Elijah Campbell is on the verge of losing his writing career, his faith, and his marriage when a recurring childhood nightmare drives him back to his hometown, Bradford's Ferry. There, his encounters with loved ones both past and present shed light on the reason his wife left him―and the meaning of his nightmare. However, beyond the light he begins to glimpse something even more terrifying―a decision he must make...to continue hiding the secrets of his past or unhide the only thing that can save his marriage: himself.
In psychologist Kelly Flanagan's non-fiction works (Loveable, True Companions), he drew from clinical insight to explore the spiritual depths of identity and relationships. Now, in this debut novel, he weaves a page-turning and plot-twisting tale that brings new life to those insights, along with fresh revelations about personal growth, spiritual transformation, and the dynamics of interpersonal relationships.
This visit to Bradford's Ferry will linger long after the final page has been turned, and a guide for group discussion invites further conversation about the story's themes of healing, grace, faith, forgiveness, and freedom.

Editorial Reviews
Review
"Tuesdays with Morrie meets The Shack in The Unhiding of Elijah Campbell. A pitch-perfect page-turner of a story about one man's dismantling and reconstruction as he collides with his past. Authentic, heart-rending, absorbing, and wise, this book hits the bull's-eye of psychological and spiritual relevance. I closed the cover with new clarity, new conviction and, I hope, new capability to forgive and love." -- Cheryl Grey Bostrom, author of Sugar Birds
"Stunning. Through eloquent prose and exquisite storytelling, Flanagan invites us into the unraveling of another's false self. Yet we enter not as strangers but as friends, caring deeply for the unhiding of Elijah, for the unhiding of us all. The scenes will linger with you, as will wise words to nourish the movement toward your true self. Recommended for all who seek to journey into the deep waters of their own transformation." -- Bethany Dearborn Hiser, director of Soul Care at Northwest Family Life and author of From Burned Out to Beloved: Soul Care for Wounded Healers
"A captivating story illustrating the power and redemption in knowing oneself and being known. Kelly Flanagan weaves together wisdom, humor, faith, and relationship to beautifully portray a path for Eli to wholeness and healing, and a path all of us need to take. Numerous times while reading this novel I was convicted regarding my own areas of hiding and the need to take additional steps into the light." -- Michael MacKenzie, executive director of Marble Retreat and author of Don't Blow Up Your Ministry: Defuse the Underlying Issues That Take Pastors Down
"Through the captivating and poignant voice of Elijah Campbell, Flanagan takes us to the depths of brokenness and on the slow climb toward healing. This story invites us not only to unhide from one another but also to see in every glory and specter of our past the grace-filled presence of the One who keeps company with us through it all." -- Diana Gruver, author of Companions in the Darkness: Seven Saints Who Struggled with Depression and Doubt
"I knew from the first page that Elijah Campbell was a special character. Every chapter, paragraph, and sentence that I read proved me right. This novel is infused with gentle storytelling that reminded me of Wendell Berry, elegant prose that brought to mind Marilynne Robinson, and salt of the earth characters reminiscent of Leif Enger. The great delight that I found while reading, however, was what Kelly Flanagan brought to this story that only he could―a deep insight into what makes us human and how that makes us worthy of being seen and known." -- Susie Finkbeiner, author of The Nature of Small Birds and All Manner of Things

About the author
Dr. Kelly Flanagan is a psychologist turned novelist and a few things in between, including a husband of twenty-two years, a dad to three amazing human beings between the ages of fourteen and twenty, a keynote speaker, and a coach to a handful of successful entrepreneurs who want more than mere success. His writing went viral a bunch of times in the blogging days, resulting in an appearance on the TODAY Show and a feature in Reader’s Digest. Fun fact: other than the Bible, his writing is the only cited reference in The 5 Love Languages! His two non-fiction books—LOVEABLE and TRUE COMPANIONS—debuted as #1 New Releases in Interpersonal Relations on Amazon, and his first novel, THE UNHIDING OF ELIJAH CAMPBELL, has won multiple literary awards. He is married to another clinical psychologist named Kelly. Dr. Kelly and Dr. Kelly wreak havoc at airport security. They live in a little town in rural Illinois where, on any snowy morning before dawn, the streetlight outside their house is reminiscent of the lamp post in Narnia where Lucy met Tumnus.

I read and loved all the non-fiction books that Kelly Flanagan wrote, and learned a lot from each and every one of them. I am also a fan of his blog. So finding "The Unhiding of Elijah Campbell" an amazing read - educating and enjoyable at the same time - came as no surprise to me. I couldn't wait for Dr. Kelly's first fiction book and as soon as I had it in my hands, I was not able to put it down.
Many scenes of the book make me think of my own experiences and I find myself analyzing and comparing, but mostly learning how to deal with my past that "will stay, always, within us."
Opening the book randomly, I can easily find a quote worth remembering. This is one of my favorites: "a way of pretending we aren't, all of us, always growing and evolving and learning. It's a way of insisting we should be finished when, in reality, all of us are always in process."
Flanagan conveys deep truths in this book in a beautiful way. Elijah's character and his struggles are very relatable. As soon as I finished reading the book, I wanted to go back and read it again with a highlighter at the ready. It is a book I will recommend to many!
This story reveals the realities of our complicated human lives, relationships and the way we show up in the world. I recognized myself so many times in the characters struggles and in their very human responses. Just like Elijah, my own journey of growth and change caused me to come face to face with perspectives that had previously been hidden from me. Some of these unhiding's are both confronting and challenging. I couldn't wait to get to the next page to see what he would do as I found myself becoming Elijah's greatest advocate.
This book will help you to see yourself and others with more compassion and may even encourage you down a new path, that leads to a more authentic way of showing up in the world, just like Elijah.
