About the Author

Michelle Denogean has worn many hats in her career but few know that her first ambitious hat had "Writer" written across it.While she has made herself known as a marketing guru and sought-after strategist in the business world, she spent her early years writing short stories and poems.Born and raised in West Hills, California, Michelle kept busy with school, dance, and writing. In the summer, she worked in her father's accounting business, but she had zero desire to lead in business. However, Michelle received her Bachelor's degree in Communications, with a Minor in Literature Writing, UC San Diego. It was there that she began to understand the intricacies of business. With the advent of the highly accessible internet, Michelle saw kids starting businesses out of their garages and people investing millions in them. Because "business is business," she knew they would need someone to pick up the inevitable pieces. That led her to Pepperdine University, earning her MBA.Entering the business sector, Michelle oversaw divisions of Fastclick and Edmunds. Over the past fifteen years, she has held the role of Chief Marketing Officer for Edmunds, Roadster, and currently, Side. She also served in leadership positions at eHarmony and Move.com. Her hard work has paid off. To her delight, in 2023, Michelle received the coveted Icon Award for Top Marketer of the Year.A few years ago, Michelle got passionate about helping more than just the company she served. Her inability to stay in the marketing box and her passion for asking provocative questions made her the perfect resource for anyone looking to take their start-up to the next level. But she realized she could reach out to many more start-up founders with books. With three in the works, she has now added the hat "Author" to the others.Michelle resides in Newhall, California with her husband, son in high school, and middle-school age daughter. They are avid skiers, snowboarders, and off-roaders. She says her children believe that CMO stands for "Chief Mommy Officer."

As a seasoned HR leader, I've often been drawn to resources that identify personality/leadership/communication “styles” or “types” and how understanding oneself and others fuels successful results. Michelle Denogean's "GrowUp" is a refreshing and invaluable addition offering practical insights that resonate deeply with the challenges faced by today’s leaders.

What sets "GrowUp" apart is its blend of strategies and real-world applicability. The author’s background in marketing shines through in her ability to communicate complex concepts in an accessible, engaging manner. This book isn't just about individual growth; it's about elevating entire organizations.

One of the most valuable aspects of "GrowUp" is the emphasis on the importance of diverse personality styles (Superpowers) within leadership teams, particularly for startups aiming to scale. The book convincingly argues that having a balance of these styles is crucial for a startup's growth and success. These insights can help with assessing team composition and strategic hiring decisions to ensure start-ups have the right mix of capabilities to drive the company forward.

Furthermore, the discussion on recognizing and addressing blind spots as a leader is particularly enlightening. The book provides practical exercises to help leaders identify their own blind spots and those of their team members. This focus on self-awareness and continuous improvement can be transformative for a leadership team and critical for company success.

As an HR professional, I appreciate how the book addresses both individual growth and team dynamics. The exercises and reflection questions at the end of each chapter are particularly useful in leadership development.

I highly recommend "GrowUp" to HR professionals, leadership teams, and board members. It's more than a book - it's a valuable tool for transforming individuals and organizations, especially those in the startup ecosystem looking to scale and succeed in today's competitive landscape.

Michelle masterfully breaks down the different personality types essential for growing a successful company, offering deep insights into team dynamics and leadership. What makes this book stand out are the real-life examples and actionable steps she provides—this isn't just theory, it's practical advice that can be applied immediately.

Whether you're an aspiring entrepreneur or already managing a team, this book will help you assess your strengths and weaknesses and ensure you have the right people in place to support your vision. It's a fantastic resource, full of wisdom, and it’s clear that Michelle knows her stuff. I highly recommend it to anyone serious about building a business that thrives.

While this book targets leaders of start-up businesses, it can also apply to leadership in churches, non-profits, public agencies, or any organization that wants to get better. As someone who is always looking to devour great books on leadership, I’m happy to have found another one.
I spent a career in leadership in public schools but also have experience on a church board, a hospital board, a public utility district, a small medical device start-up company, and two nonprofit boards.
Michelle writes with a wealth of experience and a style that is filled with joy and hope for the reader's success in their journey. She articulates the concept of building a complimentary leadership team better than any I’ve seen. And she does not shy from talking about the “hard stuff” that involves potentially painful introspection by the reader. The multiple meanings of the title capture much of the book’s essence: to GROW your startup business UP, you have to grow up personally to get through barriers that could cause you to be among the 90% who don’t make it.
    This is a delightful read.

Michelle Denogean’s book GrowUp is an easy read with smart, insightful and provocative information. Many of the other business and management books I’ve read are so different. Quite frankly, they’re boring. Nothing about this book is boring. Michelle writes practical and penetrating information. It is provocative in a way that really makes you stop in your tracks and think about yourself. What you do, what you’ve done, what you could have done better. I love how Michelle captured the four superpowers necessary for founders to be successful and to scale their business as they grow. How founders must surround themselves with a team that possess the superpowers the founder does not have. Especially of interest to me was Michelle’s chapter on blind spots. We all have them! A truly wonderful read.
