After more than four decades in the food world, award-winning chef, celebrated author, food writer, and international restaurant consultant Rozanne Gold turns her formidable creativity to poetry with her first published collection, Mother Sauce. Mother Sauce refers to the five classic sauces created by chef Auguste Escoffier, and their subsequent "daughter sauces" that form the basis of all French cuisine. This metaphor weaves through these "spare and deceptively simple" poems, which like the minimalist style of cooking for which Gold is famous, "resound with unexpected complexity that tease the senses and excavate bliss," notes poet Barbara Schwartz. This memoir in poems, a bildungsroman, follows the writer as she moves from an unhappy childhood in Fresh Meadows, Queens, to finding nourishment through relationships with men, to becoming a chef and food writer in order to nourish herself, and finally, an end-of-life doula to deal with her grief after her mother's death. Trading the language of food for the language of words, the poems reveal a search for spiritual nourishment, including the upheaval of becoming a mother at age 53, and the sanctity of caring for dying people. The poems are a quiet reclamation of the divine and the feminine - giving rise to "a city of women," of "women carrying women home," and ultimately about God as both cook and mother...the ultimate source of sustenance. Reflecting on her life and career, both glamorous and gritty, Gold delves deep into experiences of feeling unworthy; taken from, not celebrated, known and yet not. Through Gold's poetry, food and cooking become a vehicle for artistic expression, a source of sensual pleasure, and an opportunity for self-reflection.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book was created by a singular poet--death doula, legendary chef, geographer of women's souls--who writes with a memorable voice. Gold's spare version of magical realism leaves no syllable unturned. Deft, wise, and delicate, the poems of Mother Sauce are powerful recipes for wisdom and compassion. - Annie Finch, Author of Spells and A Poet's Craft.

"With a chef's touch, Rozanne Gold's debut chapbook exquisitely gathers memory, loss, and boundless love into a shimmering bouquet garni. Gold is at once and by turns our guide, our charge, and our doula, leading us through grief and love, states of being--arranged together through the sensorial necessity of food. With a keen eye for lush detail and an epic sweep, Gold offers process,
where a recipe holds the future, where we grow memories older than water. Step into this kitchen. There is nourishment here. - Robert Balun, author of Acid Western and Traces.

Rozanne Gold, a pioneer in the food world, is an award-winning chef, author, journalist, and philanthropist known for her storied career. At 24, she was first chef to New York Mayor Ed Koch, and became consulting chef to the legendary Rainbow Room and Windows on the World. A four-time recipient of the prestigious James Beard Award, Ms. Gold is the author of thirteen acclaimed cookbooks, 600 articles about food and cooking, and was the entertaining columnist for Bon Appetit for five years. She has written and produced stories for the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Gourmet Magazine, and Huffington Post, among others. A graduate of Tufts University with an MFA in poetry from the New School, she is a Board Director of Brooklyn Poets, and a finalist for the 2020 Sappho Poetry Prize.

As Chef-Director of the renowned consulting group Baum & Whiteman, Ms. Gold has anticipated, and advocated for, culinary change and has created many of the industry’s most enduring trends, from “culinary minimalism” to “cocktails and little meals”. She has cooked for President Carter, Prime Minister Menachem Begin, Brigadier General Wilma Vaught, supervised dinner for 5000 for the Women in Military Service for America War Memorial, and was one of “Four Women Chefs for Peace” on a mission to Israel. After Hurricane Sandy, Ms. Gold established a pop-up kitchen in Brooklyn delivering 185,000 meals for those-in-need, and after Hurricane Maria helped rebuild the Zen Monastery in Puerto Rico. When Gourmet magazine closed its doors, Ms. Gold purchased their library and donated it to New York University.

An impassioned end-of-life doula, she is a former Trustee of the New York Zen Center for Contemplative Care, and co-founder of the “Death & Living Project.” Her podcast," One Woman Kitchen,” features the inspiring stories of the food world's most notable women. With hundreds of appearances on national television and public radio, Ms. Gold teaches the “Language of Food” at the New School, and has just published her first collection of poetry called Mother Sauce, published December 2022 by Dancing Girl Press. A graduate of Tufts University with honors in psychology and education, she studied cooking in Italy and France, and has an MFA in poetry from the New School. She is past President of Les Dames d'Escoffier, New York, and is Board Director of Brooklyn Poets. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband, the international restaurant consultant, Michael Whiteman.

I had always known Rozanne Gold's wonderful work as an author who could bring simple food to life and infuse her dishes with passion for her craft. She now takes that same commitment to conveying a message, but this time not through food, but through her poetry. It spoke to me on many levels and I found myself re-reading lines over and over and each time discovering a new meaning. If Rozanne's food has fed your soul, these words will feed your heart. Keep it by your bedside or with your cookbooks, it'll be at home in either place

Rozanne Gold has created a mesmerizing collection of poems that are, at turns, provocative, passionate, wistful, uplifting and searingly painful. Her use of imagery and mythology is evocative; her voice is accentuated by her distinctive punctuation (or the lack thereof) and the layout of her words on the page. The book takes the reader on a spiritual journey as daughter, lover, doula, and mother. The pages overflow with insight and sublime resonance. "Mother Sauce" is truly nourishment for the soul.

As someone who has been following the work of Rozanne Gold for many years, I purchased this book for my mother but ended up reading and re-reading it and then ordering it for others. In Mother Sauce, Gold serves up a multi-course narrative using impassioned prose that truly makes the reader feel the emotion while devouring each beautifully crafted line. Highly recommend!

This is a book full of poignant and meaningful poetry...about the feminine divine, motherhood, loss, grief and memory. The poem "Kitchen Work' is worth the price alone!
