Instead of fleeing from temptation as the Scriptures later exhort us to do, Eve flirted with it. She had everything a person could want in life, but she stood there and allowed her mind to meditate on the one thing she did not have until it became an obsession with her and brought God’s wonderful gift to them to a very cold and abrupt halt.
Yet, God still loved them, and through them, and their future pain, mankind still had the hope of salvation. The author does a wonderful job of creating in our mind this perfect heaven that is Eden, as we grasp what was indeed God’s plan for man and woman, that perfect union of physical intimacy that is like that deep honor and commitment we have to our God. Even as the story details the hardships that befall Adam and Eve as they make their way into a sinful world, discovering the joy and pain that humankind is capable of experiencing through the author’s skilled words, I feel blessed to know God’ love.
Fallen isn't just a riveting love story of the first two humans, it's a look into the very nature of our relationship with God, putting a wonderfully deft perspective on a story we've heard time and again.
I'm speechless.
Fallen shows you a glimpse of Creation, the lives of Adam and Eve, before the Fall and their lives after the Fall. It is spectacular how the author is able to show us how much God loves and adores us. She also shows the reader how beautiful sex is between the husband and wife and that God designed it that way. No, there are no graphic sex scenes so don't panic.
This story allows us to see that our separation from God by our disobedience also disconnects us in some way from our spouses. Eve's disobedience was like committing adultery. It caused discord and sin to come into our marital relationships. The story shows how disobedience causes so much destruction that it makes you sad.
When Adam and Eve are cast out of the Garden of Eden you can feel all their emotions, it is like you are there with them. You realize how much their sin cost them and us. But, there is so much wisdom and love (God's love) that permeates throughout the book until it is overwhelming. So I'm definitely speechless because there are no words that I can write in this review that are adequate enough to express how excellent, magnificent, awesome and amazing this story was to read.
How could anything ever go wrong? Understatement, right? What if you were Adam or Eve? What would be your thoughts or actions? What about a force of evil that was tempting you? What do you do after you give in to the temptation and are ultimately evicted from this place and are cast into a totally new (and not better) life. What has happened to God? You haven't heard from Him. Did he stay behind in Eden? How can you survive without His care? Which one of you really caused this problem? Can you ever love and fully trust each other as you did in the beginning?
These questions are but a few of the problems our 'Fallen" couple must face.
They really messed it up for the rest of us, didn't they? Put yourself in their shoes. What would we have done and was all of this in God's plan from the beginning?
From the first page I was hooked! Melinda captured the creation events perfectly, from Adam and Eves original names, to the description of the garden, to the Fall itself and what happened afterward, went way beyond my expectations.
I could go on and on but seriously,I have just finished the sequel "Refuge" (which was actually written first but chose to wait to read Fallen prior to Refuge), and am going to reread it again.
If you want a more in depth view of what happened "In the beginning" then read Genesis in the Bible, then read Fallen and Refuge. You won't be disappointed. The author fills in the blanks beautifully and most importantly follows scripture.
As a bonus, following the final pages, she added group discussion questions that are thought provoking and will be used well in a group setting. Am thinking of starting a woman's summer discussion using these books.
