4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 11,735 ratings

A sudden family death and an old nemesis bring retired agent Mac Dekker in from the cold in this alpine thriller from New York Times bestselling author Christopher Reich.

Robbie Steinhardt lives a peaceful life. A fixture of his small alpine village, he tends cattle, minds his own business, and doesn’t dwell on his former life and the family and lover he left behind—back when he was Mac Dekker, CIA.

But when he learns his son Will died following in his footsteps, he needs answers. What mission took Will up into the alpine heights, and why is Ilya Ivashka on the same trail? Ilya—his close friend, his rival in love. Ilya, who framed Mac for treason and sent him into hiding.

Wiping away the years, Mac returns to the field to find the secrets Will hid and finds himself facing the Herculean task of stopping a terrorist plot that threatens thousands. But in a field of double agents, who can he trust?

From the Publisher

Have you ever wanted to disappear? Hide away in a Swiss village to live a life of solitude? Sign me up. But what if the disappearance—a faked death and a new identity—was the only way you could keep your family safe? Less appealing. That is where we find Robbie Steinhardt, née Mac Dekker, the hero in this exciting new series by New York Times bestselling author Christopher Reich.

Mac has been hiding away for years, but when he learns his son has been murdered, he is hell-bent on exacting revenge. As he searches for answers, he realizes his son was working as a spy and his last mission was to stop a broad terrorist attack on a major European city’s water supply that could kill tens of thousands of innocent people.

Retirement is over for Mac Dekker. This is great news for readers, as his mission takes him to the heights of the Matterhorn and the streets of Moscow—bringing him face-to-face with his old friend turned nemesis and offering him a chance to save the world from devastation.

Hi Everyone,

It's great to be part of Amazon's new Author Page. Here's a short bio.

I was born November 12, 1961 in Tokyo, Japan and moved to Los Angeles four years later, in late 1965. I graduated from Harvard School (now Harvard-Westlake) in 1979, then made the move to Washington DC where I attended the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. Upon graduating with a degree in international economics (a field in which I was neither particularly gifted nor interested), I worked as a stock broker for two years. One day my best client said, "Chris, you're a nice guy, but you have no idea what you're doing in this business. You might get into trouble one day. You gotta get your butt to business school." I followed his advice and headed down to Austin, Tx, to earn an MBA at UT.

After graduating from UT, I moved even farther east....all the way to Switzerland, where I joined the Union Bank of Switzerland, first in Geneva and then in Zurich. I left banking and worked first as a consultant, and then as the CEO of a small watch company in Neuchatel. The only thing I missed out on was the chocolate business! Anyway, after 7 years in Switzerland, I decided that it was high time to become an author. I'd never written a short story and I hadn't taken a single English class in college. So what? I was a demon reader and I thought for sure I could do. My wonderful wife supported the decision wholeheartedly and we moved back to Austin, where I would write my first novel, Numbered Account.

The rest, as they say, is history....Or, as I say, "history in the making!!"

I downloaded this book as my monthly free choice. I’m so glad that I did. I enjoyed the story and characters. It was fast-paced and kept my attention. I’m glad that it can be read as a stand alone. I hate having to download the next book to get a resolution. That being said, I WANT to read the rest of the series and find out what’s in store for Mac!

Great story line with excellent character development. Lots of twists and turns but with no hanging questions at the end. I liked the mostly rapid fire chapters which tempted the reader to continue reading late into the night. A quite enjoyable spy novel. Put this one on your "to read" list.

Amazon First Readers hoping for an entertaining spy novel find themselves in reveling in good fortune. Christopher Reich’s “Matterhorn” sounded good, so I picked it for my month’s selection, and I devoured the book. It is spies at its best with a serious back story regarding Decker that is slowly revealed to us. Mac Dekker, the protagonist, is a man of quiet mystery, yet, he is very likeable. “Matterhorn” was the first book I have read of Christopher Reich, and I was pleasantly surprised with a well-crafted plot with interesting and nicely developed characters.

“Matterhorn” was exciting, action-packed secret agent thriller with a race to discover the plan that will result in the deaths of thousands of innocents if it cannot be discovered in time and stopped. The story is straight forward. The good guys are good and the bad guys are bad with really no shade of grey.

The author Christopher Reich is an excellent writer with good story development and characters. As some have mentioned in their reviews, one could complain about the plots being a bit far-fetched with some superhuman skills and unbelievable escapes; one accepts that for entertainment. The protagonist Mac Decker is characterized as a bit larger than life – certainly mysterious and almost superhuman at times. Think of Robert Ludlum, Lee child, or Tom Clancy whose characters are a bit larger than life ~ yes superhuman at times ~ and yet we cheer them on. If you wish to climb “Matterhorn,” prepare to be taken for an adventurous ride.

This is a gripping spy novel about American vs Russian spies and traitors, and a Russian plan to kill millions of Ukrainians using biological warfare. I would have given the book 5 stars but for the obviously stupid decisions made by the key players during the climactic violent face-offs near the end of the book. Example: Mac puts his gun down when Ilya threatens to shoot Mac's daughter Jane if he doesn't. There's no one else around to help, and Ilya needs to kill Mac too. Putting down his gun put both him and his daughter at the complete mercy of the enemy. In that situation, Mac should have taken the shot anyway, even if it might graze his daughter slightly. And then complete happenstance saves them. This kind of thing divides the good authors from the great ones, and this author has not reached greatness with this book.

I really liked this book. It was actually the first one I've read of Christopher Reich but I got very pleasantly surprised of a very well told plot, interesting characters, and a great story that definitely held up. I just wanted to get hold of the next book in the serie, but as it still is a while away I'll back track and dive into some other of the novels.

A somewhat “political themed” thriller…the usual countries (USA, Russia, Ukraine) and an assortment of trained killers (aka spies, 🕵️‍♀️, sppoks etc) make for a consistent thrill ride in the Swiss Alps. Well plotted, well timed, peopled with well drawn characters all make for very good read that you might want to read later into the night!

This Spy Novel is well written and holds your attention to the end. I loved the focus on the Alps, especially the beautiful mountain Matterhorn. It is a great story populated by interesting, characters given to high performance in professional and private life. It would however be wrong to think that the novel offers a fact based account of life as a secret agent, American, Russian or any other nationality. It would be a great script for yet another movie on the international operations of secret service agencies.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well-paced

A well-paced thriller, leading up to a literal cliff-hanger ending. Given the title, I’d expected a bit more of the narrative to include the mountain, but it remained interesting throughout. I’ll read the next book in the series as the lead character has developed into a more interesting man as this book progressed.

An excellent story of an ex-CIA Agent forced out of retirement/hiding. Story unfolds quickly with well developed characters. Some surprises along the way. Some anticipated twists to the plot. All in all a good page turner.
