Katrin's Chronicles: The Canon of Jacqueléne Dyanne, Vol. 1 Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 9 ratings

13-year-old, Katrin DuBois decides it's never to soon to start an autobiography. She needs to set the record straight about the outrageous rumors concerning certain adventures that began when she was in 6th grade. That's when her elder sister, 8th grader J. Dyanne, began exhibiting extraordinary detecting powers. Volume 1 begins in the late summer of 1968 on the south side of Chicago, a turbulent time before cell phones, laptops and text messages became essential elements of pre-teen life. The girls manage to thrive in a world of social change with multi-generational family support, creative quick-thinking and fearless inquisitiveness. The dog days of August find them prohibited by their parents from visiting the Central Library downtown because of the riots during the Democratic Convention. However, there's plenty of adventure in their own neighborhood as they become swept up in family mysteries, neighborhood political schemes and discovery of a surprising legacy of psychic, even supernatural, talent.

Growing up on Chicago’s South Side, reading was one of my favorite pastimes. It began with my Mom, who read to my siblings and me each night before bed. My elder sister was signed up to a children’s book club. With me being the youngest and sibling rivalry being what it is, I would have to sneak the books from their hiding place when my sister wasn’t looking! This may have had something to do with why I’ve become a storyteller.

My writing career began in the entertainment industry, first being awarded a Walt Disney Screenwriting Fellowship and following that up writing and producing for such network and cable dramas as Under One Roof, Touched By An Angel, Promised Land, Any Day Now and Soul Food.

But fiction, my first love, kept whispering in my ear. My novella I Believe… A Ghost Story for the Holidays, was published in November 2012 by BooksEndependent (www.BooksEndependent.com) and Something for Everyone (50 Original Monologues), offered by Samuel French, Inc. are available at Amazon.com.

Several years ago, I wrote a short story about a girl detective named Jacqueléne Dyanne. It was a birthday gift to the sister who used to hide her books from me. It is a highly fictionalized autobiography of our adventures in childhood. I wrote another one for Christmas, then on Mother’s Day and realized I was writing a novel. Katrin’s Chronicles: The Canon of Jacqueléne Dyanne, Vol. 1 to be released on Kindle August 15, 2013. (Visit my website at: www.vcwoods.com)

Ms Woods has achieved something quite unique! A young adult book for grown ups. I am reminded of my love of Nancy Drew, but the writing is not on a juvenile level, yet can still be enjoyed by young adults. I love Katrin. She is smart and sassy and funny and "ain't nobody's fool". The other characters are so well drawn they pop off the page to life. In so many ways Katrin and her family and friends (and enemies) are like any other of the sixties, yet Ms. Woods manages to give them a uniqueness that is special. I would love to know how much of Ms. Wood 's life experiences found their way into Katrins. Can't wait for # 2!

It just didn't hold my interest that well though it was a nice story line. A little slow. I didn't finish reading it.

My grand daughter likes strong girl detectives and I downloaded the book for her. She loved it and hopes there will be more. I asked her to tell me the plot and that took an hour of complicated stories. So I guess she really liked the book.

I liked this book for the most part. I liked the characters, especially Katrin and Jacquelene Dyanne. They were developed well. I thought their parents and grandmother could have been developed a little bit more. I thought Katrin had a good voice for the narrator. I loved that she used a lot of good vocabulary words, including some Latin phrases. I thought J. Dyanne was an interesting character. I really liked it when she used her deciphering skills to notice clues and put them together to find solutions. She's a bit like a young-girl Sherlock Holmes. However, I didn't really like it when it delved into the Wisdom cards, the voodoo, and the physic readings. I wish they had kept her as a great sleuth. Some parents may be uncomfortable with their children reading about those things. There isn't any profanity, violence, or "intimacy," but the subject matter is a little more difficult. I would recommend it for ages 5th-6th grade and up. You may read my full review on my book blog: the-readathon.blogspot.com.

    Cross-posted to Tween Book Blog:[...]
Why I picked it up: I was asked to review the book as part of a book blog tour and I gladly accepted.

Why I finished it: This book is a delightful blend of high mystery and southern gothic, combining Holmesian deductive prowess with the supernatural beliefs of tarot, voodoo, and psychic readings. Woods sets the tone for the book by providing the reader with a picture of a close knit family that fights for each other and looks out for each other. There are two older siblings that are also in the mix, but they don't play much of a role in the story. Katrin, much like Dr. Watson, hopes to one day become a doctor, and her chronicle is littered with her Latin practice, an element that helps to develop her character. Though the book is just as much about J. Dyanne as Katrin, J.Dyanne still remains a somewhat mysterious personage. She is possessed with a powerful gift of observation and the ability to see into the beyond, which becomes a valuable tool to aid in the recovery of lost animals, lost persons, and lost objects. J. Dyanne is seen as a witch and a seer, but neither of those assertions by her peers and neighbors seem to fit with what truly goes on behind the scenes. I loved that there was a historical element to the story as well: the 1960s was a period of racial and political unrest in this country, and in some cases exacerbated by the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., to which Katrin makes reference. These outside events also have an impact on the characters, causing them to think outside themselves and ponder how they fit into the bigger picture. This book is a must for fans of Sherlock Holmes or even just a good mystery that keeps you guessing until the last pages.

I loved all of Katrin’s and Jacquelene Dyanne’s mysterious adventures. There were many surprising parts in the book that I never would have guessed. I liked the action parts with Derek; in fact, he was my favorite character. The creepy parts in the graveyard in Mexico were a lot of fun to read. The part with Great Aunt Alis and her “niece” was scary, then funny, but the ending was gratifying.

Their names were very unique, and I liked that she called her two older siblings “the elder others.” I enjoyed Katrin’s vocabulary because I like learning new words, and it made the book more interesting to me. It was also pretty cool that J. Dyanne was a psychic.

I’m really excited for the next book of this great series.

If you want a couple of hours of pure joy and delight, then get yourself a copy of this wonderful book. I love the characters, the story, the setting. I've given three copies away as gifts -- and everyone loved it as much as I did.

When I finished reading this book, I found myself thinking, "Boy, I can't wait for the next book in the series!" Katrin's Chronicles is great fiction. Well written, thoughtful, and funny, it is a mystery about two sister detectives in Chicago in the 1960's. It was a great read for me, as well as for my 10 and 13 year old girls who found themselves immediately drawn into the characters and the situations and couldn't put the book down! I highly recommend Katrin's Chronicles!
