- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2023I got this book because my 5yr old son is learning Spanish and we loved the artist's work from another series (Stuntboy).
¡Vamos! is great. The plot itself is fine (your typical anthropomorphic animal helps anthropomorphic people around the town) but where it shines is the tremendous amount of Spanish vocabulary and the gorgeous and fun art.
Nearly every object you see will have the Spanish word for it nearby, much like a Richard Scarry book did in English. And the art is fun so you'll want to look through every picture anyways! Can't recommend this enough for any little ones wanting to learn Spanish.
Just a note for my fellow monolingual English speaking parents: there is a translation guide in the back. It doesn't cover the sheer volume of terms though so a Spanish-English dictionary is your friend. Google Translate can work in a pinch.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2019This is a book to read alone, to read together, to read in pairs, to read with someone who only speaks Spanish, or someone who only speaks English, the enjoyment and possibilities are endless and divine! Little Lobo runs a delivery service and we get to experience his day starting off with Lobo waking up to Kooky Dooky, the rooster's crow. From the very first page readers are invited to explore all of the intricate details of the Mexican town that Little Lobo calls home. The main plot follows Little Lobo's work day, but there is so much going on in subtle and overt ways in the illustrations that weave themselves with Lobo's thoughts and actions, that readers will be looking for clues to these parallel plots. Many readers might even want to write their own parallel stories! ¡Vamos! cannot be digested in one reading, and readers will find themselves returning to it and discovering new words, new stories, new details every time they open the cover. Raul The Third includes discreet labels for many objects within this picture-book-graphic-novel hybrid, exposing English readers to Spanish, including Spanish readers as active participants of the story, creating bridges between monolingual students where they can meet in the middle, read as a team, teach each other new words, and bond over this enriching reading experience. So many times I've browsed books with titles like "First 100 words in English" and put them back because they are just no fun, it's drill and kill, and what reader would want to return to that book over and over, and learn something from it? Raul The Third has created an engaging vehicle to acquire English and Spanish, without making readers feel different, without making them stand out because they are newcomers to the US, while providing them with comforting images and stories that will remind them of home and help them relate to others in their new journey.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2020Our son is bilingual, so I am always looking for books in English and Spanish. This book is just WOW! It has such a FUN story and the detailed illustrations are just amazing. Truly the best I've seen, and not only are they so true and dear to Mexican culture but heartwarming to Latin culture overall (we are a Caribbean Latin family). The author and illustrator did a magnificent job, and for my son - it was such a fun experience exploring the pages. Every time we thought we were ready to turn the page, we found a new delight! EXCEPTIONAL!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2019I didn't know what to expect when I picked up this book, I was expecting something simpler by the cover, but I'm in love with the old comics/cartoon style. there is a bit of mania in the pictures, and I feel like I sometimes get lost in the background characters or bits detail before I come back to Lobo, but it is wonderful. A book kids and adults can come back to again and again.
There are a lot of illustrators I look forward to every year, and Raúl the third is now one of them.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2019I’m an English speaking mom with zero background in Spanish so I thought this book would be great to do a little learning myself while I also read with my 3 year old daughter. Here’s an assessment:
• Nicely printed 42 page hardcover book. For those who appreciate the art of book production, the cover has spot gloss varnishing on the characters. A nice touch!
• The book is densely filled with illustrations, giving you plenty to discover each time you re-read the story. The illustrations have a sort of vintage, woodblock style quality with a Mexican flavor. While the drawings are definitely unique, I feel like I’ve seen the characters from the 1920s/1930s or so.
• I don’t see much of an association of this book with the Richard Scarry series, except that both are very robust with detailed illustrations.
• The storyline follows Little Lobo as he starts his day and makes deliveries around town. The copy is written mostly in English, but with Spanish words and phrases inserted here and there, or Spanish vocabulary integrated with the illustrations. As someone who has zero foundation in the Spanish language, I found it a little hard to follow the Spanish lines. I didn’t realize until after reading the story that there’s a glossary in the back. But when reading to a toddler it’s not easy to flip back and forth. It’s too bad they weren’t able to somehow put both on the same page, but perhaps that would ruin the flow of the book and add too many extra elements on the page.
• Overall this seems to be a good book for someone who already has a bit of a basis in the Spanish language. Or maybe for someone who speaks Spanish and is also practicing their English. With a little extra effort, those who do not know Spanish can still benefit from the story and learn plenty along the way.
