"This useful and well-researched book offers a persuasive and spiritually enriching reading of the messages to the seven churches in Revelation 2-3. Weima first carefully sets each message within its first-century Roman context and then produces clear, engaging sermons on these ancient messages. The result is a model for the preparation and delivery of accurate and applicable expository sermons on any biblical passage. This book is not only a fascinating and compelling guide to Revelation 2-3 but a helpful textbook on expository preaching."
--Frank Thielman, Beeson Divinity School
"With his trademark care and judiciousness, Weima offers a particularly useful interpretive guide to the seven sermons of Revelation 2-3. He provides engaging historical detail but also presents inviting contemporary sermon models based on the sermons of Revelation. A great companion for teachers and pastors."
--L. Ann Jervis, Wycliffe College, University of Toronto
"An excellently detailed analysis of the seven sermons in Revelation 2-3, which Weima clearly demonstrates are not letters. He is right on target in saying that these sermons are exercises in truth-telling not in foretelling. Highly recommended."
--Ben Witherington III, Asbury Theological Seminary
"With precision and potency, Weima provides an insightful corrective for some misunderstandings of Jesus's sermons to the seven churches in Asia Minor. This is one of the most comprehensive and helpful resources on Revelation 2 and 3, equipping preachers to interpret, communicate, and apply Jesus's timeless instructions for modern listeners."
--Matthew D. Kim, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary
"Weima explains the truth of the gospel and assists pastors in their task of preaching the word of God. This is the best commentary on the messages to the seven churches in Revelation 2-3 written in a long time."
--Eckhard J. Schnabel, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary

This book helped me, and continues to help me, worship, cherish, and passionately serve my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!
This is a must read for believers and nonbelievers!
Weima takes an interesting view that the messages to the churches are more sermons than letters. Each chapter starts off with a thorough and detailed commentary, followed by "The Contemporary Significance," which is essentially a sermon on this section.
One thing I like is that when there is a difference of opinion, he states each major opinion with their strengths and weaknesses before dealing with what he considers the strongest option. One case is with the Nicolatians, where he points out that there is so little written about them (only mentions in Scripture are in Revelation 2; only mentions in church history goes back to Revelation as opposed to an active group) that we cannot make a dogmatic interpretation.
I highly recommend this book if you're studying chapters 2 and 3 of Revelation.
With each one of the seven churches Professor Weima first does a careful exegetical study of the passage and reviews some of the best scholarship pertaining to the particular message, er... sermon. Like many commentators before him, he recognizes and emphasizes the importance of the historical situation of the Græco-Roman cities in which the seven churches were located. After walking the reader through his (very careful and thorough) research on a particular church and its municipality, Weima dons a pastoral cap (or perhaps, robe) and presents a model contemporary sermon based on his interpretive work.
For some lay people, Weima's knowledgable exegetical work will occasionally be difficult to understand. But the contemporary sermons that follow in each chapter (which are noticeably distinguished by a gray background) will be readily accessible and understandable... indeed, even interesting.
Although I personally have a few interpretive quibbles (such as his interpretation of the identity of the angels of the seven churches), in my estimation Professor Weima has provided the Church with an exemplary exegetical and pastoral model on how to approach chapters 2 and 3 of the Book or Revelation.
One benefit of this book is that Weima steers clear of (unnecessary) speculation which so often distracts the reader from the actual book of Revelation. Therefore, by the time you complete your reading of the book you willl know the sermons for what they were in their original setting and therefore how most authentically to apply them to a contemporary setting.
You will find, at the end, that Weima has one agenda -- to present the sermons of Revelation as clearly and authentically as possible. Many people seem to want to read Revelation as if it we're the report of a live-action football game -- one side pounding the other. It so often seems to be about the drama of the two competing teams. For Weima, the Revelation is more about the Christ calling his church to holy living. The victorious Christ coaching and challenging and correcting and chastening and comforting his church in a difficult world. At first you may not see the difference, but in the long run you have a much more solid Christ-centered basis for understanding these sermons and their universal relevance.
I am using Weima's scholarly work along with online videos and I feel I have an excellent mix of solid information from Weima and the affective value of the images (perhaps of the Temple to Artemis, for example) to give me a strong and balanced curriculum.
Strong approval for this book, especially suited for careful and thoughtful readers.
