About the author

Gene Siciliano is an author, consultant, speaker and executive coach. He uses his Fortune 500 background in finance to help business managers master the financial tools to turn their companies around from the bottom line up.
A former CPA, Gene has over 30 years of financial and operations management experience, having held top financial management positions with Computer Sciences Corporation, Epson America and several smaller companies. As a business consultant, he has acted as Chief Financial Officer for nearly a hundred publicly traded and privately owned companies – earning him the title of Your CFO for Rent!(R)
And when it comes to relating complex financial ideas in plain English, Gene literally wrote the book on it. (Several actually.) Published in 2003, Finance for Non-Financial Managers (McGraw-Hill), has become a best selling industry standard. It shows managers, CEOs, and business owners how to: create more cash flow, generate more profits, and generally feel more comfortable using financial data. It has been used in classroom instruction all the way from California to Curacao.
Gene’s straightforward approach to finance is also translated to non managerial lifestyles as evidenced by the newly released Financial Mastery for the Career Teacher (Corwin Press), a guide for teaching professionals wanting to learn how to create a full life and a satisfying retirement on a moderate salary.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2017I teach a course on business and finance, and it's for master's level students in public relations. I've used this textbook for several years in both the face-to-face classroom setting and online, and it's been outstanding in both venues! Every semester, students rave about the textbook; the adjective, awesome, has come up a number of times! One student told his friends and coworkers about Finance for Nonfinancial Managers; he described the book's approachability and ease of understanding -- and said "there is literally a waiting list to borrow it from me after the class!"
Gene Siciliano breaks down complicated concepts into bite-size chunks. Students who were totally intimidated about business and finance at the beginning of the semester said they felt comfortable and confident by the end. This textbook is a perfect guide for this class, but I really it's relevant to anyone, from the college student to anyone in the workforce who wants to build their financial IQ. I'd give the book a six-star rating (but only five are allowed!)
- Reviewed in the United States on March 14, 2015Very easy to read common sense approach to understanding finance.
Gene's approach hits the mark and can provide valuable insight for people that are not normally immersed in the financial world.
I would recommend this book to both people that understand finance and those that do not, during my read I found myself several times thinking " WOW that part was a great refresher" and I am someone that has been involved in finance and had P&L responsibility for several companies.
This book is a great ongoing resource for everyone!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2019Great for understanding finacial terminology especially if you are in the business world. Easy to read and it provides you with examples that are relatable. Increased by understanding and vocabulary
- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2016Interesting book.. for the price it is a good to have! It gave me some reminders on basic finance / accounting.. I work in a financial related field but not as a financial expert so it was a good way to understand some basic principle. Very nice. For the price, you can't really go wrong.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2022Like the name suggests, must have for entrepreneurs
- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2021I've found several grammar and punctuation mistakes and that drives me absolutely crazy. Also there is an unnecessary amount of analogies that go on for pages. If you have any experience with finances, this book is going to be incredibly frustrating as it explains things in such an odd way. This was a required book for a course I'm taking in my graduate program, but since I took 3 accounting courses and one financial management course in undergrad, this book doesn't help me much.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2019This book is easy to read and understand and full of good business practice tips. One of the best books for non-financial managers that I've read. I would highly recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2015This book has been very informative, I would recommend it for anyone how wants a good understanding the how and why of finance. If you are looking for detailed accounting and higher levels of accounting techniques this is NOT the book for you.
