The Hebrew word for “vanity” is difficult to translate into English because it has multiple meanings. One of the most appropriate translations for the word is “vapor” or “smoke” like the kind that comes from a pipe or cigar. It signifies something that has no true substance and is usually foul or poisonous. As quickly as it appears it disappears. Throughout the book of Ecclesiastes, it seems as if the writer was saying that, when you really think about it, life is like smoke. It has no real substance or form or understanding, and it really does not amount to much.

What students of the Bible can learn from the full context of Ecclesiastes is that life is a journey that will have its ups and downs. Sometimes those downs will last a longer time than we would like. But that does not mean that we should lose hope. In the end, God is aware and active and intervenes in the lives of God’s children. The writer of Ecclesiastes would likely say that, ultimately, the point of life is not to always get our way and avoid discomfort. The point is to continue to build a closer relationship with God, regardless of what your life looks like. This is what is pleasing to God.
