What Heals Us: An Age Gap Romance (Falls Creek Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 1,466 ratings

"Surely losing your virginity to a firefighter in a cabin getaway that was won at a fundraiser was against some fine-print bylaw in the town charter."
______________________

It all started with a list.

Ten resolutions for a new year, new me.

Or at least the me I thought I should be.

It was going all fine and dandy until I got snowed in with my friend’s brother.

Her much older brother. What happens in the cabin, stays in the cabin. Right?

Wrong.

When Austin Hale shows up on my doorstep, offering to help me with my list, I decide that I’d be crazy to say no. He’s new in town, and I’d rather not go on my journey of self-discovery alone.

We can do this as friends. Besides, he’s too old for me, and the two of us have enough baggage to fill an airplane.

Ten resolutions, and then we move on.

In my mind, the rules are clear. But my heart has plans of its own.

I absolutely plowed through this book like I did with What Hurts Us. I both want to make myself slow down with this series so I can savor it and am also full steam ahead. I absolutely adored Austin as our leading man and I loved the easiness of their relationship. It just felt like they fit naturally and worked even when they were fighting their feelings. For both Callum and Layla, and Austin and Caroline their chemistry and relationships just feel so natural and real. Like they’d actually be couples you’d meet in real life. I deeply enjoyed the moment of getting to see Layla and Callum in this book (I hate when you have interconnected stand-alone that make the previous books couple just totally irrelevant after their book ends)
Cannot recommend this series enough

What Heals Us - Maggie Gates

“𝑰 𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒎𝒂𝒌𝒆𝒔 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒅𝒆𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒆. 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒎𝒂𝒌𝒆𝒔 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒇𝒆𝒆𝒍 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖’𝒍𝒍 𝒅𝒊𝒆 𝒊𝒇 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒅𝒐𝒏’𝒕 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒊𝒕.”

Austin Hale. Firefighter. Big Softie. Dirty Mouth. Say Less. While I did enjoy this book I was a little disappointed that the set up for this one made me think there was a bigger story going to happen which had my hopes super high. Even though it didn't happen I did still enjoy Caroline and Austin.

“𝑹𝒆𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒇𝒖𝒍𝒍𝒚, 𝑰’𝒅 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝒎𝒆 𝒃𝒂𝒄𝒌 𝒖𝒑𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒓𝒔 and... 𝒖𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒍 𝑰 𝒄𝒂𝒏’𝒕 𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒂𝒌."

Caroline likes to keep to herself and enjoy her newly found freedom after being under a microscope for so long due to her health. Austin, the older man, comes in and makes her enjoy life even more 😉 All Austin wants to do is fall in love and have someone love him back. You'll swoon so hard for this man.

“𝑴𝒚 𝒇𝒂𝒗𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖’𝒓𝒆 𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒆.”

Alright who made the mistake of not telling me about this book before now??
I loved this story. I wish I could read it again for the first time.

Austin Hale is...whew. He is a sweet, firefighting, southern gentleman who can’t seem to stop falling for Caroline. He has always been stuck in the friend zone, but this time he is determined to stay out of it. He wants Caroline, and he wants to give her everything she’s missed out on. With a love language like acts of service and words of affirmation, there’s no way Caroline can stay away from him.
Caroline is such a gentle soul who has been through so much in her short 22 years. But she is determined to live her life to the fullest. She starts with making her list of resolutions which spirals into checking each one off with Austin by her side. She was shy and reserved when they first met, but I loved how her sassiness and courage came out as they got to know each other.

The side characters in this book add so much to the story. What I love about small town romances is yes they meddle, but it’s all because they truly care about each other. There is no shortage of support or a friendly push when needed. I cannot wait to read the rest of this series!

A super sweet book, really got me in my feels. The characters were both so loveable, I would reread this. The only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 is because I wanted a little more in the epilogue, without having to read the rest of the series. I loved the lupus representation, and how things were portrayed.

