The former SNL star recounts the adventures and unexpected joy of dating and becoming a mom when she least expected it—at the age of forty-four.

Anyone who saw an episode of Saturday Night Live between 1999 and 2006 knows Rachel Dratch. She was hilarious! So what happened to her? After a misbegotten part as Jenna on the pilot of
30 Rock, Dratch was only getting offered roles as “Lesbians. Secretaries. Sometimes secretaries who are lesbians.”

Her career as a female comedian at a low point, she suddenly had time for yoga, dog-sitting, learning Spanish—and dating. Dratch reveals the joys and terrors of putting herself out there in a quest to find love and then becoming a mother in an undreamed-of way. With riotous humor, she recounts breaking the news to her bewildered parents, the awe of her single friends, and romance and coparenting with her baby-daddy, John.

Filled with great behind-the-scenes anecdotes from Dratch’s time on
SNL, Girl Walks into a Bar . . . is a funny book with a refreshing version of the happily-ever-after story, full of sensitivity, candor, and plenty of comic relief, as only Rachel Dratch can tell it.

“Ms. Dratch maintains a blunt, irreverent and gently jaded posture, party because of experience . . . [she] turns her setbacks into irreverent vignettes . . . . her book, which moves from tales of Second City and “Saturday Night Live” to an exploration of motherhood, convinces you that she has seen enough to justify a show business memoir.” — Jason Zinoman, The New York Times

“Funny, honest, and optimistic. It’s like spending a delightful evening with Rachel, but in a format that allows you to put her in your purse and enjoy her on the bus.” —Tina Fey

“Dratch’s book is definitely funny, but it is her courage to speak openly about her struggle with dating, romance, and the Holy Grail of feminine culture—motherhood—that makes this work as unconventional as her path to both television stardom and maternity.” —
The Huffington Post

“A hilarious and incisive view of her unexpected life trajectory.” —

"It's rare that you find a book so sharply funny yet deeply optimistic. I LOVED this book from start to finish. Rachel's stories are just so candid and honest- It was hard not laugh out loud- so I often did." —Mike Birbiglia,

I bought this because I had seen Rachel promoting it on Leno or Fallon, it sounded funny and I wanted to hear more about her dating disasters and what the "surprise twist" was. I knew Rachel from her work on SNL, but didn't realize times had gotten kind of tough for her career after her contract wasn't renewed. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, for a few reasons: I love her type of humor -- intelligent, low-key, sarcastic but not mean, self-deprecating but not making a fool of herself -- just totally hilarious to me. I also felt like I could identify with her on so many levels -- not fitting in at school, going for the bad boys, "not reading", watching Real Housewives, not being "kid-enamored" but ending up as a single parent of a baby boy in a very similar scenario. She also keeps it classy, never resorting to gutter humor or TMI about her personal relationships. I'd highly recommend this, not only for a fun read but to get to know a very talented comedian. I am now a huge fan of Rachel's, and I hope we'll continue to see a lot of her work in the future.

I pretty much stopped watching SNL after the original cast, plus Bill Murray left, but I was vaguely aware of the performers that were on for years -- especially the women. Women used to have a hard time making it in comedy and no doubt still do. (In Chicago in the early 80's, I was told by some male improvisers that as a woman, I was basically a...insert crude name for prostitute... on stage because women weren't funny, but just a necessary evil. They said we were needed for scenes every once in a while. Never did see those particular guys make it in the business, unlike the talented male improvisers who were always supportive and complimentary. They did go on to see professional success.)

Anyway, I love it when funny, smart women make it at Second City and SNL and elsewhere. Rachel Dratch is, based on this book, very smart and very funny. I enjoyed reading her memoir so much. It was like being with an old friend who you have a great rapport with and is always a lot of fun. She is a very good writer and naturally funny. She is entertaining and I loved her honesty. Loved her openness and experiences with "New Age" stuff like The Secret. The only reason I'm giving this a 4 1/2 instead of 5 stars is life after the baby kind of lost me and I skimmed. But women who've had children might love it.

Highly recommended.

I saw Rachel Dratch on a panel with other female comedians at Tribeca Film Festival and she was by far the funniest person on the panel so it shouldn’t have surprised me that she’s a great writer.

She realizes what questions people want answered and she answers them. Straightforward. Honest. Funny without trying too hard (Sorry Bossypants - that’s where you lost me)
Highly recommend.

I'm a fan of Rachel Dratch and always thought she was one of SNL's most amazing talents. However, this book isn't that good. It's just okay. It wanders a bit (like the chapter on the dog and the one about Seder). There's also some basic editing that didn't happen here. Repeated information, a bit of rambling and what not. And just a bit TMI with how she got pregnant. One sentence would have done it on that front.

On the other hand, I could completely relate to Rachel having grown up in Mass and only being a year younger than her. I get her personal life story, connect with her metaphysical interests, and have been on the same (if not worse) dates.

There's a very strong and serious call throughout the book in search of her next gig. She says she's not a serious actor though I suspect if she trained for it, she'd be amazing at it. And she'd probably get more acting opportunities...tons of "not Hollywood knockouts" in her age range are very, very busy these days.

She is an attractive, bright woman and I hope she realizes that soon as it seems to be a sticking point with her given the types of offers she gets from the industry.

Overall, the book isn't bad and you'll whip through it pretty quickly. There are a half dozen or so LOL moments. Not sure I can justify the pricing on it. Put it this way -- if you're taking a plane ride, pick this up for the levity and it will make the time pass. Not a bad read but not a must read.

Loved Rachel on SNL, especially as Debbie Downer, and she certainly doesn't disappoint in this entertaining autobiography. Like so many other reviewers, I laughed out loud many, many times when I read this book. The chapter relating to the telltale dildo (a reference to Edgar Allan Poe's Tell-Tale Heart, for non-Poe readers) would make an amazingly funny skit on SNL. OMG! it caused me to laugh so hard that I had tears streaming down my face and I nearly peed in my pants! I have always liked Rachel Dratch on SNL, but this book shows that she still has a great gift for comedy. And I loved the funny bits about her parents becoming grandparents. I agree with one of the other reviewers that the reader is left with a warm and fuzzy feeling, because her writing style is so personable that by the end of the book, you feel as though you were talking on the phone with your very funny best friend. I would hope that her son Eli has been providing her with wonderful material for another book! Can't wait to see what this lady does next; she is so talented!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the funniest books you'll ever read!

I'll admit that when buying this book, I didn't really know who Rachel Dratch is - I only purchased this book as it was recommended when buying the memoirs of Amy Poehler and Mindy Kaling. I could not have been happier about this impulse buy - Second only to Tina Fey's 'Bossy Pants', this is the best memoir I have ever read. This is a book that is endearing and GENUINELY 'laugh-out-loud' funny as Dratch puts aside her embarrassments and social faux pas to tell the story of her life 'after success' - a change to the usual story of careers from other celebrities out there, and one that will leave you with a new sense of respect and adoration for the completely down-to-earth and hilarious ex-SNL star.

If you enjoy memoirs, or even just love a book that makes you cry with laughter, then this is the book for you.
