Review

While most current guides focus on yoga's asana (physical practice), this concise book emphasizes its spiritual aspects. Chopra (Ageless Body, Timeless Mind) and Simon (medical director, Chopra Ctr.) are both pioneers in the field of holistic health, having mixed Western medicine with natural Eastern hearing traditions. They lucidly explain the complexities of Vedic science and discuss how to apply its spiritual aspects to a yoga routine. Their overriding message is that if practitioners combine the components of a good yoga practice - breathing, meditation, postures (illustrated with photographs), bandhas (means of breath control), and Chopra's seven spiritual laws, they are promised physical, emotional, and spiritual rewards. Good for both beginners and advances students, this is an excellent choice for most yoga collections. ("Library Journal, July 2004)

"Just as no one would argue that gravity applies only to England because Sir Isaac Newton was British or that Einstein's theory of relativity was relevant only in Germany...the principles of yoga are not limited by time or space," say Chopra, author of "The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, and Simon, medical director for the Chopra Center. Their guide is written in such a clear, sensible way that those new to yoga will wonder why they've not tried it before. Seasoned practitioners will find themselves reinvigorated and may learn a new breathing technique or meditation. Starting with descriptions of the two most popular frameworks, Shankara and Patanjali, the authors then list the seven laws of spirituality that neatly correspond to the seven days of the week. Extensive explanations of several types ofmeditation-- chakra, so hum breath technique, awareness, attention/intention-- are followed by the most common breathing exercises and thorough instructions for a variety of asanas (poses). Photographs complete the instructional portion of the book, making it especially useful for beginners. The final pages bring the program together with a suggested routine that combines all of the above into a perfect blend of theory and practice. ("Publishers Weekly, June 28, 2004)

From the Inside Flap

If you' re like millions of other people, you' ve found that yoga is a wonderful way to improve your flexibility, balance, muscle tone, and endurance.Hopefully you have experienced the feelings of tranquility and vitality that flow during a good yoga session and that stay with you throughout the day. These benefits are excellent reasons to practice yoga, yet they only hint at the extraordinary and transformative power of this deeply spiritual practice. At last, The Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga brings spirituality back to the practice of yoga today.

The word " yoga" comes from the Sanskrit word yuj, meaning union, and as Deepak Chopra and David Simon explain in this inspiring guide, yoga has the power to unite body, mind, and spirit, bringing us into alignment with the magnificent rhythms of the cosmos.Born in India and a central element of Ayurveda, our most ancient healing wisdom tradition, yoga is ever so much more than an exercise routine- it is a complete science of balanced living and a path to higher knowledge and joyful abundance. When adhered to and practiced mindfully, the yoga principles and techniques described in The Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga can be the keys to unlocking your full creative potential, your capacity for love and compassion, and your ability to find success in all areas of life.

Chopra and Simon begin by exploring the eight traditional yoga branches. Only one of these branches, Asana, corresponds to the physical poses that people ordinarily associate with yoga.Drs. Chopra and Simon show how the Seven Spiritual Laws, familiar to millions of readers of the bestselling The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success- Pure Potentiality, Giving, Karma, Least Effort, Intention and Desire, Detachment, and Dharma- play a crucial role in yoga' s path to enlightenment. The authors then provide you with the tools for integrating the Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga into your daily life, including meditation techniques, mantras, breathing exercises, and carefully chosen, delightfully illustrated yoga poses.

Whether you are a newcomer to yoga or an experienced practitioner, The Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga is your portal to yoga' s deeper spiritual dimension and a beautiful step to a happier, more harmonious, and more abundant life.

Read this while studying and practicing yoga for the first time. Love it so much and still read this to this day when not practicing because the rules listed are basic rules of life written so beautifully that I believe anyone who is keen to connecting to others on a basic human level, can appreciate. Whether you are religious or spiritual or have no beliefs you can connect to the realness of what the author presents to you about what yoga is and how it is best practiced, and overall, the ways in which life can be best lived. It put me at peace in some of my most chaotic times and like books like the four agreements, allowed me to take a step back from the chaos, breathe, and ground myself into reality and the beauties of life. Found when I was googling "best books for practicing yoga" and found that it is so much more than that.

I chose this book because I was looking for help in returning to my practice of yoga. Deepak Chopra books always provided words of guidance. He did not fail in this attempt. He begins the book with insightful questions to help you find the real "you" and then progresses to explain the different types of yoga practices. But the real value in the book is the section discussing the Seven Spirtual Laws. For me, that alone was worth buying the book.

After many years of practicing yoga I now understand the importance of not forcing the body to obey moves but it is in allowing the inner Self to assist in all of the movements. There is a wonderful section on yoga positions with excellent photos and descriptions of how to attain the pose. Chopra also discusses meditation, how to practice it and methods for success.

This is a book I keep in my workout area and read each day before I begin my sessions. It is not only physically helpful, it is a spiritual inspiration.

I recently started to increase my awareness of health. I had a lot of overweight and knew the yoyo-effect all to well. Then I stumbled upon a website and a book of Jon Gabriel (The Gabriel Method). I will spare you off the food side of this story but this method makes you also familiar with visualisations and meditating. After a while, I wanted to get some exercise and in the method I heard about yoga.

I knew yoga but never practised it. Thought it was for the alternative and the softies. Not that I'm such a macho, but yoga... I didn't think it was something for me!

Through the method I became interested in yoga and bought a book... this one.

A whole new world came into view. Peace of mind, looking for the truth within, awareness, mindfulness...

The book is nice for as well beginners as experienced yogi's. It's good it highlights the meditating part also, not only the physical side.

This book is my all time favorite book on yoga, and one of Deepak's best. I had to order another one because when I loaned this book out last time, I never received it back. Guess it turned out to be one of their favorites too. I had to order another one because I couldn't be without it. This is a great "go to" book. Deepak Chopra explains in simple words the true meaning of yoga. So many of the books I have bought in the past about yoga do not resonate with me at all. Deepak's books, especially this one, resonates to your soul. It touches you. It is easy reading. You can pick it up and almost finish it in one sitting. You won't want to put it down.

Excellent Book !!! Ordered 1 for myself & 1 for my brother, from 2 Different Sellers, per availability. Bookmarked a page to "pique" his interest to read more, so as to reaffirm his confidence while Navigating Negative People & Their Actions. As I anticipated, he responded w/Renewed Confidence, saying it Confirmed what I've shared w/him through the years, but more like a " Condensed Handbook"! Although I had NEVER Read the Book Before, I was Inspired & Hopeful, after watching Chopra on PBS, because it was like he described my Very "Core" & Culmination of Some of the "Self- Codes" by which I've been guided, most of my life. Happy Beyond Words for such "Affirmation" for both my brother & myself.
RECOMMEND BOOK & SELLER, As Book was Excellent Condition @ Good Price & Prompt Delivery!
    A Very Satisfied Customer :)

This is one of the best books on basic teachings of Yoga and how the Yoga tradition works. Deepak Chopra as always has done an excellent job at his passing on of knowledge of all things Vedanta. The poses contained within are also very beginner friendly and helpful if you're looking to improve your over-all fitness, flexibility and general sense of well being.

Deepak offers a well balanced approach to Yoga in this book.

I would buy this again for someone I know.

One of my go to books ... great for someone getting into yoga and mediation. This was the 5th or 6th time I have given this book as a gift. The receiver was over-the-top and said it has been a huge asset in the mediation process especially to read the daily spiritual laws in combination with the seven chakras.
    A must have book.
