From the Author

I wrote the first half of the manuscript at a tennis tournament in Puerto Rico after watching Pit Bulls and Parolees on the back of a headrest on a plane from Fort Lauderdale to San Juan. The dog rescue show sparked an idea for a perfect young adult contemporary romance book setting. Pieces of that tournament, including a wolf at a sanctuary, sifted into what is now Dog Girl. If I had to sum up Dog Girl in two words, they'd be--second chances.

Gabi Justice is the author of Dog Girl, her teen and young adult contemporary romance.

She is the mom to three big dogs and one stray cat named Luna Buna. She lives in Florida with her husband and children. You’d be hard-pressed to find a tennis court in the state that she hasn’t visited, having three competitive junior players in the family. And she doesn't need a map to guide her around any of the Disney or Universal theme parks. Her favorite time to visit is at night during Halloween or Christmas.

She spent most of her adult life writing editorial copy for local magazines after graduating from the University of South Florida. Florida provides the settings for all her coming-of-age stories that highlight bullying, misjudgment, acceptance, and teen mental illness. Her main characters are goal-oriented teenagers with a drive that can be fierce and dangerous.

I knew I'd like this book because I love dogs and yes, the dogs will capture your heart, but it's Kendall's story that captivated my attention. She struggles with so much. She's strong. Her relationship with Ryan is one you will root for. It deals with teen anxiety, love, bullying in a very engaging way. Great read for teens and adults.

Kendall and her mom have an organization that is focused on rescuing dogs from some pretty bad situations. In fact, we begin our story with a very intense rescue that has you already begging for this story to make it to a screen.

Kendall has a lot of struggles in her life. Her father passed away and she [understandably] just cannot let him go. She still speaks to him pretty regularly and gets some counsel in return. She has mad anxiety and really relates to Peter Parker. Even having to wait more than a minute or two for her friends to arrive lunch can provoke a massive panic attack.

Someone is going around purposely hurting dogs. Kendall's dramatic pit bull rescue actually garners her family's rescue some national attention, but also puts them all in danger as they continue to try to discover who the jerk is who is harming these dogs. The story goes through a lot of page-turning twists as they try to sort it all out and Kendall has to come into her own and can find the good parts of being "Dog Girl." She also learns a lot about her own preconceived notions, such as those involving a super preppy boy named Ryan who ends up being so much more than she could ever imagine.

There are also some good lessons in this story about social media - the pros and cons, and a teacher named Mr. Young who is super annoying because of his lack of understanding of teens, particularly bullying. And of course, we have a smidge of romance. I admit I wasn't sure what to expect when I started this YA novel, but was pleasantly surprised by the story and how much I actually enjoyed it.

I received a requested review copy for this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This wonderful story starts off with a dog rescue and it just gets better from there.

Kendall is a teenage girl that we can all relate to in one way or another. Her family owns and operates a dog rescue and like so many of us, Kendall is better with animals that people. Dogs are not the only creatures being rescued though. Felons are also employed at the Delray Dog Rescue, giving them a second chance.

Kendall is plagued by anxiety and as a video of her daring rescue at the beginning of the book draws attention to the rescue, Kendall has to decide if she can push aside her anxiety and self-doubt for the chance to help save the rescue, in more ways than one.

Volunteering at the rescue is Ryan. Ryan becomes her boyfriend and the addition of him to her life is such a good storyline. He helps her build her confidence and do what needs to be done where the dog rescue is concerned.

I truly enjoyed this look at how a rescue works and how animals weren’t the only creatures being rescued in the book. The humans needed rescuing, too. I could relate to Kendall in so many ways and quickly grew to like her a lot. I don’t want to give too much away in reviewing the book, but I do believe it is a good read for any age.

I had the privilege of working with the author under her other pen name. She is a great story teller and one I look forward to reading more from. When she offered me an ARC of the book I was so excited to read it. All opinions expressed here are entirely my own.

I received an ARC of Dog Girl for an honest review. This book comes out in November and trust me you'll want to put it in your TBR if you like YA Contemporary + Romance.

Dog Girl is about a highschool girl named, Kendall, who helps her family at their dog rescue. A rescue that is not only for animals but for convicted criminals who need a second chance following their time served. This story starts off with a dog that has been shot and tied to railroad tracks. Kendall rescues this dog from a horrible fate. The media storm that follows is not something she is prepared for, but Ryan (an intern) leads this new-found fame to raise money for the rescue that will save it. With Kendall’s eyes set on rescuing a wolf named, Dragon, Ryan is providing a path she’ll have to follow.

What is unique about this story is the mirror of how you treat animals and humans alike, and the scars we bear both physically and emotionally. Set in a current day, with prejudices on bisexuality and bullies. This story is indicative of the saying, you never know someone until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes. It’s a heartwarming story for any dog lover and those who need second chances.

This book was such a joy to read. Kendall has a strong personality, and she does what she needs to, to get things done. She is my most favorite kind of main character. Even though Kendall suffered from anxiety, she had a good support team to help her cope. Justice portrayed her anxiety very well. Kendall is a fighter, and she’s resilient. I liked Ryan and how much of a calming presence he was for her. The storyline covers a lot of important, real-world issues. Overall, this was a cute and enjoyable YA read.
