What Heals Us: An Age Gap Romance (Falls Creek Book 2) Kindle Edition
"Surely losing your virginity to a firefighter in a cabin getaway that was won at a fundraiser was against some fine-print bylaw in the town charter."
______________________
It all started with a list.
Ten resolutions for a new year, new me.
Or at least the me I thought I should be.
It was going all fine and dandy until I got snowed in with my friend’s brother.
Her much older brother. What happens in the cabin, stays in the cabin. Right?
Wrong.
When Austin Hale shows up on my doorstep, offering to help me with my list, I decide that I’d be crazy to say no. He’s new in town, and I’d rather not go on my journey of self-discovery alone.
We can do this as friends. Besides, he’s too old for me, and the two of us have enough baggage to fill an airplane.
Ten resolutions, and then we move on.
In my mind, the rules are clear. But my heart has plans of its own.

Austin Hale. Firefighter. Big Softie. Dirty Mouth. Say Less. While I did enjoy this book I was a little disappointed that the set up for this one made me think there was a bigger story going to happen which had my hopes super high. Even though it didn't happen I did still enjoy Caroline and Austin.
“𝑹𝒆𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒇𝒖𝒍𝒍𝒚, 𝑰’𝒅 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝒎𝒆 𝒃𝒂𝒄𝒌 𝒖𝒑𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒓𝒔 and... 𝒖𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒍 𝑰 𝒄𝒂𝒏’𝒕 𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒂𝒌."
Caroline likes to keep to herself and enjoy her newly found freedom after being under a microscope for so long due to her health. Austin, the older man, comes in and makes her enjoy life even more 😉 All Austin wants to do is fall in love and have someone love him back. You'll swoon so hard for this man.

I loved this story. I wish I could read it again for the first time.
Austin Hale is...whew. He is a sweet, firefighting, southern gentleman who can’t seem to stop falling for Caroline. He has always been stuck in the friend zone, but this time he is determined to stay out of it. He wants Caroline, and he wants to give her everything she’s missed out on. With a love language like acts of service and words of affirmation, there’s no way Caroline can stay away from him.
Caroline is such a gentle soul who has been through so much in her short 22 years. But she is determined to live her life to the fullest. She starts with making her list of resolutions which spirals into checking each one off with Austin by her side. She was shy and reserved when they first met, but I loved how her sassiness and courage came out as they got to know each other.
The side characters in this book add so much to the story. What I love about small town romances is yes they meddle, but it’s all because they truly care about each other. There is no shortage of support or a friendly push when needed. I cannot wait to read the rest of this series!
Austin was the absolute best hero. He knows what he wants from moment one, he is strong and steady and consistent and respectful and so so so dreamy.
Caroline is relatable and kind and loving and strong, and so deserving of a hero like Austin.

“Austin Hale was big. Enormous even. He was the size of a mountain, but moved with the precision, dexterity, and silence of a ninja. It was as if he had years of practice trying to make himself squeeze into a small world.”
“Sugar, I’m not your dad, but I can sure as hell be your daddy.”
“No. You shouldn’t have.” She turned her back to the sunrise and faced me. “Just because your pain is different than mine doesn’t make it any less valid. Life hurts. Things are never black and white. It’s not even shades of gray.”

Together they work on her list of fun things and fall in love, well in more love because they both have been crushing on each other since day 1 🥹
I absolutely loved the way he treated her, with his actions and words you could definitely tell he was daddy vibes. Every moment had me squealing.
Caroline was such a strong caring soul, she’s been through so much and yet she’s just an Angel. I’m so happy she got her happy after moment esp after reading the ending of the bonus scene 😉. I also adored Shane and finding out his past made me emotional. I can’t wait to read his happily ever after.
I loved that we got to see characters from previous books and series and I really, really loved reading Austin and Caroline’s love story.
This was such a special book and I enjoyed every minute of it. I can’t wait for the next book in this series 💕
I love small town romances where all the characters are invested in each other. They are all looking for one another. I have recently discovered Maggie Gates' writing and I love how she brings the elements of a small town to life. What Heals Us is book 2 in the Falls Creek series and follows Caroline and Austin.
Caroline, is the sweet shy elementary school teacher who has been sheltered most of her life because she was she was diagnosed with Lupus at an early age and a recipient of a kidney transplant. When she meets the town's latest firefighter there is something about him that she can't ignore.
They embark on an adventure that includes the ''list'' that Caroline set out for herself to embrace life and do things that she was unable to participate in when she was younger.
Caroline learns a lot about her self and gains a new found confidence that has remained dormant and is finally seeing the light of day thanks to Austin's caring and protective nature!
What a beautiful story of rediscovery and letting go and going after what you want. I would definitely recommend!!
