Editorial Reviews
Review
“Better than anything I’ve read, this book puts the immoral issues you’re curious and concerned about in the big-picture context of our chaotic culture. With every chapter you read, you’ll understand more about why this matters. You will believe you were ‘created for such a time as this’ as you read. And you’ll know what to do with the passion that bubbles up within you because of the practical action
steps and many truths in these pages.” -- Kathy Koch, PhD, founder of Celebrate Kids, Inc.
“I am thrilled to see this practical and yet timely book to help students navigate the toughest issues today with biblical wisdom.
This is an indispensable guide for any young person who wants to know how to think and live Christianly in this generation.” -- Sean McDowell, PhD, professor, speaker, author
“A Student’s Guide to Culture is the most important book your young Christians will read this year. It’s packed with biblical truth and insight on topics young believers contemplate on a daily basis. John Stonestreet and Brett Kunkle address the most critical issues of culture, helping students to understand why they should care, what they are facing, and how they can navigate the culture in a way that honors God and reflects a Christian worldview. If you’re a parent, pastor, or youth volunteer, get this book for your students.” -- J. Warner Wallace, cold-case detective, author
“If there was ever a time in history when students needed a practical guide to help them navigate the ideas that shape their culture it’s now. And no one is better equipped to prepare them than Brett Kunkle and John Stonestreet. A Student’s Guide to Culture is an important resource to help our kids live out a vibrant faith in a post-Christian world.” -- Alisa Childers, author, speaker, and former CCM artist

This book only covers extremely shallow topics of faith and Christian living; all topics that have already been addressed with any kid/adult that goes to church, youth group, church camp, or even just pays attention to the way that the Church feels about life in general in the media. From my quick read-through, I learned no new information, nor did I see anything that my group would find to be particularly insightful that we didn't cover in one or two lessons' time when they were in middle school--it is all opinions/musings that would have been covered with a free lesson I could have (and did at one time) found easily on the internet somewhere for free.
Not only this, but it is clear that this book was written with some very antiquated, whitewashed, one-dimensional views on Christian life and what it looks like. the musings on some very heavy and important topics such as homosexuality and gender identity are simply brushed over and HEAVILY influenced by culture rather than what the Bible truly says. To sum up on these particular topics: "There are two genders, men and women are created for each other, no one is born gay and homosexuals should be loved but not accepted wholly because they're living in sin, homosexuals aren't likely to live Christian lifestyles because they're probably not monogamous (outdated data), and gays should either change or be celibate."
I usually don't leave reviews that are so cut-and-dry, as I am easily impressed. This book and its student guide are appalling to me; they are so shallow that they, in my opinion, insult the intelligence and capabilities of the students they were created for. They don't go deep into issues, ignoring the deep cultural implications of the "culture says" aspects and neglecting to delve deeper into the biblical apologetics essentially saying "Our interpretation of the Bible is fact so listen to us." No syntax studies, no comparisons of different interpretations, historical implications of scripture, nothing.
I wasted my personal money on this book. Thank the good Lord. it wasn't the Church's dollars I spent.
