- Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2025Keenagers is an easy read and is thought provoking. Dr. Auman reimagines life after “initial” retirement in uplifting and positive ways. This needs to be discussed as adults begin to redefine and reinvent themselves. Society itself needs to switch their attitudes and perceptions of what stages older adult experience. I consider it a must read for adults 40 and over.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2023A great book that brings attention to the deep seeded ageism in our society. I appreciate the real stories woven throughout the book that show we’re all just people at different stages of life with much to offer at every stage. I especially appreciate the conversation about our broken healthcare system, as well as the the lack of support in the workplace for those who are doing the very difficult and loving job of caring for aging parents at home. A great read that I highly recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2023Rather than tell us how to age in Keenagers, Dr. Auman shares Keenager stories so we can experience for ourselves the lives of “senior citizens” in today’s world and understand why we are desperate for a new aging stories. Active, vibrant, engaged seniors are not the exception to the rule, as stories in the media often portray. Instead, Auman provides role models for productive and fulfilling lives, no matter one’s age. She enables us to see that retiring to rocking chairs is merely a myth, a destructive one, at that, and pushes us to think as carefully about our life goals as seniors as we would about our careers in our twenties. We need to tell our own stories as we age, and Auman offers plenty of assistance to write dynamic ones. An excellent book for anyone thinking of aging!

- Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2024What pops into your head when you hear the word “old”? We have been programmed since early life to have a set picture of what it means to be old. Society has changed, but notions about aging have not kept up!
In her 2023 book, titled Keenagers: Telling a New Story about Aging, author Corinne Auman, PhD, asserts that we need a new narrative about aging. Old ways of thinking about aging and its associated stereotypes create real barriers to those who want to remain active, vibrant, and socially engaged well into their later life. Auman tells us, “Until we can change our views about our own aging, as well as the views of our friends, neighbors, and families, the big goals can’t be accomplished.”
What are the big goals? We need to change our mindset about aging. Through her own research, as well as that of others, Auman offers new ideas on how to prepare for, and experience, aging. In a simple, plain language style, she conveys personal stories of lived experience, research results, examples of public policy and programs, and more to walk the reader through ways to update our thinking about aging. She highlights serious issues and barriers and presents ways to overcome them.
Anyone who wants to live their best life, whether young or old, should read this book. Those who have a deep understanding of these topics have an opportunity to effect change, on a personal and societal level. Isn’t it time?
- Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2023In the 2004 film Mean Girls, one of the characters tries throughout the movie to coin a new slang term, “fetch.” Despite her best efforts, ‘fetch’ doesn’t happen.
It’s really tough to coin a new word that actually gets used. There are several problems along the way. First, there must be a need for the word. If the word can easily be defined by another single word, there probably isn’t a huge need for it. (“Fetch” is easy to define as “nice,” “fresh,” or “cool.”) The second problem with creating a new word is that it must be easy to remember, or sticky. If the word is too unusual, doesn’t make sense, doesn’t roll off the tongue, or feels weird to drop into conversation, people just aren’t going to use it.
As I was reading Keenagers, I was struck by how competently and effectively Dr. Corinne Auman gives us a new word that we didn’t realize we needed. It’s a word that can’t be defined by a single other word, because up until this book, we didn’t really have a word in our society for the folks beyond middle age who are still active, healthy, and thriving. Now we do. The word is also very sticky, easy to remember and easy to use. At one point in the book, Auman tells the story of a woman in her nineties who didn’t want to move to a retirement community because she didn’t want to “live with all those old people.” I found myself thinking, “Oh, just tell her she’s moving in with keenagers, and she’ll be good!” At that point, only 60% of the way through the book, I realized that Dr. Auman had created and explained a new word in such a way that my brain was already completely on-board with it.
This book is delightfully easy to read, but also tremendously informative. I found myself setting it down to text my dad the information about one of the service providers Auman mentions in the book. The book is also incredibly motivating. I found myself wishing there was a workbook or appendix of worksheets in the back so I could actively start my own planning. This is truly a book for anyone in the process of aging... or with any plans to age at some point.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2023I believe that this is an important book. (Even my mother agreed that it was a very good read despite the fact that I am quoted as a respectable source!) Written by Dr. Corinne Auman, it is backed by solid research, and is one of the best discussion starters on how our culture needs to shift its views on what it means to age. Love or hate the term “Keenager”… ok, but that’s not the point. It is a prompt for us to address the fact that clumping 60 to 110+ year olds into one category of “older adult” doesn’t make sense, and we need to talk across a range of venues locally and nationally about what does make sense. Let’s start the conversation! - Bob Cain, VP - Marketing, Piedmont Home Care (Winston-Salem, NC)
