As for the radios, they perform reasonably well, although they can suffer from desense in a high-RF environment from what I understand. This means that if there's a lot of radio interference, these radios may not be able to "hear" incoming signals very well. Where I use them, primarily outdoors and away from the city, they work well for me.
There are several features I like about these radios. Not only are they programmed for the standard GMRS and FRS channels 1-22, but they also have programming for GMRS repeater frequencies, and allow for multiple DIY repeater configurations to be programmed. This means that if you regularly use two or more repeaters on the same frequency pair, but with different CTCSS tones, you can have each of them programmed independently.
Another feature I like is the "Sync" mode, which allows you to see both the channel name and frequency on screen at the same time. This won't be needed by a lot of users, but for those that use channel names, it's nice to be able to see the frequency too.
While I haven't tested the power output, it's rated at 5 watts on high power. Other reports I've seen suggest the actual output is pretty close to what it's rated. My experience with these radios is that they are on par with other 5W radios.
I believe these radios are a step above any of the "bubble pack" or "blister pack" radios you can buy on Amazon or in the big box stores. First, the quality seems much better, and the output power is higher than many of those radios. Second, these radios are infinitely more configurable, and can be used with GMRS repeaters, which few, if any, bubble pack radios can do.
One thing to keep in mind about bubble pack radios are the wildly exaggerated claims of 10 miles or more of range. The only way to get the kind of range advertised is from mountaintop to mountaintop in very remote areas where there is no other radio interference to speak of. These radios will perform as well or better than any of the bubble pack radios, but don't expect a long range except in the best of conditions. They generally work well where there is a clear line of sight between the radios, or minimal obstructions. Over a small hill, they may work okay, but over a big hill, they almost certainly will not.
For GMRS users that want decent short range performance, and may want the ability to use repeaters, I would recommend these radios. I generally recommend them over bubble pack radios for most users. About the only time I'd recommend bubble pack radios is if they will be used only for short range communications where kids are involved.
There are a couple of minor issues that I want to mention also. First, the belt clip feels flimsy to me. While I haven't had one fail, there are belt clips for other radios that feel much more substantial. Another issue is that the belt clip attaches to the battery, and not the radio body, and only two belt clips were included (but there are four batteries).
I have ordered extra GT-3 belt clips to put on these radios (batteries), as the GT-3 belt clip feels much stronger, and is a little longer, allowing it to be clipped to wider belts than what the TD-H5 belt clip allows. The GT-3 belt clip attaches the same way that the stock one does, so no modifications are needed.
Another minor issue is the flap that covers the speaker/mic jacks on the radio opens from the top, and sticks out when a speaker/mic (or programming cable) is plugged in. I believe there are pictures of this on another review on this site. For me it's not a big deal, but it would be nice if it opened from the side instead, so it wouldn't stick out as far.
There are some questions about the antennas on these radios. They are held in place with a set screw, and cannot be removed until the set screw is loosened. The fixed antenna requirement is for FRS radios, not GMRS radios, even though both services use most of the same frequencies and can cross-communicate. GMRS radios can be used with upgraded antennas, and these radios provide for that. If upgrading the antenna, you'll want one that has an SMA male connector so it will attach to these radios. Please note that this is different from the "standard" Baofeng UV-5R type of antenna that has an SMA female connector.
The last thing I will mention is that these are true GMRS radios, and not FRS radios, so a GMRS license is required to legally transmit with them. Obtaining a GMRS license from the FCC is not terribly difficult (although the website is a little tricky), and not terribly expensive. The FCC license covers the user and the user's immediate family, which is broadly defined by the FCC to include several generations in one family.
The radios come pre-programmed for GMRS and FRS frequencies, as well as the GMRS repeater pairs. When read the radio in the software (have to download it), you will see the frequency fields are greyed out. That's because you can't modify the transmit frequencies, because these are GMRS radios with the shared FRS frequencies and by regulation, they can't be modified. That's also why the antenna isn't removable (although you can undo the small fixing screw at the base of the antenna and then remove it, in case it breaks - I guess the screw is a workaround for the non-removable requirement). You can, however, in the additional memory slots program receive only frequencies.
