field guide distils fifteen years of practical experience across different industries into highly practical resource – Go-To-Market Strategist. The unique trait of this book is its unwavering dedication to offering readers a solid no-cutting corners path to success in fierce business environment.

What I loved about Maja's book is its great organization and formatting. As a reader who frequently highlights key points and takeaways, I really appreciated the thought and effort she put into structuring the content. Maja has essentially done the heavy lifting for us, making it incredibly easy to navigate and digest, I finished it in an afternoon by the pool (and normally I don't read very fast).

But what truly sets "Go-To-Market Strategist" apart is its focus on delivering a comprehensive, step-by-step process that can be plugged into any business. This is not a book filled with vague theories or abstract concepts; it's a practical guide that empowers entrepreneurs and professionals alike with actionable strategies and tactics to drive growth and achieve product-market fit.

In conclusion, I REALLY recommend "Go-To-Market Strategist" to anyone seeking a reliable roadmap to success in the world of business. Her experience, dedication to detail, and commitment to providing a comprehensive framework make this book an invaluable resource for those looking to excel in their entrepreneurial endeavors. Whether you're just starting out or looking to refine your existing strategies, this book should be mandatory in any company or business school that is serious about growth.