I loved every minute of this story. If you’ve read Maggie’s other books, this one is slightly on the lower end of the spice scale, it’s still plenty spicy… just sweeter overall, and very nurturing.
Austin was the absolute best hero. He knows what he wants from moment one, he is strong and steady and consistent and respectful and so so so dreamy.
Caroline is relatable and kind and loving and strong, and so deserving of a hero like Austin.

“Austin Hale was big. Enormous even. He was the size of a mountain, but moved with the precision, dexterity, and silence of a ninja. It was as if he had years of practice trying to make himself squeeze into a small world.”

“Sugar, I’m not your dad, but I can sure as hell be your daddy.”

“No. You shouldn’t have.” She turned her back to the sunrise and faced me. “Just because your pain is different than mine doesn’t make it any less valid. Life hurts. Things are never black and white. It’s not even shades of gray.”

Oh my! Maggie outdid herself with this one. I know I always say this one was the best yet everytime I read a book by Maggie but I mean it this time. this one is so far her best and I read it in record time for me: 2 days! Austin is every girls dreamy prince charming and Caroline is his Cinderella. this book is a good ol fashioned love story with spice to make you swoon or combust-you pick your poison. at the heart of this book is Caroline's list and Austin to help her check of her list in the process they get their happliy ever after. I could see how much this book meant to Maggie radiating from the pages. I also saw a little bit of caroline in me. she was real! not just a character from a book but she was real! you will truly enjoy this book from cover to finish. we get to catch up a bit with the falls creek residents and maybe a couple of beaufort one as well. Well done Maggie. well done.

This was adorable. Austin is the perfect slightly older book boyfriend. Only 13 years older than Caroline with a gap of 22 to 35. But he is so patient and caring. All he wants is to help her blossom and he happy in her own skin. Loved how they got together and all the scheming that went on. Haha so hilarious. Only got mildly annoying every time Caroline snapped at Austin for being protective. I get her frustrations over how she grew up. But her baggage with her parents isn’t ok to take out on him when he only cared. You worry about those you care about. And that’s how he showed his love by being there for those he cared for. Loved the ending!!

This book was so enjoyable. Austin is a much older fireman who constantly gets friend-zoned and Caroline is a young kindergarten teacher suffering from lupus and has no life.
Together they work on her list of fun things and fall in love, well in more love because they both have been crushing on each other since day 1 🥹
I absolutely loved the way he treated her, with his actions and words you could definitely tell he was daddy vibes. Every moment had me squealing.
Caroline was such a strong caring soul, she’s been through so much and yet she’s just an Angel. I’m so happy she got her happy after moment esp after reading the ending of the bonus scene 😉. I also adored Shane and finding out his past made me emotional. I can’t wait to read his happily ever after.

Don’t tiptoe through life. Make it messy. Make it loud. Take up space. Try something new.”

I love small town romances where all the characters are invested in each other. They are all looking for one another. I have recently discovered Maggie Gates' writing and I love how she brings the elements of a small town to life. What Heals Us is book 2 in the Falls Creek series and follows Caroline and Austin.
Caroline, is the sweet shy elementary school teacher who has been sheltered most of her life because she was she was diagnosed with Lupus at an early age and a recipient of a kidney transplant. When she meets the town's latest firefighter there is something about him that she can't ignore.
They embark on an adventure that includes the ''list'' that Caroline set out for herself to embrace life and do things that she was unable to participate in when she was younger.
Caroline learns a lot about her self and gains a new found confidence that has remained dormant and is finally seeing the light of day thanks to Austin's caring and protective nature!
What a beautiful story of rediscovery and letting go and going after what you want. I would definitely recommend!!

This was a wonderful story about two people who might not seem to be couple material, but both have insecurities and are looking for love. Austin is a firefighter, new to town and there to help his sister when he meets one of her much younger friends, Caroline. Caroline has health issues and has led a sheltered life. We see more of the fabulous Brandie Jean in this story which is a bonus.