I really wish the radio software would allow you to re-program or re-arrange the channel order, even if it only allowed you to program GMRS/FRS frequencies. The way these radios are programmed doesn't line up with the channel order/frequency order of my other radios, although they do line up with the Pofung version of this radio. With that said, I've made things work by re-naming channels (memory slots) in the software, and attaching a label to the battery with a typed "crosswalk) as to what memory slot in this radio corresponds to the channels on my other radios.
$80 for two radios, four batteries, two remote speaker microphones and the programming cable is amazing. The audio is loud, the transmit is very clean, the range is on par with other handheld radios I have, and they feel solid. They aren't waterproof or even water resistant, so keep them out of the rain - that is one of the things that keeps them from being five stars. Radios will be used in outdoor activities, hiking, etc., and it will eventually rain on them. Just keep that in mind and keep them dry.
The batteries charging via USB-C is a great improvement over needing a charging base. They are still compatible with charging bases though. They work with the Pofung P15UV base, and from what I can tell, they are the same radio save for a small cosmetic difference on the speaker grill. It also appears to be the same radio as the Radioddity GM-30. I've even programmed them with each other's software and uploaded codeplugs from each radio to the other radio without a problem.
If you're looking for what is a very similar radio without the GMRS/FRS frequency only limitation, look at the TYT TH-UV88 or the Retevis RT85.
Another think keeping these from being 5 stars is the battery. They are on the smaller capacity side, but you do get two per radio. I'd like to see the batteries be at least 2,200mAh, with 3,000 or more being ideal, even if it adds a bit to the size and weight of the radio. As it is, I was able to go 8 hours on a charge with about 12-14 minutes of transmit time on high power and about the same on receive before the battery went down to 7.1 volts. The battery only charges up to 8.1 volts, which I find interesting since most others I have charge up to 8.3 or 8.4 volts. Could be a calibration error so a lower voltage is displayed, but who knows (other than the manufacturer).
You get two belt clips, which is disappointing since the clips attach to the batteries, so you'll always have one battery without a clip, unless you buy extras. The screw heads to attach the belt clips are easy to strip, so be careful and use the right sized screwdriver.
A bunch of the other stuff the radios can can be found in the description (such as WX receive, dual channel "watch" (which I really like as a way of quickly switching between simplex and repeater frequencies), they are easy to use and program (if you've programmed radios before) and again, are an amazing value for what you get.
Now, everyone's question is always about how far they will talk to each other. That's a question that can't really be answered because where you use them will determine the range. Indoors, urban, suburban or in flat, wide open spaces will all give different talk distance, as will elevation. You can be at the top of a mountain with a clear view of a city 20 miles away and talk to another one of these radios with no problem (true of any radio, and why repeaters are placed at elevation). You can also be in a city and only get 1/4 mile. Just have realistic expectations of things and you'll be pleased.
I'll close with a couple of things about the programming software - if it isn't working for you, make sure you run the software in administrator mode in Windows. Also, if the software won't connect to the radio, make sure you have selected the right COM port. Yes, I had to figure that out the hard way (but not too hard). Just hope this helps someone. Also, the seller is very responsive to emails, even on the weekend. I received a response 12-14 hours after sending my initial email, and responses to my follow up questions within a few hours. Oh, and get a GMRS license - $70 for 10 years, but it also covers your family, keeps you legal and will allow you to request access and many times be granted access to your local shared GMRS repeaters (yes, they're out there in many areas, you just have to do some research).
I have since looked a little deeper into GMRS radios of this style, and have concluded that these are probably related to, or a replication of, Baofeng radios. I have watched YouTube videos about Baofengs, and their menu system is basically identical to these.
You can turn off the voice, but you should know that by default, there is a lady's voice with a thick Asian accent narrating every keypad button push. She's speaking English, however. I think it's fun, but I've read other reviews where people mention that they disable it. Baofeng radios, from what I've seen in videos, have a lady with an American accent.
In range testing, I've been able to communicate 1 mile away within town. I had to get out of my car, but my wife was inside our house and we could talk from that far away.
