- Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2013I've always loved hummingbirds. My mother-in-law has been feeding them for years and she's the one who got me interested with my bird watching hobby. When my wife bought me my very first hummingbird feeder 2 years ago, I was amazed at how many hummingbirds came to that feeder. But alas... I lost that feeder about 6 months ago due to squirrels raiding my patio's bird feeders. They caused the hummingbird feeder to slide off the hook as they were using it to "bounce" from it to the barn feeder I have set up on a long pole.
I wanted to replace that feeder immediately to get my hummingbirds back. My mother-in-law ended up buying me a cheap plastic bottle feeder, but after setting that out for a few weeks, they never returned. I assumed that maybe it was the plastic "tainting" the nectar solution because I noticed the feeder always smelled funny (like chemicals). So I went out to Lowe's and bought a replacement glass feeder. I used that for a few months and again, the hummingbirds never came to that one either. For that one, I think it's due to the fact that there is no "perch". While hummingbirds don't really need a perch to drink nectar (especially in the wild), I think the reason for failure is because all the other birds flying around my patio maybe scared them and prevented them from feeding.
So here I was with 2 failed hummingbird feeders. I again asked my wife if there was any way she remembered, but she said no. So that's when I resorted to Googling what I remembered about the feeder. "Glass bottle hummingbird feeder with perch" is what I searched for and lo and behold, the majority of the images that popped up were that of a hummingbird feeder very similar to the one that I lost months ago. Of course there are subtle differences, but the overall design is exactly that of my previous feeder. Based on those pictures, I found the brand and then I searched Amazon.
Amazon actually sells 3 of these feeders.
The Smaller One: Best-1 8oz Hummingbird Feeder
The One I'm Reviewing: Best-1 32 Ounce Hummingbird Feeder
The One Identical To The One I'm Reviewing, But from a Different Seller: Best-1 32 Ounce Hummingbird Feeder
***The one by a different seller is actually a little bit more expensive by a little over $1 at the time of this review.
Here are reasons why this hummmingbird feeder, in my opinion, is the best.
1. The bottle is all glass, which is unlikely to taint the nectar like that of a plastic bottle.
2. The mouth on the glass bottle is exactly the size of that of 2 liter sodas. While this doesn't matter when you're feeding hummingbirds, it does matter when I store it away for the winter months. After washing it, I let the bottle dry and then I cap it with a 2 liter's cap.
3. The metal clamp/loop is very strong and allows you to hang the bottle from a hook/branch with confidence, no matter the amount of nectar you put into the bottle. Although other reviewers have had issues with the clamp slipping, I've not had this experience with this feeder or my previous one.
4. The base design is a little different than my previous one, but I like this one better. The material of the plastic is MUCH heavier duty and is rigid. My previous feeder's base was somewhat weaker and flexible. When you tightened the bottle to the base, it actually popped out on my old feeder because the plastic flexed.
5. The number of ports (8) allows for maximum hummingbird potential. Many other competitor feeders use those fake plastic "flowers", which takes up design real estate and doesn't allow as many hummingbirds to feed at the same time.
6. The perch is, I think, one of the main reasons why I had so many hummingbirds in the past and the reason for their return. Again, in nature, many hummingbirds don't get to perch & feed at the same time. Maybe they actually like not having to waste energy when feeding. Who knows, I'm just glad my hummingbirds are BACK!
Regardless, I can gladly say that Best-1 makes the best hummingbird feeders from my experiences.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2020I have been feeding hummers for more than 50 years and have tried lots of feeders. This is the best one so far. Let me count the ways. It is super easy to take apart and clean, which is so important since it should be done at least twice a week during mid-summer heat. It is sturdy: some feeders use plastic that snaps or cracks too easily. I love the simple way that a foot rest is provided, so that the hummers don't have to use vital energy while feeding. I like that there is a grove you can fill with water that acts as an ant trap, although I wish that was a little deeper and a little wider. As other reviews have mentioned, it is essential that you check the feeder once a day to make sure that there is no internal vapor lock preventing the sugar water from flowing to the feeder ports. Something about the internal design causes that to happen more often than with other feeders I have used: but they all have this problem to some extent, and just tip the feeder base slightly in each direction and you will see bubbles in the nectar as flow is restored. I also do this after each heavy rain to flush out the feeding ports.
Wish list: include a cleaning brush. Highly recommend Railhookz 30 Inch Clamp on Deck Rail or Fence Hanger
by Railhookz as a linked product. Thanks for a great great product. Could not be happier.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2015I have had hummingbird habitats for over twenty years and tried various feeders for my faithful friends. The Best-1 32oz Hummingbird Feeder is the easiest feeder for refilling, quick dismantling and washing. The feeder consists of four parts: the 32oz glass bottle, the round metal holding the glass bottle with another metal piece for hanging the feeder and the red plastic base with a lid with eight tiny holes and plenty of room for the hummers to perch on. The feeder is easy to scrub and clean. It does not have any hard to reach areas where bacteria or mold could grow. It is made to last for a long time. Occasionally, I have seen one or two bees feeding on the sugar water through the holes. It is fun to watch the bees literally bending vertically and trying to push their head into the holes to drink the nectar! I have set up equal opportunity feeders in my backyard and would love to help with the diminishing bee population anyway I can! During winter time, I fill half of the bottle with sugar water but in spring and summer I fill it to the rim to accommodate larger population of hummers. The hummers love this feeder due to easy access to the nectar and the round perching area. Following are some tips for using this feeder:
1. Hang this feeder with an Ant Trap (see my review) filled with water. You will not have any ant problems. If hung in a shady area or under a tree, the water in the Ant Trap will not evaporate quickly.
2. Hang your feeder in a shady area next to grass. During severe wind storms, your feeder will land on the grass and the glass bottle will not break.
You can always purchase replacement parts from the manufacturer as opposed to the whole unit. I would highly recommend this feeder.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2024A simple feeder. Easy to clean. as well to fill. The birds love it too. The bottom ring for the birds to perch really helps them when feeding, they are able to burn less energy. I have 3 of these feeders and I've been using this design for the last 20 years.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2024used these for years., easy to clean.. work great. do not need to color water.. and can drill slightly larger hole to accommodate orioles..

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Hummingbird feeder ever!!
This is the best feeder we have ever owned. It is easily cleaned, has no flowery parts to clean. The birds have a great place to perch. I have two different bottle sizes. One for early in the year, and the larger one for breeding time. I have recently bought two more for gifts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does not tip easily when larger birds sit on it.
If you have lots of hummingbirds this is the only feeder to buy. The indicator on the side helps to identify how many birds you are feeding in a day. Larger birds (woodpeckers, Orioles) don’t tip the feeder when they sit on it so your fluid does Not run out all over the ground (or your deck). The rings allow for a number of hummers’ to sit side by side and feed. We have had mothers feed I g their babies at the feeder and teaching their babies how to eat from the feeder - very cute.
