I Look To The Mourning Sky: A Book of Poems and Writing Prompts for the Grieving Heart is a collection of poems for anyone who has experienced the immensity of loss. Its poems are written through the first year of grief and they seek to acknowledge the pain and complexity of this journey, which can be so isolating and overwhelming. While grief is a lifelong experience, it is something that is constantly changing and evolving. Its landscape is unpredictable and unrelenting. I Look to the Mourning Sky is a collection that seeks to meet people in the storms of their sadness and remind them that they aren’t alone. Also included are twelve writing prompts centered around grief and processing. Whether your grief is fresh or you can’t imagine a time you weren’t carrying it, these poems and prompts are written with the goal of giving you a safe space to feel the ups and downs of loss and to heal in your own way at your own pace. Whether you are an avid writer or can’t remember the last time you ever put pen to paper, these prompts are designed for you: to write your story, to share your story, to make sense of the things you don’t say aloud. The love you still have for who and what you've lost is so deeply important. The chapters of their love and the pages of memories are yours to keep. Your grief, their story, and how it's helped you write yours: it matters. It all matters. I hope this helps you on your journey.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Elizabeth's collection of poems is dynamically rich in artistry and also carries a sense of gentleness in delivery. Her words so beautifully and intentionally take you on an intimate journey hand in hand, all while navigating the complexity of grief and all of the layers that come with it. If you're in a season of navigating grief or have neglected the importance of healthily walking that long road, I Look to the Mourning Sky is such a helpful and creative book to help you process and refix your gaze."- Gloria Umanah, spoken word artist and founder of "The Hope Booth"

"
I Look to the Mourning Sky is both deeply personal and deeply universal—a rare combination that leaves you both astonished (someone else feels this way?!) and comforted (I'm not the only one!). Liz doesn't shy away from sorrow, but instead points a flashlight at the darkest parts, offering profound and lyrical language to the heartache of loss. This raw collection is dripping with compassion and grace. A beautiful read for anyone in the midst of grief, and also anyone supporting a loved one through grief." -Ashlee Gadd, founder of Coffee + Crumbs

"Liz Newman walks through the landscape of bereavement and, with an honest voice,
touches every sorrow held within our human hearts.
I Look To The Mourning
Sky
examines grief through a poignant collection of poems written by a soul who
compassionately recognizes the many faces of our suffering and finds unexpected
meaning. These poems will guide you through a personal process of accessing tangible
memories, soothing painful triggers, and listening for invisible prayers still living long
after loss. Liz masterfully paints a realistic, yet eloquent portrait of our grief and how
actively mourning allows us to honor that which we loved so dearly. You will treasure
this book of poems." -
Susan Frybort, author of Look To The Clearing, Open Passages, and Hope is a Traveler

The poetry here is not so poetic that you can’t get it, it is gritty, real, touching imagery, helpful expressions. And the writing prompts are powerful if exercised. Highly recommend for hurting hearts.

In her poetry book, I Look to the Mourning Sky, Liz stunningly captures the grieving process. The roller coaster of emotions that one experiences during the healing process after losing a loved one is evident in this book. Liz pours out her heart with raw encouragement for anyone walking this journey. The poems that fill these pages will offer comfort and reassurance that you are not alone in your grief. It's as though Liz is reaching out her hand and providing a shoulder to lean on.

I Look to the Mourning Sky is an eclectic poetry book. The poems vary in length and structure. There is also a variation in the weight of the themes presented. Some of the poems feel like a conversation between her and her dad. Some are written as reminders to herself, and still, others feel like a conversation between her and the reader.

Each poem is beautifully written. Each poem reflects Liz's heart. Each poem is a magnificent tribute to her late father.

The special bond Liz shared with her dad is evident in this book. In one of the poems, she writes,
"everyone who knows me
will know you too."
Through reading this book, not only have I gotten to know Liz, but I've also gotten to know her dad. She's a beautiful reflection of him.

I Look to the Mourning Sky also provides poetry and journaling prompts to help process your own grief.

This book has genuinely been written from the heart.

After I lost my mom, I couldn’t make sense of anything, least of all my feelings. I would cry one moment, feel ok the next, only to return to crying. These poems speak to your healing heart, helping to understand that however you move through the stages of grief is completely normal. Liz’s words speak to my broken heart and help comfort it. Highly recommend this book for the grieving, no matter what stage you are in ❤️

Salient, lyrical, and unapologetically candid in her exploration of not only Grief, but its parents and siblings. While the common thread of a handful of smaller pieces may have been brought together under a single title, each does well on its own, so hats off to giving them a soft and simple voice rather than chance losing any in the choir of compilation.
Nicely done.

I’ve been fortunate to not experience traumatic loss in my life thus far, so I’ve struggled with how to support anyone around me during those difficult times. I know I can’t fully understand the depth of their pain and loss and often that’s made me feel helpless when loss strikes… until I was introduced to this book. Liz has found a way to capture those raw, vulnerable moments that she experienced in her own loss to show others that they aren’t alone. To feel heard and seen. To provide hope in healing. I’ve given a copy of “I Look to the Mourning Sky” to 3 friends and family members who have lost someone dear to them and I know it’ll provide the comfort that I could never give. Thank you Liz for sharing your journey with us.

I came across her book on tik tok. I lost my brother in law this past week. While I am no stranger to grief, having lost my dad a few years ago and a close cousin a decade ago; i am constantly battling my grief. I love poetry and this book was nothing short of my expectations. It truly put into words all the emotions I’ve felt and are feeling again. I wish I had this when I was navigating my grief with my dad. This will be a book I look to when I need to be reminded that I am not alone in my grief or in need of a comforting message to myself on my hardest days.

I bought this book after reading some of Liz Newman’s work on social media. I lost my mum some months ago and I was looking for some comforting words to help me through the difficult days.

It’s a very good book and what I have been reading has certainly helped me.

A comforting book of poetry for the grieving heart. This collection of poems reminds us that we are not alone in our grief, even when it feels like we are sailing through an immense sea of sadness.

I, personally, have found so much comfort in Liz's beautiful poems. A gentle reminder that "grief has no timeline. It is not linear." Everyone's grief journey is different, as we each learn to navigate through life after loss.
