I read and loved all the non-fiction books that Kelly Flanagan wrote, and learned a lot from each and every one of them. I am also a fan of his blog. So finding "The Unhiding of Elijah Campbell" an amazing read - educating and enjoyable at the same time - came as no surprise to me. I couldn't wait for Dr. Kelly's first fiction book and as soon as I had it in my hands, I was not able to put it down.
Many scenes of the book make me think of my own experiences and I find myself analyzing and comparing, but mostly learning how to deal with my past that "will stay, always, within us."
Opening the book randomly, I can easily find a quote worth remembering. This is one of my favorites: "a way of pretending we aren't, all of us, always growing and evolving and learning. It's a way of insisting we should be finished when, in reality, all of us are always in process."

A page turner
I did and also did not want Eli to unravel the past. It all seemed too painful for him to bear. Each time he unraveled something, I wanted to cry, "That's enough." I wanted life to just leave him alone and exist in the world he had carved out for himself. All this nagging by others, telling people they need to open up, just seemed senseless, even selfish nagging, to me. BUT, I knew there was a purpose behind the author's writing, and, as much as I wanted the hard parts to end, I just as much could not wait to see how it all turned out for Eli. It is the first book in a while that I stayed up late to read, and recommend everyone read it. It has helped me understand how I have, without realizing it, limited myself because of past experiences, especially painful ones. I hope it will help you as well.

I've thoroughly enjoyed Kelly's other books and his inspiring blogs for years and this novel is clearly the epitome of his works to this point. This book is not Dr. Kelly telling you good things to help you help yourself but and engrossing tale that draws you into one man's life where you feel what he's feeling and discover yourself as he discovers himself. You won't stop reading until 2:30 in the morning on a work night as you look up with tears in your eyes feeling a sense of completion and gratitude for the hope that exists in the world. I highly recommend this book!
